Testing the water for a "Northern mini-national"

There was talk of a National meetup a little while ago, but nothing concrete seems to have happened about it. There was a lot of general interest then, but how many people are still interested and would come to an all-day meeting in Edinburgh in November/December? If there are enough to make it worth the effort of organising it, I shall make a detailed plan and agenda and take serious names.

Central Edinburgh is a magical place around Christmas, so a meeting at a date from the end of November would be good (St Andrews Day is the 30th November, highly suitable, and the decorations and entertainments in Princes St Gardens open just before that) Time for gift shopping could be built in.

Here is a possible scenario - a meeting room overlooking the castle booked for the day from 9 to 5, with three tea/coffee/cake/biscuit breaks, a buffet lunch, and a couple of talks on relevant subjects, plus time for limitless socialising and retail therapy on Princes St. This would cost, at a very vague reckoning, about £25 a head plus £7.50 each for lunch. A bit of negotiation might bring it down, but that is a conjecture, so is a spot of fundraising of some kind to offset the cost. (GN have indicated that they are not able to offer any funding) Other places might be cheaper or dearer, but this is somewhere that we know does a good lunch and afternoon tea and has a nice atmosphere. There is a lift. There would be room for up to 40.

There are usually travel deals on at that time of year. There are a lot of hotels/B&Bs etc in Edinburgh, (lists are available from the information centre), and we might get a bulk rate if several people want to stay over in the the same place.

I don't know yet whether this will be viable, so there is no guarantee that it will happen, but it could be a very enjoyable day. If you are interested enough to be counted in provisionally, please pm me.

Glass I slept better last night than so far. I am getting used to lying in an unfamiliar position. Was woken at 7.30 by the phone, the plumber returning yesterday's call. He will come today to make the upstairs loo flush again. Perfect timing for it to seize up, when the bucket-of-water-into-it solution is beyond me.
JA suggested forum names and first names for nametags. Seems a good idea.

Well done Elegran. Just picked up this link having been away for 2 weeks in the blazing sun. So sorry to hear of your accident it must have been really sore. I watch ER stories all the time and it must have been a nightmare for you. Like I said before you must have the energy of a 5 year old (jealous). I am so looking forward to meeting up with all on the 1st, Edinburgh is sooo beautiful at this time of the year.
When I retired just last year a friend and I wandered the streets of Edinburgh amongst the hustle and bustle of Christmas and all the gorgeous lights. Having had a few tipples of various and exciting cocktails along George Street we got on the train to come home and blow me down forgot to open the train doors at our stop (due to our high jinx on the train) What a palaver as my husband was waiting for us. Memories eh.

Thank you so much for arranging this get together - you're a star sunshine

glassortwo Wed 20-Nov-13 21:30:35

Hope you manage a good night elegran moon

Elegran Wed 20-Nov-13 21:27:59

I am off to put a hot water bottle in the microwave and go to bed now. See you again tomorrow.

glassortwo Wed 20-Nov-13 21:26:36

What do you all want on the name tags forum name and real names or just forum names?

Elegran Wed 20-Nov-13 21:24:48

We will fill a plate with goodies and keep it for you if you have not arrived.
If you are grabbed by Brendan Foster, bring him along.

Tegan Wed 20-Nov-13 21:18:34

I've no idea what time the bus will get me there by; will there still be food left?? Will pop a cheque in the post before I forget. If for any reason [snowdrifts, being kidnapped by Brendan Foster etc] I don't get to Edinburgh please drag someone in off the street and feed them my food smile.

Elegran Wed 20-Nov-13 21:02:53

What do you think about forum names and real names? From our posts, we are recognised first by our forum names, but our real names are known to those we have met. I am not sure.

Elegran Wed 20-Nov-13 21:01:22

£32.40. Jane Thinking about it, it would be better if I had it all in by a couple of days before the 1st December, and I write them one cheque on the day. It saves us scrabbling round counting it all out. Send it as soon as you like, but before the 29th November, that is Friday of next week. That will mean I know it is all in the bank ready.

By the way, I have not yet put the deposit cheques I received earlier into my bank (must do that soon), so they will be listed in your statements pretty near the ones for the balance. I hope that no-one was hoping to spread the effect of the two cheques over two months.

glassortwo Wed 20-Nov-13 20:55:38

Are you wanting both forum names and real names?

glassortwo Wed 20-Nov-13 20:54:31

Right I have got it sorted elegran I will look for your pm with names .

janeainsworth Wed 20-Nov-13 20:53:07

What is the balance Elegran?

Elegran Wed 20-Nov-13 20:51:55

They say we can pay up to and including the day. That means we all have to remember to have it with us, of course, and not spend it in the German Market at lunchtime.

Elegran Wed 20-Nov-13 20:50:15

Could you, glass? That would be good. I must find the name of the GNer who is coming with MindfulGrandma. I will pm you with that and G23's sister's own name - she is not a member but came to one of our coffee do's with G23.

glassortwo Wed 20-Nov-13 20:48:39

elegran what about the balance to pay for the day, do you want that sent to you or done on the day?

Elegran Wed 20-Nov-13 20:47:05

Amazon here I come. No, wait, I have a friend who had one about ten years ago. She used it to drive the cat into a frenzy. I'll try her first.

glassortwo Wed 20-Nov-13 20:47:02

Are you sure or I could do them for you?

moomin Wed 20-Nov-13 20:44:42

Great glass, thanks for sorting out. Elegran sound like you've got most things covered - don't have red laser pointy thing, they look quite expensive at PC World but quite cheap on Amazon

Elegran Wed 20-Nov-13 20:26:15

glass On Tuesday I will be on a coach on its way to the Highland Wildlife Park for the day. Compared to that, Edinburgh is the Riviera.

(There are still some seats on the coach, if any of you in the Edinburgh area or on the road through Fife to Kingussie would like a trip - only £20 including entry to the park, coffee and biscuits and a talk of some kind, leaving the front of Edinburgh Zoo at 8am and returning by 5pm. It is an extra day tacked on to the 8 talks in the LA adult leisure class a the zoo, but there are not quite enough people to fill all the places, so it has been opened up to families and friends. You lot are friends.)

Elegran Wed 20-Nov-13 20:18:41

Thanks everyone.
I think all those who offered to talk are now organised, plus a couple of non-gransnet ones (beavers and Scottish family tree searching) which I hope will be as interesting to you all as they were to me.

I have roughed out a programme to include all that and still leave time for chatting.

I have checked about vegetarian alternatives in the lunch, printed out info sheets and so on.

I have made sure there will be a projector and screen to see all the pictures in the talks. However I have found out that they do not have one of those red laser things for pointing things out on the picture, so if anybody has one they could bring, it would be appreciated. If not, I shall go along to PC World or Shapes and buy one. They are probably only pennies.

What have I forgotten? Tell me now before it is too late.

glassortwo Wed 20-Nov-13 20:14:42
