Testing the water for a "Northern mini-national"

There was talk of a National meetup a little while ago, but nothing concrete seems to have happened about it. There was a lot of general interest then, but how many people are still interested and would come to an all-day meeting in Edinburgh in November/December? If there are enough to make it worth the effort of organising it, I shall make a detailed plan and agenda and take serious names.

Central Edinburgh is a magical place around Christmas, so a meeting at a date from the end of November would be good (St Andrews Day is the 30th November, highly suitable, and the decorations and entertainments in Princes St Gardens open just before that) Time for gift shopping could be built in.

Here is a possible scenario - a meeting room overlooking the castle booked for the day from 9 to 5, with three tea/coffee/cake/biscuit breaks, a buffet lunch, and a couple of talks on relevant subjects, plus time for limitless socialising and retail therapy on Princes St. This would cost, at a very vague reckoning, about £25 a head plus £7.50 each for lunch. A bit of negotiation might bring it down, but that is a conjecture, so is a spot of fundraising of some kind to offset the cost. (GN have indicated that they are not able to offer any funding) Other places might be cheaper or dearer, but this is somewhere that we know does a good lunch and afternoon tea and has a nice atmosphere. There is a lift. There would be room for up to 40.

There are usually travel deals on at that time of year. There are a lot of hotels/B&Bs etc in Edinburgh, (lists are available from the information centre), and we might get a bulk rate if several people want to stay over in the the same place.

I don't know yet whether this will be viable, so there is no guarantee that it will happen, but it could be a very enjoyable day. If you are interested enough to be counted in provisionally, please pm me.

I've looked, tegan and I don't see any current Ediinburgh deals on Groupon - but they have a deal on the hotel on Arran where we stayed for two nights when the ferry was stormbound!

"Isle of Arran: 2 or 3 Nights For Two With Breakfast from £79 at Kildonan Hotel (Up to 63% Off)" A bit far to travel for a day in Edinburgh, unfortunately, but an attractive thought.

Sorry not to see you glammanana. Maybe after Easter?

Elegran Wed 25-Sept-13 10:54:05

Thanks, Tegan I must take a look at that and pass on the information to anyone interested.

glammanana Wed 25-Sept-13 10:24:56

I would love to come up and meet everyone but catering booking have me busy until Easter and they are not something I can leave someone else to do,oh what a shame I would really like to join the meet-up.sad

Tegan Wed 25-Sept-13 10:22:49

I saw that groupon were advertising an Edinburgh package which included transport [flight] and accomodation; and Guardian holidays offer similar packages as well [but with train travel I think].

Elegran Wed 25-Sept-13 10:11:27

A pity, Phoenix I would love to meet you in the flesh.

Anne58 Tue 24-Sept-13 23:27:06

Thanks Elegran but not really viable for me at present. sad

Elegran Tue 24-Sept-13 21:40:54

Phoenix and JuneH Have you thought of flying up? It is cheaper and quicker than the train.

Elegran Tue 24-Sept-13 21:32:47

Yes! Ariadne You'd be here in an hour.

glassortwo Tue 24-Sept-13 21:30:13

grin thanks elegran just dotting the i's and crossing the t's wink

Ariadne Tue 24-Sept-13 21:28:18

Like it! Could fly from Exeter....

Elegran Tue 24-Sept-13 21:23:38

Glass I had already counted you in automatically!

Elegran Tue 24-Sept-13 21:23:12

GillieB if the 30th does not work out, maybe you will be there after all.

June and Phoenix a pity it is so far, I would love to meet you. Perhaps someone will be inspired to organise another further south.

Those of us who live further into the north of Scotland are in the same position when things are organised in the south or London. There are good rail connections from Edinburgh and Glasgow and Aberdeen and Perth, but first you have to get to these cities.

glassortwo Tue 24-Sept-13 21:12:20

elegran count me in.

juneh Tue 24-Sept-13 20:43:46

It would be nice but a bit too far from North Wales it would be good to get together with other editors too. Maybe we could arrange something midway somewhere. I like your idea smile

Anne58 Tue 24-Sept-13 20:04:30

Too far from Devon, but hope it all goes well and that you have a lovely time.

GillieB Tue 24-Sept-13 19:53:11

I would have liked to have come, but can't do the 30th November, I am afraid. It sounds like a lovely idea, though. Good luck with getting something organised.

Elegran Tue 24-Sept-13 19:35:44

Thanks, an argument for holding it on 30th November.

Wheniwasyourage Tue 24-Sept-13 19:09:58

You mention travel deals Elegran. For information, the current ScotRail Club 55 offer, which lets you travel in Scotland (and from Carlisle and Berwick, I think, but not on East Coast trains) for £19 return finishes on the 30th November.

Elegran Tue 24-Sept-13 17:51:32

YaYaJen As soon as a date and place are fixed you will hear about it. Grandmanorm I do hope DH is well enough for you to come. fingers crossed.

Grandmanorm Tue 24-Sept-13 17:36:18

As long as DH is fine I would love to be there. I have missed the Edinburgh meetings due to DH but with a bit of luck he should be fine by then.

YaYaJen Tue 24-Sept-13 17:35:59

I am interested, the earlier a definite date is set the more likely it is that I can get an advance cheap train ticket, not been to Edinburgh for years and would be lovely to visit again so yes as long as train fare not extortionate.

Elegran Tue 24-Sept-13 17:19:29

Weekends would be better for everyone, I think, but that could be the cue for a dozen posts from people who can only come through the week . . .

Whatever day it is, I don't think it can completely get going too soon. If it is available earlier then the early birds can start on the coffee and catch up on the gossip.

thatbags Tue 24-Sept-13 17:14:15

I wouldn't be there by nine either. More like tennish.

Jenner Tue 24-Sept-13 17:12:20

Would love to. Not sure of travel costs though. Can look into it and see. Can only do weekends as working.
