Yes I agree Oopsadaisy. We never use debit cards normally and like you credit cards. However, the payment requirements from the tax people required a debit card. Can’t understand why we didn’t receive a phone call on our landline.

We use Bank Transfer for the Tax man, the account details are on the Tax statement.

Could I suggest you ring the bank? Yes, I know it takes ages to get through and actually speak to someone, but they would be able to explain and hopefully sort this for you.

MrOops isn’t signed up for internet banking but has used his Debit Card online, only once (we were waiting for new Credit Cards) because it’s much safer to use your Credit Card for anything online.

Please be careful if you are using a Debit Card for any transactions, online or in shops. If anyone gets hold of those details they can empty your Bank Account.

We have two separate joint accounts with different banks which we manage separately for specific payments and purchases and 'my' account sends him a bank statement as well as me and the cheque books arrive with only his name on the front. However, 'DH's does not send me anything... I don't do online banking at all because of all the scamming. This thread should make me tackle these anomalies pronto as our arrangements were set up for similar reasons to OP's.....

Thank you SilverBrook. I didn’t log on in the app. We wanted to pay a tax bill so just went through the suggested www. Gov pathway. Thought he would be able to just use his debit card in normal way without being signed up for internet banking.

To have a joint account with Lloyds you would both need to be able to log on to Internet Banking or the Mobile Banking app. That’s what the Lloyds website says.

I’m wondering how you logged on when you first tried to make the transaction. Did you log in as yourself? In which case using his card could have flagged a problem. if it’s a joint account you should have a record somewhere of how he should log in. If you’ve lost that then you need to reset. See if this helps:

When I signed up for our account to-be online a few years ago it said that each of us had to sign up individually if we wanted to use it. Now I would like my dh to be able to use his debit card for online payments etc and also if I die or go in hospital (I’m 83) he would be able to use the account without any problems. The other day my dh needed to pay something online and I used his card as the bill was in his name so thought best to use it. All was well until they needed to confirm this was in order. It said we would get a phone call. Nothing happened but offered the Lloyds number to ring. No text, looked everywhere nothing. So I abandoned the payment and used my debit card. Immediately the app came up for me to go to it and I accepted it and the payment was made. His debit card is used to get money out of the bank and to pay for things but it didn’t allow him to use it online which is odd as the bank have our landline. Just wondering if I should now set up an online account for him. Thought originally that it was an unnecessary palaver involving different passwords etc. My dh is not that used to modern technology other than using google to look at things on the iPad I bought for him for his 80th birthday five years ago. I show him regularly how it works and get him to put in the initial letters required to access the account. He watches me make regular payments and looks at the statements but I’m sure any account in hs name would be pretty much unused. Also will the people we pay regularly will they have to be set up again? I’m only fretting a bit as my health isn’t so good at the moment and I don’t want to leave him with any problems he doesn’t need to have.
