Selling a car

I have just bought a car - no problems there (so far).
My old one is very old, 15 years I think, and needs some welding done to the underneath before it will pass its MOT in November. Its a nice little car apart from this and I hesitate to scrap it.
I thought I'd try to sell it for a few hundred pounds but don't know what to do about the log book (V5c, Registration Certificate).
Do I declare it SORN in which case I return the whole of the V5C to Swansea? Or do I do nothing and wait to see if anyone buys it then fill in the green part 5 of the V5C and give it to the buyer. Its not at all clear.
(I realise I must tell the buyer of the necessary welding problem)

You wait until you’ve sold it and then register a change of owner.

If you declare SORN nobody will be able to take it for a test drive.

Maintain the Insurance until it has a new owner if you are going to allow a test drive.

You’d get about £250 scrap for it and it would be uplifted from your premises. My SinL has just done that with his 10 year old Vauxhall, where repairs would have cost more than the car’s worth. It had failed its MOT, so wasn’t driveable, or allowed on the public highway,
Unless you’ve got a sort-after car, I can’t see many people wanting a 15 year old car that needs welding work to get it through an MOT. Have you any idea how serious that work is and at what cost? Were you to have the work done and the vehicle MOT’d at the earliest date possible, you could just sell via webuyanycar or similar.
You’ve also got the hassle of advertising, possible test drives (go with them) plus potential tyre-kickers who could offer you a silly price and all the time funding tax and insurance on 2 vehicles?

Sorry, if that seems a bit blunt - obviously I don’t know the make and model of your car or its likely value.

If you think it’s worth repairing advertise it as no MOT, small cars that run well are in demand

Is it diesel? They are fetching good prices on the second hand market.
Have you had a price for the welding?
Beware of the tire kickers 😉

Thanks - its a relief to know I don't need to do anything complicated with the registration doc Lathyrus3 thank you for that information.
All the same, It doesn't seem worth the hassle of selling it, so I'll possibly ask my neighbour to see if he can get someone from a scrapyard to take it.
I'd been getting quite worked up about what to do with it, finding insurance for the new one - such a lot of regulations to take into account.
No, its not a diesel.

Go on We buy any car. They were very good when I used them a couple of years ago

Whilst you wouldn’t get the full retail value you could sell it as is to ‘We buy any car . Com’ as that would get it off your hands

Astitchintime Thu 18-Sept-25 16:03:06

I’d sell to We Buy Any Car too. Never wanted random people coming round looking at cars that I was selling, you never know what they’re sizing up at the same time.

Make sure you are fully insured until money changes hands . Person came to look at friends car , looked it over , chatted , sat in drivers seat , looked about smiling, slammed door and drove off at high speed . Friend left standing in shock , car was worth thousands but he had allowed insurance to lapse . He lost everything sadly . Stay insured right till the end .

‘Tyre kickers’ - never heard that term before

Mojack26 Thu 18-Sept-25 20:11:00

Are you driving it or using it at all or is it off the road? In which case it's SORN as it's not being driven as it has no tax or MOT.

Georgesgran Thu 18-Sept-25 20:16:09

Same thing as ‘carpet treaders’ crazyH - nosey people who view houses, with absolutely no intention of buying.

Georgesgran Thu 18-Sept-25 20:18:02

It’s still legal to November Mojack26 but the OP says she’s now probably going to scrap it,

You obviously haven’t sold many cars 😉
In days of yore it was a well known saying.
