Testing the water for a "Northern mini-national"

There was talk of a National meetup a little while ago, but nothing concrete seems to have happened about it. There was a lot of general interest then, but how many people are still interested and would come to an all-day meeting in Edinburgh in November/December? If there are enough to make it worth the effort of organising it, I shall make a detailed plan and agenda and take serious names.

Central Edinburgh is a magical place around Christmas, so a meeting at a date from the end of November would be good (St Andrews Day is the 30th November, highly suitable, and the decorations and entertainments in Princes St Gardens open just before that) Time for gift shopping could be built in.

Here is a possible scenario - a meeting room overlooking the castle booked for the day from 9 to 5, with three tea/coffee/cake/biscuit breaks, a buffet lunch, and a couple of talks on relevant subjects, plus time for limitless socialising and retail therapy on Princes St. This would cost, at a very vague reckoning, about £25 a head plus £7.50 each for lunch. A bit of negotiation might bring it down, but that is a conjecture, so is a spot of fundraising of some kind to offset the cost. (GN have indicated that they are not able to offer any funding) Other places might be cheaper or dearer, but this is somewhere that we know does a good lunch and afternoon tea and has a nice atmosphere. There is a lift. There would be room for up to 40.

There are usually travel deals on at that time of year. There are a lot of hotels/B&Bs etc in Edinburgh, (lists are available from the information centre), and we might get a bulk rate if several people want to stay over in the the same place.

I don't know yet whether this will be viable, so there is no guarantee that it will happen, but it could be a very enjoyable day. If you are interested enough to be counted in provisionally, please pm me.

Well done, elegran! sunshine

Elegran Wed 20-Nov-13 12:13:29

Result! I have just had an email confirming that someone from the Scottish Beaver Trial will come and talk to us about it on 1st December. This was the subject of a talk at my adult class at the zoo on a week ago, and I thought it so interesting that I nobbled the speaker and asked whether it was possible.

It is all coming together.

I am so glad you are getting somewhere,Nellie

I think I have been lucky - on Saturday I was typing with my left hand only. Tonight my right hand is joining in a little without being too painful. I can use the thumb and forefinger of that hand to steady things, not to take wieght, but even that little bit of twohandedness helps a bit.

Nelliemoser Tue 19-Nov-13 18:52:43

Elegran I am the same with an empty sleeve at present with my shoulder drafty coat front.

I have finally mastered putting the coat over my bad shoulder first and holding it there before getting other arm in the left sleeve. I can just do up some of the press studs at the front.
Apart from not being able to move right arm enough to safely drive myself the ultimate indignity is having to ask someone else to fasten and unfasten my seat belt for me. After 4 weeks I now feel my shoulder is hurting less and is more mobile.

Elegran Tue 19-Nov-13 18:27:25

I solved the bra problem for the first night by not taking it off (or much else) when I got home from A & E. There was hardly any night left anyway. Then I took it off and left it off for three days. Big T-shirts and loose shirts and a cardigan slung over my shoulders was OK.

Meanwhile my hand became less swollen, and my shoulder was OK with a little movement, so this morning I could return to my usual system of wrapping it round my waist and fastening it in front, then wriggling it round and putting my arms in. Sore arm first, slowly, then the other one. I could even put on a reasonably sized T-shirt, if I eased in the sore arm first, then the head, then the good arm.

I still can't wear a jacket properly because of the sling, so went out today with one sleeve hanging loose and the zip undone. Not too warm in a nippy wind.

Nelliemoser Tue 19-Nov-13 17:52:12

Elegran. I have just caught up with this.

Ouch I hope you feel better soon. wine or such like should help.

Have you tried doing your bra up first and pulling it on over your feet and wriggling it into place with your left arm? This is probably more difficult with broken fingers though.

Elegran Tue 19-Nov-13 16:50:48

At least the drunks did not start to arrive until after 11, and none of them were obstreperous.

Lona Tue 19-Nov-13 16:36:29

Elegran sympathies, I've been there too (A&E) My dd and I decided we could organise it much better!
Hope you recover quickly as it sounds like a wickedly noisy get-together!

glassortwo Tue 19-Nov-13 12:57:27

Tegan Mon 18-Nov-13 12:03:16

The S.O. has got all the times for me. I'm sure there won't be a problem but it's nice to have a Plan B. Not up till Sunday though as it's the Bamburgh Lights switch on on Saturday night [Brendan Foster is doing it].

Elegran Mon 18-Nov-13 11:50:55

Tegan You would be welcome. Have you sussed out buses yet? If you are here Saturday night you could join the revellers and take a key to get in - as I said I am not planning to join them that night.

Tegan Mon 18-Nov-13 11:42:17

Elegran; I'd like to take you up on that as a back up in case there's a problem with the bus service. I'm sure there won't be though. Re serum; cut the tube open and then cling film it..that's what I do when I'm down to the last drop [although not sure how to do it with one hand confused].

Elegran Mon 18-Nov-13 11:23:27

I wil repeat my offer of a bed if anyone needs it. Spare room is sinking under Various Stuff but bed is accessible. Also couch in study.

Elegran Mon 18-Nov-13 11:20:43

Soounds as though you are all getting organised for a riotous weekend!
I am saving myself for Sunday, I thnk an early night Saturday as I am not sleeping too well.

I will join Galen for a meal Sunday night, but don't know where yet.

hummingbird my daughter has washed my hair for me this morning. I feel so glamorous now. Very glad it is short so just needs a brush pulled through it. Squeezing the tubes of No 7 trial stuff with one hand is tricky but I am determined to get the last drops out. I need all the beauty help I can get.

glassortwo Mon 18-Nov-13 07:53:12

marelli we could top and tail if you dont mind sleeping with my toes in your face grin

hummingbird Sun 17-Nov-13 23:05:40

Just caught up with this thread. Poor you, Elegran, that sounds really painful! I had a hand injury once, which left me single-handed for six weeks. It was horrible, particularly managing the hair!

Your meet-up sounds wonderful, ladies, wish I could join you! Enjoy! flowers
