Bank and secure key pad

I need to pay some bills but the secure key pad is not working. To be honest I haven’t been online banking for months. The computer is telling me to down load either by App Store or google play, neither of which I have much confidence in. Which have GNs used, is there a preference? Thank you

If you are HSBC, you can get a new secure key by ringing them up, if you can wait a few days before paying your bills.

It may need a new battery. I use the App Store on my iPad.

Apple Store is very safe. Apple are very protective of their security.

Thank you. Their phone lines are hopeless, tried both my land and portable but each of the eight calls broke up. Talk about long distance, reception was as if the person was answering from the moon.

I use telephone banking and find it extremely satisfactory. Because of my age(!!) I'm eligible for their helpline which seems to have some priority. I'm always answered pretty much immediately and dealt with accurately.

Are you with HSBC Kim?

Kim19 Sun 06-Feb-22 03:26:55

No, sorry, RBS.

I am back to tell you I had a call from HSBC regarding a letter I wrote listing all my complaints. They were very nice and sorted all the problems and finally I was told that they would put £75 on my account. Thank you HSBC.

Goods news mokryna, thanks for the update.

Great, thanks for letting us know, mokryna.

My credit card stopped working. I phoned HSBC and was told I’d have to go to my nearest bank which was actually 50 miles away. After going quite hysterical I was transferred to someone in the U.K. and they sorted it out over the phone. I feel awful getting angry with people from call centres in other countries but quite often I struggle to communicate properly with them. I hate saying this by the way. We’d been so careful during the pandemic and my credit card was my lifeline.

New update the keypad still hasn’t arrived. Latest they are saying in so many words that the case is closed because they cannot send it to me because it’s in the EU postal area!!!

We are thinking of moving from HSBC due to appalling service. In the last month my OH received a case of wine and just shy of £500 because of two different issues. We would rather have had good service.

I had the same failing keypad issue with my First Direct current account. I called them and got a very helpful staff member who helped me, very patiently, to download the banking app on my phone and I now use this yo generate the security code to access my account. It wasn't as tricky a procedure as I dreaded and I was able to instantly access my online accounts and pay some bills.

someone whom i know does telephone banking with HSBC.
she does, my voice is my password. it is very secure, and she pays bills, transfers money, checks transactions etc.
she has health problems and been in and out of hospital and could not remember passwords/numbers for various accounts.
this voice password system works well for her.
i pay bills mostly by ringing automated payment lines, or for eon, who stopped having automated system, at the post office.

Do you mean a card reader Mokryna? That's what I use for Nationwide and RBS though I mainly use the apps. Banks are stepping up security just now and I have had to confirm it is me with my Nationwide card reader to pay Next which is on my list of payees.
Also recently I have had the 2 number authentication - either a code is sent to my phone to enter on the website or app or I have to confirm the purchase on my banking app.
It's a nuisance but better than fraudsters getting your money.
If you’ve lost your Secure Key, call 03456 002 290 so we can deactivate it. You can then either upgrade to a Digital Secure Key or order a replacement.

'If you can still use it, you can order a new physical Secure Key using Chat. Just log on to online banking and select the Chat tab. If not, call 03456 002 290 to order a replacement or get help upgrading to a Digital Secure Key.' This is what it says on the website - have you tried the chat option? I'm not with HSBC but the chat option came up automatically.

Do you happen to have a keypad from another bank? They often work identically, I've done this many times.

Petera. No I don’t, interesting though. Do you think I could use a friend’s without messing hers up?

ElaineI I thought the pad wasn’t working because of the battery had run out, is that wrong?

welbeck The voice password doesn’t recognize my voice I must have used some sort of telephone voice which I can’t remember or maybe on a different phone.

They say they have sent at least 3, can I believe them? They seem to have washed their hands of the problem.

It’s just that I am used to the old method, I suppose I must if nothing happens will have to have use this new app but when I tried I have to choose between apple and google, more hoops to jump through as it is not direct with the bank.

Yes it won't mess anything up, they're not linked to your account. I frequently use my daughter's who has an account at the same bank, and I also use those from other banks when I can't find the correct one.

You might have to be a bit inventive as the keys may be labelled differently, but it won't block your card if you get it wrong. Mostly it works, but sometimes it doesn't.

ElaineI Thu 24-Mar-22 12:46:49

Just examined mine. They probably do have a battery that could run out. There are tiny screws on the back but no indication what battery and if it is changeable. I have 2, RBS and Nationwide and one I don't recognise ? which says on the back "Made from recycled coffee pods". It might be possible to use a friend's as it is the card that is important I think not the machine.

My daughter has this problem today and had to drive 20 miles to her bank to get it sorted , they gave her petrol money and £25 for the inconvenience ! The world has gone crazy ,please bring back real 'elbows on the counter ' banks ......

Cabbie21 Thu 24-Mar-22 18:31:28

Banks are increasing security, which is a good thing, but there are so many different methods. My bank used two stage authentication for the first time today, but via text so that was easy. Personally I don't want any more apps! They fill up storage on my ipad.

You made me smile as I don’t think they would pay my airfare. Thank you.

I did suggest that they sent it to a friend who will be traveling to Europe soon but there was a lot of security steps for them to take, which I fully understand, but I couldn’t ask her to do.

What I don’t understand is the bank say they have sent three devices since the beginning of February, are they lying?

My English friend here has said she has manage to set up a visual security thing, so I will try with her help next time I see her.

Today, 26 March I have received a letter dated 9 March telling me that I must use the secure code to active the secure key pad, by the 22 March 2022 11:6.
The envelope was sent prioritaire air mail Allemagne.
