Another scam

We have had three calls in two days from a very persistent Asian sounding lady telling us that we have overpaid £140 for domestic appliance insurance, which she can get refunded - but needs details of the card to which the refund should be sent (ha ha). We haven’t taken out any such insurance, considering it a waste of money, but of course a lot of people do. So watch out for this one - after the third call we blocked the number.

Keep a whistle by the phone, give it a good blast then hang up grin

It's great you're aware of the scam. Sadly I think there are vulnerable, stressed, busy etc people who are taken in by some scams and I wish there were more deterrents to prevent this happening.

Thank you for raising this and hopefully it will stop some people from being expoited.

We had her call on Thursday. Firstly I told her I could not understand what she was saying, which was true. I knew it was a scam so I let her waste their money by asking her to speak more clearly. She did so very slowly. I told her we never insure domestic appliances so she could p* off!

They make me laugh because they are clearly Asian but call themselves Michael, Richard, Louise and Emma. 🤣🤣

Yes, always use English names, as if we’re going to be taken in by that. I’m very upset that Jack hasn’t called lately - blame my husband for blocking his number. 😄

I had a few of these on my landline and cannot block the numbers as I lost the manual for the set up. What I now do is say hello and when they start waffling on I just say, sorry, Chinese restaurant can I help you and they put the phone down.

Oddly I had a call from Domestic Insurance on Thursday, I have 2 washer/driers insured in apartments I let. It was genuine, they hadn’t got full addresses.

It difficult to tell genuine from scam calls, so I do listen until I’m sure either way

I tend to say, when they do this, "I do not think that is the name your mother gave you" and that makes them suddenly hang up.

Those who work in call centres are just trying to earn a living, so I try not to be rude to them. I just say No thank you and put the phone down. If I am pretty sure it is a scammer on the phone, I might string them along for a bit, but actually we don’t get many scam calls.

This one is still going, they've persistently phoned for
three weeks now, asking to speak to my wife.
she's not often in during day, but soon as I say she's not here
they cut me off
today she was in so i passed the call to my wife, they tried to get her full card no details, so we cut them off, and will now block thee number, as they tried another 4rings after that,

Even though this is an old post I got one of these calls yesterday for the first time ever. I told her she was mistaken on both counts (one that I was insured 2 that I had claimed) and asked where she had got her information from. She hung up.

I ask where they are based when they give a city I ask which couuntry is that in and that stumps them . If they ask for my husband I say that he is in prison at the moment so unble to speak to them . I must admit I enjoy winding them up .

Please DO NOT DO THIS!!! As much of a nuisance that these calls are, as has been said, they are being made by people just trying to earn a wage. Using whistle in this way could rupture the ear drum.

How long does it take you to say ' \Not interested' and put the phone down.

You're more generous towards them than I would be - as, in my book, there's no such thing as "just trying to make a living - as a thief".

I tend to think the greater the level of disapproval they are able to clearly register - then the greater the chance they might reform and change from "thieves" to "people" as I would put it.

There are huge call centres in South Asia & other countries 'staffed' by people who have been trafficked and forced to scam. Very sad. I just say no thanks and hang up.
