I have been with E.ON for many years. I have tried researching alternative energy suppliers, but as I pay at the Post Office and changing suppliers seems so complicated; I've stuck with E.ON. Plus I don't pay for anything online, and of what I understand a lot of energy suppliers only operate that way.

My bills have been getting higher and higher, where I have now written to E.ON asking them to investigate how they have charged me; it's incredulous that on my bill it actually states that I am on the lowest tariff - last bill £444.44 doesn't say so. They have stopped sending someone round to read my meter for quite some time now, even before Lockdown - but they still send someone round to my Mum's house to read her meter. Plus I filled in a Warmfront form a long time ago for supposedly cheaper bills, as I am on ESA benefits for being on long-term sickness; hasn't made any difference.

welbeck no not a typo you made me doubt myself ?so I just just checked my bank account and it’s £17 a month DD to Eon
They ll probably ramp me up now I ve said that ?

Whatdayisit Thu 12-Aug-21 21:30:24

I moved to Octopus - as previously explained my gas meter does not exist on the National Grid but EON have charged me an extortionate amount for 5 years. I can't move because there is no trace of me having gas! Butni moved electric to Octopus pay £144 a month. Anyway i seemed to build up a lot of credit i asked for a payment hol due to self isolating a few months ago and again one for August because of self isolating again. They are also giving me a refund of £144 and i will still have a £200 buffer on my account.
Verdict EON are awful.
Octopus are ok but a bit of a fath with emails i did get £50 for moving to them.
Look on Martin Lewis and see who he recommends.
I really feel for you OP it can be hard and frustrating to navigate and sometimes you have had enough to face dealing with this stuff. But cost wise it will be worth doing.

welbeck Thu 12-Aug-21 17:35:30

OP, have you looked into Octopu, they get v good reviews, and you can pay by cash at PayPoint.
i prefer to ring up with my debit card, and they do that too.
i am going to look into them further.

Octopus 100%.
Dh and i have never been happier with this supplier, unlike Scottish Power, they were a bluddy nightmare, and that`s being polite.

I ve been with EON for years and have both gas and electricity I have a big old house but no central heating and pay just under £200 a year by DD

me too, with them for years, i think they took over eastern electricity. now have them for gas as well.
they have put me on e-on next flex.
my latest bill shews the standing charges alone are over £200.
so you are doing very well on that. is it a typo ?
i understand that you do not have central heating, mine is gas, but even if i used no gas at all, i'd have to pay £108 standing charge; and £99 standing charge for electricity.
i have been wondering about octopus. like the waving legs.

Jaxjacky if you just google the question the answer will come up.

Katie59 Thu 12-Aug-21 17:17:04

No point fighting smart meters we are all going to get them eventually, although they probably could switch off your supply, does any one have any actual evidence of them doing that?.

Customer service at many of the suppliers is appalling, muppets at the end of the phone or an automated email reply that does noting to solve an issue. I can commend Octopus, with a smart meter they give you masses of information and their help line is very responsive, compared with the other companies I’ve endured they are great.

MerylStreep Thu 12-Aug-21 16:43:28

You don’t need a meter to tell you that everything with a heating element is going to cost you. Plus old fridges and freezers.

I’m sorry that the OP took offence to my post.
Just trying to help reduce bills as I’ve done with 2 elderly neighbours who couldn’t/ wouldn’t do this.
They soon changed their minds when we compared bills.

Jaxjacky Thu 12-Aug-21 14:53:02

Smart meters are not
A) emitting microwaves
B) listening to our conversations
Or any other gobbledegook gook, midgey please state your source for this information?
We have one, switched off, in a drawer, the meter readings are sent from the meter, which is outside. My last monthly bill, for a 3 bed semi, with gas hob and CH was £38, winter is about £100pm.

To anyone who thinks a smart meter will help in anyway let me disabuse you! The real point of of the beastly thing is that at some point in the future ‘They’ will be able to turn us off?

Oh!

I did not know that.

Thank you for informing me.

I doubly didn't want one already, now I even more don't want one of them.

Georgesgran Thu 12-Aug-21 13:45:41

OP seems to have requested her post to be withdrawn. Perhaps she felt (wrongly) that GNs were being a little harsh. I think most are aware that personal action needs to be taken to reduce energy bills, but it’s ‘interesting’ to see which appliances send the smart meter into a frenzy though. Mine’s in the garage and installed during lockdown by a very careful Covid aware chap.

lemsip Thu 12-Aug-21 12:49:38

citizens advice will help with finding better deals for fuel.....you should contact the.

Warm Home Discount ...you have to apply for this yourself if on low income benefits. you apply in sept time and it goes to your fuel provider and The £140 is deducted from your end of year bill. any credit will be paid back to you.

Hi

The other day I started the following thread.

www.gransnet.com/forums/chat/1299657-Energy-price-cap-to-rise-on-1-October-2021

I was with n-power for many years, it was what came after the old original electricity boards finished.

About October 2020 they sold out or whatever to eon.next and it went from quarterly bills to monthly bills.

I have meticulously sent in by email my own readings each month.

With n-power I had had a 3 year fixed price tariff. eon.next honoured those rates until the 3 years was up, on 31st March 2021.

The new price rocketed by about 40%. This may have been partly due to the accumulation of price rises from which my 3 year plan had protected me.

The house has been all electric for many years.

So, just saying that I have done it all online, sent in readings etc, and the cost is enormous, £2400 per year used to cover it for many years, now it is predicted to be around £3500 for the year and the green light has been given by Ofgen to rise it even more from 1 October 2021.

So even with online and all done carefully, it is still very expensive.

I have not got a special tariff now as eon.next require agreeing to have a smart meter fitted as a condition of all of them, so its the default one for me as I do not want a smart meter anyway and certainly not fitted while the pandemic is on.

Georgesgran Thu 12-Aug-21 11:27:45

I’m with E-on and one of the conditions of signing up to their lowest tariff last year was to have a smart meter fitted and they were quite ‘vigorous’ in pursuing it. I wasn’t bothered, so it’s connected up in the garage, but at least it would indicate the actual cost of daily usage and E-on would be able to ‘read’ it without you having to phone your readings in,

Katie59 Thu 12-Aug-21 09:06:40

Butterfly Ive just renewed mine at just under 16p per KWh and 20p per day if yours is anywhere near that it’s low.

Has anyone else renewed recently for much less?.

Teacheranne Thu 12-Aug-21 00:57:44

Butterfly3, I’m sorry you are unwell, things can get too much for us when we have health problems or other stresses. I am comfortable doing most things online but I strongly think that we should have a choice, if you choose not to pay for things online, why should you be forced to?

I was wondering if you are able to take your own meter readings maybe monthly to try to get payments sorted out? I think you can phone EON with meter readings although doing it online if fairly easy once you register your account - no payments needed.

On my energy bills I always get information about how much energy I used in the same period a year ago which makes it possible to see if there have been unexpected increases in usage or costs. This is only helpful though if it is based on actual meter readings.

Do you have family who could help you look online or maybe a friendly neighbour who could read you meters if you are unable to? You cannot keep on paying unexpected high bills when on a budget.

I am finding I am waiting longer and longer to phone companies with queries, I had to phone my insurance company today as I am changing my new car and needed information that was not available on the website and I had to wait over twenty minutes to get through!

Elleee Wed 11-Aug-21 22:08:51

Sorry for your troubles Butterfly3,,
We sorted out a smart meter for my mother and EON seemed like the best deal, the direct debit was £77 a month
Last week, we had an e mail that this was to be increased to £345 per month!
Of course we rang them, which was wholly unsatisfactory. Eventually , after taking even MORE readings, it was established that she was £58 in credit
Please do persist
Needless to say, we are switching, honestly it's not so hard to do

Whatdayisit Wed 11-Aug-21 21:52:26

I was with EON for both and was getting massive bills i felt i changed to Octopus but could only change electric as apparently i don't have a gas meter!
Every time i have contacted EON to try and sort it out i have got nowhere. They are a bloody awful company to deal with.
But since my electric has gone elsewhere i get charged about £100 a quarter for gas which has gone down from aprox £600. So i don't know what the hell is going on. I have gone round in circles trying to sort it but no help any way i turn.

Your bills sound expensive. I don't know whether there would be any advice on Martin Lewis's MSE sight. Or citizens advice if you have time.

Sorry Butterfly most energy suppliers only work on line these days and if you have been with the same one for a long time you will be on their highest rate for sure.

Honestly, you need someone to help you with services and possibly order things too, do you have family or a friend to ask.

Highest rate? At the bottom of my latest bill, which are sent quarterly btw; it says I'm on their lowest tariff.

I don't order things online coz I don't. I prefer to have the option of buying in stores or I phone them....everyone has a right to preference. Ok I have a laptop, doesn't mean I have to conform to the norm.

You don’t say for how long the £444.44 was for.
Why didn’t you phone them instead of writing. They probably ignored that letter.
It’s not difficult to switch, I’ve been with most of the energy companies, the same with banks.
Your obviously online so can I ask why you don’t pay anything on line.
The system is set up for online payments. It’s not fair to some people but that’s the way it is.

Too ill for such unhelpful comments.

Shouldn't have bothered.

Only human.

Anyway have requested my post be deleted.

Butterfly32 Wed 11-Aug-21 21:09:19

Sorry didn't actually point out that I did try phoning them a couple of times, they weren't any help at all. That's why I resorted to writing to them. Then when they phoned me which was in the midst of me giving my Mum her lunch as I'm her carer; the person who phoned me back was impossible to deal with.
