Testing the water for a "Northern mini-national"

There was talk of a National meetup a little while ago, but nothing concrete seems to have happened about it. There was a lot of general interest then, but how many people are still interested and would come to an all-day meeting in Edinburgh in November/December? If there are enough to make it worth the effort of organising it, I shall make a detailed plan and agenda and take serious names.

Central Edinburgh is a magical place around Christmas, so a meeting at a date from the end of November would be good (St Andrews Day is the 30th November, highly suitable, and the decorations and entertainments in Princes St Gardens open just before that) Time for gift shopping could be built in.

Here is a possible scenario - a meeting room overlooking the castle booked for the day from 9 to 5, with three tea/coffee/cake/biscuit breaks, a buffet lunch, and a couple of talks on relevant subjects, plus time for limitless socialising and retail therapy on Princes St. This would cost, at a very vague reckoning, about £25 a head plus £7.50 each for lunch. A bit of negotiation might bring it down, but that is a conjecture, so is a spot of fundraising of some kind to offset the cost. (GN have indicated that they are not able to offer any funding) Other places might be cheaper or dearer, but this is somewhere that we know does a good lunch and afternoon tea and has a nice atmosphere. There is a lift. There would be room for up to 40.

There are usually travel deals on at that time of year. There are a lot of hotels/B&Bs etc in Edinburgh, (lists are available from the information centre), and we might get a bulk rate if several people want to stay over in the the same place.

I don't know yet whether this will be viable, so there is no guarantee that it will happen, but it could be a very enjoyable day. If you are interested enough to be counted in provisionally, please pm me.

I have just remembered that the ROSL have a big St Andrews Day dinner on Saturday night, so you people staying there could push the boat out.

It is £40 a head, pre-dinner drink, 3 courses, wine, coffee. At one time they were asking for bookings ahead, but I can't find that now. The phone number is 0131 225 1501.

I can't see any problems that weekend on London to Edinburgh Line and I have booked a room in the ROSL for Saturday night so will have no distance to travel!!
I have to get the 17.56 from Waverley though to stand any chance of being reasonably awake for Monday morning!

Elegran Sat 28-Sept-13 12:28:15

I have just learnt that staying at the ROSL is only £15 dearer than at the Travelodge, and includes breakfast. Hope that information is useful to someone.

Who is having problems with transport?

PM me with the location and I will see what www.travelinescotland.com has to say about it. You put in where you are going from and to and what time you want to arrive/leave and they give you alternatives. It might have to be on Saturday but can I put up a few people overnight, other GNers probably spare rooms, and there are stacks of B&Bs in Edinburgh.

Returning is mostly not such a problem.

Elegran Sat 28-Sept-13 11:11:56

They look OK to York too.

moomin Sat 28-Sept-13 10:21:09

Trains look OK to Newcastle Elegran but not so good I think for Northallerton for YaYa

moomin Sat 28-Sept-13 10:19:55

Try this link Tegan: bit.ly/1eOK1h5 bus from Berwick to Edinburgh

Elegran Sat 28-Sept-13 10:19:36

Sorry, moomin!

Elegran Sat 28-Sept-13 10:18:43

This is indeed a b*****r. Just as we getting off the ground. It is OK for those who plan to drive - is there any chance of a spot of petrol-sharing or is everyone so far apart that that would not work?

The alternative is to travel on Saturday and stay in a cheap B&B overnight. I'll have a look and see if there are any B&Bs. I could sleep 4 in two rooms if you don't mind sharing double beds. There may be other Scottish GNers who could give you a bed for a night or two.

What are the trains back like on Sunday?

Tegan Sat 28-Sept-13 10:11:26

Heck; need to have a plan, although it's only a short walk from the station and I'd still get the afternoon there. Are there buses to Edinburgh from Berwick?

moomin Sat 28-Sept-13 10:10:34

Perhaps we can all hitch-hike and pretend we're back in the '60s smile

janeainsworth Sat 28-Sept-13 09:51:24

Fraid so Tegan
Earliest train from Berwick on 1st Dec is 11.25, getting to Edinburgh 12.45

Bit of a b*gg*er, there are no coaches either.

Tegan Sat 28-Sept-13 09:09:49

I'm getting the train from Berwick; am I likely to have a problem with that one moomin?

YaYaJen Sat 28-Sept-13 09:08:50

OO maybe an idea Moomin, trains return would have taken over 8 hours which is beyond me physically hmm

moomin Sat 28-Sept-13 08:31:07

Yep Elegran you've missed me out! Have looked at trains on 1st December and there are none before 9:10 and that one goes via a change at Carlisle (!!) and arrives in Edinburgh at 12:38. Presume they will be doing "engineering works" or something during the night.

Perhaps us NE grannies will have to hire a mini-bus confused

Elegran Fri 27-Sept-13 22:48:05

Well done, GillieB. That is twelve definite - myself, Thatbags, Marelli, Wisewoman, Gillybob, Janeainsworth, Glassortwo, Tegan, Granny23, Elizabeth1, Pittcity, GillyB.

GillieB Fri 27-Sept-13 20:52:17

Elegran - put me down, too, please - DH has confirmed that we have nothing else on that day - it'll be great to renew friendships made last October. Must now do something about arranging transport.

YaYaJen Fri 27-Sept-13 19:52:48

Sorry, Sundays are grandson days plus the return train Sundays takes over 8 hours compared to under 5 week days - journey alone would floor me for a week...OH still has not found another job after redundancy so all a bit difficult sorry..

Pittcity Fri 27-Sept-13 19:43:39

You can put me down too as I have convinced the OH that a weekend in Edinburgh would be lovely and he agreed. smile

thatbags Fri 27-Sept-13 18:37:12

smile

Elegran Fri 27-Sept-13 18:21:12

Good!

Tegan Fri 27-Sept-13 18:15:43

Yep!

Elegran Fri 27-Sept-13 17:46:31

Tegan Can I put you down as definite, then?

Elegran Fri 27-Sept-13 17:45:13

They might be OK in that direction, promoting themselves, but they definitely have it in their constitution that they don't do anything to promote other organisations which have a hint of a profit motive. I'd feel a bit off inviting them, to be honest.

wisewoman Fri 27-Sept-13 17:26:32

How strange of U3A not to want to promote themselves to a new market. Oh well! I am sure the Open University has no such qualms. I am sure others will have good ideas about speakers.
