Getting a certified copy of Power of Attorney

Some solicitors used to offer a sort of certification surgery when they were open to do just that - covid might have stopped that. It is worth getting few done to send out to people.

OH got half a dozen done on the advice of a friend. Most organisations want an original and don’t always return them very quickly once they are needed.

The new version of LPAs can be self certified. They carry an unique code on the bottom of each page. A photocopy of the entire LPA can then be signed by you and certified by you as a true copy. You can also register them online at The Court of Protection where electronic access can be granted to organisations that require to see them after your death.

Funnily enough we’re just doing our health LPA-the one we have only covers finances-so Will make sure we get some copies certified at the same time. Thanks for the heads up!

I have asked for the certified copy to be returned after the bank scanned it in and that was not a problem.

Banks often want to keep a copy for their records.

I thought I’d update you in case anyone else is interested for the future. One solicitors refused as I haven’t been to them before, and another one will do it for me for £10. So I’ve booked an appointment.

And, of course, make a copy of the original for yourself. I’ve just done my power of attorney stuff. It’s taken ages.

The easiest thing would be to email your Solicitor and ask the cost, but first check that a certified copy will be accepted.
You might need to send the original, you can send it and track it’s journey to Ireland and get a Signature when it’s delivered.
