Testing the water for a "Northern mini-national"

There was talk of a National meetup a little while ago, but nothing concrete seems to have happened about it. There was a lot of general interest then, but how many people are still interested and would come to an all-day meeting in Edinburgh in November/December? If there are enough to make it worth the effort of organising it, I shall make a detailed plan and agenda and take serious names.

Central Edinburgh is a magical place around Christmas, so a meeting at a date from the end of November would be good (St Andrews Day is the 30th November, highly suitable, and the decorations and entertainments in Princes St Gardens open just before that) Time for gift shopping could be built in.

Here is a possible scenario - a meeting room overlooking the castle booked for the day from 9 to 5, with three tea/coffee/cake/biscuit breaks, a buffet lunch, and a couple of talks on relevant subjects, plus time for limitless socialising and retail therapy on Princes St. This would cost, at a very vague reckoning, about £25 a head plus £7.50 each for lunch. A bit of negotiation might bring it down, but that is a conjecture, so is a spot of fundraising of some kind to offset the cost. (GN have indicated that they are not able to offer any funding) Other places might be cheaper or dearer, but this is somewhere that we know does a good lunch and afternoon tea and has a nice atmosphere. There is a lift. There would be room for up to 40.

There are usually travel deals on at that time of year. There are a lot of hotels/B&Bs etc in Edinburgh, (lists are available from the information centre), and we might get a bulk rate if several people want to stay over in the the same place.

I don't know yet whether this will be viable, so there is no guarantee that it will happen, but it could be a very enjoyable day. If you are interested enough to be counted in provisionally, please pm me.

We booked through hotels.com who have double and twin rooms with breakfast and Wi-Fi for £130.
Looking forward to it.

Well done, elegran, for organising this.

Do come, Galen. I have PMed you, and MindfulGrandma too. This is getting better all the time. Now all I have to do is make sure it is all organised right . . .

moomin Sat 12-Oct-13 09:00:39

Come on Galen - I'd love to see you there!

Marelli Sat 12-Oct-13 08:55:41

Galen, it would be great to have you there with us! The venue (RSOL) has a lift and I would think it will very likely have a good disabled access, though Elegran will be able to tell you for sure. Glass and Gillybob have booked a room there, too. smile

Galen Fri 11-Oct-13 23:09:09

I've missed this thread! Is ther a a flight and disabled access hotel in easy access?
My birthday is dec 3 and this would be SO nice! I would have to fly to and fro from Bristol. Would this be feasible? I'd love to meet our northern branch!

Thats good tegan how long will it take from Berwick?

Tegan Fri 11-Oct-13 19:38:06

Chap at Berwick Station knew nothing about the line work on 1st [images of Fat Controller type person scratching his head on said date going 'where's all the bloomin' trains today?'] but did a bit of ringing around and told the S.O. that there will be super dooper buses running from Berwick Station from @ 10.30.

I have PMed Madrigal, tanmack, Tish, and nipsmum with the details. If anyone else would like more information, PM me and I will send you all the facts.

I AM looking forward to this!

glassortwo Fri 11-Oct-13 09:20:40

Hello to you all it's fantastic to see some new names showing an interest, looking forward to seeing everyone. smile

Elegran Fri 11-Oct-13 09:04:13

There are more details in my post on Thu 26-Sep-13 at 22:40, but I shall PM those of you who have expressed an interest. The date is Sunday 1st December. That was in my post yesterday at 17:29.

The bad news is that I need a £15 deposit from you as soon as possible, if you are definitely coming, so as to pay the deposit on the booking (the rest a week or so before the event). The good news is that with the people who have signed up already, it is certain to be fun.

See you on 1st December.

Tish Fri 11-Oct-13 04:37:50
