Sorry Gill, I missed that.

I tried to warn everyone about this a few months back and was dismissed as scare mongering by Brexit supporters. It would seem I am right. Apologies accepted

At the risk of telling everyone what they already know but I had no idea about -

A lady had a passport issued in Jan 2012 but as she had applied for it 8 months before the old one expired these extra 8 months were added to the new one which therefore was due to expire in Sept 2022 rather than Jan 2022.

If you travel to a Schengen country any such ‘extra months’ on your passport are ignored and therefore in this case they would consider the passport to expire in Jan 2022. And to add insult to injury if you travel to a Schengen country there must be at least three months unexpired on your passport on the date you intend to leave that country (the Foreign Office recommend six).

Poor woman was turned back at checkin and as Ryanair say it’s the passenger’s responsibility to check that their passport is in order she was left considerably out of pocket despite Ryanair having accepted her passport details when the booking was made.

Apologies to all who knew all this already.

Good post. Rip Off Britain Holiday special programme on last week highlighted this where people had been turned away from checking in as their passports had expired. Always to good to let others know as the travellers on the programme had no idea of the changes.

I read in the Sunday Times this week about passports expiring earlier than expected due to Brexit. I wasn't aware of this potential problem, which a couple only discovered when Ryanair refused to allow them through checkin because although their passports both appeared to be still in date, one wasn't due to Brexit regs. You probably know about this, I didn't as because I have rescue dogs I don't take holidays. If you want me to explain please say, otherwise I won't bore you with coals to Newcastle.
