September 2023 ..Premium Bond Winners

Well after a dry period, I won 1 x £100 and Hubby won 4 x £100 prizes..
I like Premium Bonds, but I just dont get it really. My win was from a purchase that went into the draw on the 1st September and Hubbys of the 4 x £100 wins 3 of them are all very similar numbers that have won.
I once queried the whole set up and was assured they are audited monthly, but your bond number has numbers and letters and is drawn randomly by some sort of sound wave thingy, if its so random, how can 3 similar numbers win!
I also realised (I am not obsessed lol) that a winner can win with a bond that hasnt stood for the preceeding month, any directly reinvested wins dont have to stand and go straight into the draw.
Anyway, hope some of you have had a nice win this month.
Phew!

Surely the fact that it is random means that the winners will not be spaced out either in location or bond number, and the same numbers may appear often. A number of people on here seem to be selected often, whereas we've only had one win ever - £25 - despite having as many as we are allowed. I once kept track of the lottery numbers that were drawn over a year and there were three of four numbers that were drawn frequently, but not together and the other two were always different. The same thing probably happens with the postcode lottery.

I would also expect more wins in counties where lots of people live who have more spare cash to invest, but I doubt the richest amongst us bother with Premium Bonds, they have other ways to invest with probably guaranteed returns.

My old adage of ‘shake em up’ applies here. Withdraw some and reinvest them. Thank me later for your winnings.

Arewethereyet That’s a very poor return for you, have you had them long ? Everyone I know wins something most months if they have full holdings. I think I’d look to reinvest them somewhere else sooner rather than later.

Sorry. I meant December 1960 not 1969.

JayDee60 Mon 25-Sept-23 12:41:28

Both myself and my husband get regular monthly wins. Even £25 makes us happy after all a wins a win.
I have premium bonds bought for me when I was born in December 1969 but none have ever paid out. I’ll be so happy when one day they do 🤞

Good to hear! I have a few gifted to me back in the 1960s. I live in Canada and keep checking the Bonds website - No luck so far.

Callistemon21 Sun 10-Sept-23 22:40:01

Yes, it could be a rumour but I'm sure the newer bonds have more chance of winning.

You arent on your own querying the random draw process with NSI. I regularly download all the numbers from their website and I picked up by chance a while ago that some bonds (same prefix letters and numbers) were being drawn numerous times each month and again in the following months. One month the same person won 10k, 5k plus smaller amounts on the same bond. Another won 25k and 5k the following month, another 10k then 5k the month after.. I could go on but it happens all the time that the same bonds come out for the same person you only need to search by bond number or area to identify multiple wins on the same bond. I wrote to NSI and asked them if it is so random why do the same numbers win regularly (flagging bonds that were winning large prizes multiple times). They referred me to the Audit office and told me to take it up with them as they verify the draw. Didnt get a response and just couldnt be bothered following it up. IMO Ernie isnt truly random and definitely has favourites. I have been withdrawing mine and reinvesting in fixed interest bond which are guaranteed to pay out.

Well you are just like me in wondering how this randomness works, It just makes no sense to me. I once asked Paul Lewis (Money Box) and he queried it with ERNIE on my behalf, the outcome being similar to yours in as much as well “the draw is independently audited”. I think in years to come, there will be a headline stating how incorrectly it has all been carried out. I have started trying to fox ERNIE by investing random amounts like £337 (rather than a round number) and withdrawing then reinvesting. I also reinvest my winnings as they go into the next draw without having to stand the month, AND, I have won a few times with these new bonds, and this tactic, its bonkers. Obsessed? No, Bewildered? Yes.

£150 this month and £100 last month. What do people do with their winnings? My daughter who wins £100 or so every month, puts her winnings back into the Bonds. I don’t. I generally buy something special for the house.

DH wanted something mended which is not essential, but a sentimental item, so worried about spending the money.
He won more or less the exact amount this month to cover the cost of repair. 🙂

Well…think we’ve been lucky. I’ve won over £1000 since March, husband £400

Nothing again.

Charleygirl5 Sat 02-Sept-23 11:42:36

I am sure my not winning a million this month was an admin error so no worries in October.

crazyH Sat 02-Sept-23 11:33:20

I didnt expect to be able to check till Monday so it was a lovely surprise to get 125.00 and husband got 325.00.

Its a bit of fun and it beefs up the bills account.

Charleygirl5 Sat 02-Sept-23 11:23:06

My win was £100. I was not really expecting anything as I have received something each month since January if only £25. The most I have ever won is £125 but I live in hope. Mine were bought many, many years ago.
