Testing the water for a "Northern mini-national"

There was talk of a National meetup a little while ago, but nothing concrete seems to have happened about it. There was a lot of general interest then, but how many people are still interested and would come to an all-day meeting in Edinburgh in November/December? If there are enough to make it worth the effort of organising it, I shall make a detailed plan and agenda and take serious names.

Central Edinburgh is a magical place around Christmas, so a meeting at a date from the end of November would be good (St Andrews Day is the 30th November, highly suitable, and the decorations and entertainments in Princes St Gardens open just before that) Time for gift shopping could be built in.

Here is a possible scenario - a meeting room overlooking the castle booked for the day from 9 to 5, with three tea/coffee/cake/biscuit breaks, a buffet lunch, and a couple of talks on relevant subjects, plus time for limitless socialising and retail therapy on Princes St. This would cost, at a very vague reckoning, about £25 a head plus £7.50 each for lunch. A bit of negotiation might bring it down, but that is a conjecture, so is a spot of fundraising of some kind to offset the cost. (GN have indicated that they are not able to offer any funding) Other places might be cheaper or dearer, but this is somewhere that we know does a good lunch and afternoon tea and has a nice atmosphere. There is a lift. There would be room for up to 40.

There are usually travel deals on at that time of year. There are a lot of hotels/B&Bs etc in Edinburgh, (lists are available from the information centre), and we might get a bulk rate if several people want to stay over in the the same place.

I don't know yet whether this will be viable, so there is no guarantee that it will happen, but it could be a very enjoyable day. If you are interested enough to be counted in provisionally, please pm me.

My fight is horribly early. It is the only one! It gets in at 08.10!
I'll get a taxi to the hotel . I'll see if I can get a room at the one we have the do at!

thatbags Sat 12-Oct-13 21:39:37

Yay! Well done, galen.

How many on your list now, elegran?

glassortwo Sat 12-Oct-13 21:35:10

Get in * galen* (as they say up here) grin

Galen Sat 12-Oct-13 21:30:43

Ok! You lot have persuaded me!
I've remounted the horse! Got the bit between my teeth and bitten the bullet! I now have a mouthful!
I've booked the flights!
I arrive in Edinborough at some horrendously early hour on the 30th nov go back in the afternoon on the 2 December!
All I've got to do now is book a disabled friendly hotel. I basically need a room with a walk in shower. I suppose I could manage at the booked hotel with just a strip wash! And it would probably be the easiest.
Elegran I think you want some money from me?
Can you pm details?

Elegran Sat 12-Oct-13 20:56:54

Tegan, It is not the hotel that is the problem, there are plenty of disabled friendly hotels. It is the travelling after the Heathrow fiasco. I think it will be OK Bristol-Edinburgh, but Galen is still hesitant.

glassortwo Sat 12-Oct-13 20:54:34

Oh just realised its Sunday night you mean sad

glassortwo Sat 12-Oct-13 20:53:13

Oh tegan we can all get together on Saturday night (if you would like too), gillybob is putting up with my snoring grin

Tegan Sat 12-Oct-13 20:33:39

I probably wouldn't mind sharing a room at the hotel on the Sunday night if she could put up with my snoring....we could then tootle for a bit round Edinburgh on Monday morning smile.

Marelli Sat 12-Oct-13 20:28:58

Galen, please try and come. As Elegran says, once you're up here, you'll get al the help you need. Can you think of anyone who might be able to help you at your end of things?

Elegran Sat 12-Oct-13 20:18:36

I could meet her at the airport in Edinburgh if that would help!

Elegran Sat 12-Oct-13 20:17:27

Is there ANYONE in the Portishead/Bristol area who could escort Galen to Bristol airport and get her and her luggage to the departure gate?

I know that she will be looked after once she lands in Edinburgh, and put into a taxi with her cases. After that any decent hotel will get her and her luggage to her room.

If she loses confidence in travelling because of Heathrow's incompetence, that is something else they ought to have on their conscience!

glassortwo Sat 12-Oct-13 19:51:10

ffinnochio it would be great if you could escort galen get both of you for the price of one grin

ffinnochio Sat 12-Oct-13 19:44:10

galen If I lived closer, I would love to escort you! I've recently acquired my Masters in airport navigation, with attitude! (A MANa) smile

glassortwo Sat 12-Oct-13 19:37:04

Oh come galen dont let that lot at Heathrow stop you enjoying life.

Elegran Sat 12-Oct-13 19:22:45

Blame Heathrow!

thatbags Sat 12-Oct-13 19:10:00

Aw, that's a shame, galen.

Galen Sat 12-Oct-13 17:52:36

I'll be thinking of you all (and probably kicking myself!)

Galen Sat 12-Oct-13 17:51:38

Sorry but I've chickened out folks. I think my get up and go has got up and gonesad

wisewoman Sat 12-Oct-13 17:34:51

Marelli we were in a residential caravan for a week overlooking the East Sands. At the beginning of the week we were lunching outside with a glass of wine but by the end of the week we had freezing winds. That is what happens when you holiday in Scotland I suppose but I LOVE it. Raging seas, white horses and scudding clouds are just the thing at this time of year. I didn't want to come home. I thought you would have fish and chips rather than ice cream in this weather.

Marelli Sat 12-Oct-13 15:59:49

Just come back from St Andrews half-an-hour ago, wisewoman! We had a wander round and bought cheese and apples from Mellis's, crusty rolls from Fisher and Donaldson's and sat on a seat looking out at the sea, eating it all - well, not ALL of it, but quite a bit grin! Rather bracing to say the least, but it didn't stop us driving round the East Neuk to Pittenweem for an ice-cream as well! shockgrin

wisewoman Sat 12-Oct-13 15:51:15

Just back from a week in St Andrews and getting back on Gransnet. Good to hear so many people are coming to the "Meet Up". Sure it will be an interesting day. Well done Elegran. I am filled with admiration for you. Having had experience of organising things in another life I swore I would never do it again. The responsibility!!!!

Marelli Sat 12-Oct-13 15:51:03

Tegan, it's the same place where we all had that lovely lunch You, Elizabeth1, Elegran and I. smile

Elegran Sat 12-Oct-13 13:34:12

Yes, that is where it is being held, tegan.

Tegan Sat 12-Oct-13 11:09:31

Elegran; is that actually the same place where the meet up is? Because I was pondering on staying over for a night given that I won't be arriving till mid way through Sunday.

Galen Sat 12-Oct-13 10:55:21

Will see if I can get flights
