With regard to the last part.. I didn’t return my paper licence when I renewed at 70. That was 5 years ago. No one has chased me for it.

I recently filled in renewal for driving licence at 70.

I don't have a passport I didn't need one to fill in the form.

I didn't have to send a new photo.

I seem to think I did put my N.I number in and this is probably how they verified me.

I received my licence back within approx. Two weeks no problems.

I can’t see what’s on the D46P but it’s only for people age 70 and over reapplying for a licence. DVLA know how old you are.

Age UK advice doesn’t say anything about returning a paper licence only ones that have a photo. It says:

How do I renew my licence?

The DVLA should send you a D46P application form 90 days before your 70th birthday.

Don’t forget to apply for any extra categories of vehicle covered on your old licence if you still want to be able to drive them. There might be extra costs for these but if you don’t apply for these extra categories you’ll only be able to drive a car in future.

If your licence expires and you don't apply for a new one, you won't legally be allowed to drive.

Renewing by post

If you have a photocard licence, fill in the D46P form and return it to the DVLA with your current driving licence photocard. You may also need to include a new passport-type photo – the form will tell you if so.

If you have a paper licence, fill in the D46P form and return it to the DVLA with an up-to-date passport-type photo enclosed.

I do not have a passport, have always renewed my licence since I turned 70 on line.
I do keep a passport type photo on my laptop so that I can provide this for any organisation that requires it. Get those at one of those DIY photo booths. Also need to send that for my bus pass.

Section 1. Do not fill in name and address details unless these have changed ( they have not).

But in section 1 there is also a space for my DoB . This isnt on the form D46P. Its on my driving licence though.

Question - Do I still need to put this in even though I do not need to put in my name and address? The form advice is silent.

Just for information because I thought it would prevent the need for people telling me other things:

I have to renew my photo because my photo is due to expire together with my licence.

I cannot do this online as I do not have a passport . The dvla use passport photo's taken from your passport to renew a photo online. They will not accept any other form of passport photo on a renewal ( not even one you already have on your computer)

I have to renew my photo physically. My choices are the Post Office ( not viable as the nearest one is forty miles+ away who can do this) or do it by post.

Clearly this is not an issue most people have.

I therefore need to supply a passport type photo in colour and attach it to the D46P. I have this photo. I did it with an online company that specialises in producing such photo's.

I am not renewing any sections on my licence ( like C or D as I dont use them so I dont need a D1.

To re iterate, does anyone know if I need to put in my DoB because its not on the form. It seems to be in section 1 b ut the advice of the dvla is ambiguous. I thought someone who has done this might know.

I already have a photocard licence ( the photo on it expires on my birthday like the licence itself and so needs to be renewed).

I have lost my old licence because I put it away " Safely" after I last used it ( election time as ID) and have no idea where I put it. I have turned the house upside down for it. . The form says I need to send the licence back. I cannot. Should I just tick the box " Lost"?

Just put you dob in. If they don't need it they'll just disregard it.

I still don't understand about your date of birth question, The DVLA knows it. they wouldn't have sent you the renewal notice if they didn't. But, you seem to be talking about two forms, one which asks for DOB and one which doesn't

I put NA in sections were no information is required - ie Not Applicable

My photo is rather old too but acceptable, apparently. Anyone can still see it's me!

ON the D46P I have there is a space for DoB ( its in section 1 where name and address are , together with place of birth - right at the bottom of that section before it asks for a mobile phone number and an e mail address.

What I said was on the form, my D oB does not appear , so I do not know if I am supposed to enter it or not. Same with place of birth. The form is a bit ambiguous because it says do not fill in this section unless your details are different from the form - but it doesnt mention DoB or place of birth in that statement. I just dont want to get it wrong.

My photo is 10 years old. They state they want a new photo. Thats it basically. Hence I cannot make the renewal online ( as I dont have a passport which is the only way they would accept an online application).

I could go to Tesco phto booth but I found a place called photoID online which takes a picture of you on the computer and then crops it up to fit the needs of a passport photo, so I have used that. It also tells you if the picture meets the standards by checking it. If it doesnt , it tells you and you take another picture for it until you get it right. But whether that ( or one from Tesco will be accepted I dont kn ow. I just o-hope so.

I know the post office do it ( and the form says so) but there are no post offices left near me who actually do that service.
