Do you live far away from where you grew up?

I was born in Manchester - my husband was born in Bolton, but moved with his parents to Devon when he was two. We met in East Anglia, married in Manchester and are now living in Devon. I have discovered that our great grandparents lived four doors apart from each other in a tiny Lancashire village. Were we meant for each other?

Hi All, Grew up in Buffalo, New York. After 10 years in US Navy ended up in Thurso, Scotland in 1970. Been here ever since through thick and thin.

Just a thought - and sorry if I digress too far - how would it sound if we all gathered from our present homes, bringing with us of course our original and acquired accents? So far I think I'd expect the whole country to be represented from the North of Scotland via 'the North', the midlands the London area and the deep south. Add in Wales and our overseas grans and we'd have a fascinating mix!

I was borned in Mexico, last century seems to be a long time ago and a long way away, moved about a bit with my naval family - The Golf, The Atlantic, The Pacific, seems to some exciting, but I do relish the constancy of living in one place.

Gally - whenever I've returned to the Midlands (from whence I came!) I realise how I just couldn't live at that pace again! A village in Fife not very far from the sea, with countryside all around me now. That's all I want now!

Janice.... know how you feel. Born and 'brought up' in Anglesey ....everywhere else feels land-locked! Missing the sound of the sea!

born in Brighton-moved to Camberley then Bedfordshire and then Tunbridge Wells in my teens. Lived abroad as a child and an adult but now back in Tunbridge Wells. I've lived in about 25 different houses in my life and have finally found one that feels like home. I chose it and bought it myself after my divorce and have made it my own-I love it and the village I live in.
I have a boyfriend (younger than me ) and he lived with his parents until he was in his 30s a few miles from where he was born and has never lived anywhere else. I find this odd after my own experience and it has definitely made him narrow minded as he hasn't travelled much either.

Lucky you Gally, I have a great yen for life on the west coast of Scotland, but am afraid that`s all it`ll have to be now, a yen.

Born in Westminster; raised in Sarf Lundin then West Sussex until I was 32; since then moved to Scottish seaside (numberplease) where we have been for 30 years. Have a niggling urge to return South to be near family, but it just takes a visit south to put that at the back of my mind - soooo busy.

Oh how I am pleased to find this topic. I grew up in Poole, Dorset. My late husband's job took us to Farnham, Surrey and we moved thereafter to Woking, Wokingham then to the end of the world ... Cambridge (sorry anyone who loves Cambridge). When he died I could not immediately move 'home' as my younger son was still at school and happily during this time I met a lovely man and remarried so I am still in Cambridg - well Newmarket actually. I have now been in East Anglia for 20 years and still cannot settle here, I am so homesick and miss the sea terribly. It is unlikely that I will ever return to the West Country now as my husband yearns for Scotland where he grew up and obviously a compromise will have to be found when he retires/

Oldgreymare - how interesting it would be if at this stage I suddenly realised that we are related! But no - don't think so. Ours is a fairly tenuous link but I've been surprised how many people have responded re Dundee. Enjoy your research - I'm not into it myself but I know several friends who find it a very satisfying hobby.

Even I have a Dundee connection! Again, thanks to Family History research, I've discovered a Gt. Grandad born in Dundee..... went by the name of David Stratton Duncan, went being the operative word as he seems to have disappeared, possibly lost at sea but no death record. (Cynical researcher/friend reckons a lot of Seamen set up new families across the globe!!!)

Lived in Hove until I was 12 then moved to Hassocks, then back to Hove. At 16 years moved to Beirut for two years and then back to Hove. At 23 I married, moved to Kensington for two years and then moved to Kingston upon Thames and there I have lived for the past 40 years!

Hormonesnomore - it's been a while since your post about Dundee and I'm sorry I missed it. Feel free to get in touch and have a wee wallow in nostalgia! PM if you prefer - we might just bore other grans - although lots of folk on here seem to have a Dundee connection!

Anglesey,College in Cardiff, Hertfordshire, Somerset, Germany, back to Somerset. My Gran said her family came from Somerset but I didn't believe her ( she never admitted to her age either until she got to 90, then it was 'I'm 90 you know!') She was quite right as searching for my ancestors has proved, maybe I have come back to my roots!

Suffolk coast is OK - quite varied.
I prefer the Norfolk one especially around Wells next the sea.
I've always lived in Suffolk but hope to move to Norfolk soon,
My Grandfather came from there so I have the odd root or two.

em I grew up in Dundee too but no longer live there (hundreds of miles away now ).

I love it here, but still get very homesick - Dundee is a very special place.

Both DH and I grew up in Norfolk, spent time in Devon then Malta. Have been in Dorset over 30 years, we love it and have no plans to move again.

Yoga, gosh do people actually say that? I was very glad to leave home (more from an unpleasant father than actual Swindon to be fair) but if there is no reason to go and you find happiness on your doorstep, then how can that be criticised?

To those of you who say that it's "sad" to live so close to where you grew up, I disagree. I think that is shows that you are truly happy with your lot and have happy memories of where you grew up as well

Grew up mostly in (whisper it) Swindon.......managed to escape though! Am now living amongst glorious Herefordshire countryside!
