Testing the water for a "Northern mini-national"

There was talk of a National meetup a little while ago, but nothing concrete seems to have happened about it. There was a lot of general interest then, but how many people are still interested and would come to an all-day meeting in Edinburgh in November/December? If there are enough to make it worth the effort of organising it, I shall make a detailed plan and agenda and take serious names.

Central Edinburgh is a magical place around Christmas, so a meeting at a date from the end of November would be good (St Andrews Day is the 30th November, highly suitable, and the decorations and entertainments in Princes St Gardens open just before that) Time for gift shopping could be built in.

Here is a possible scenario - a meeting room overlooking the castle booked for the day from 9 to 5, with three tea/coffee/cake/biscuit breaks, a buffet lunch, and a couple of talks on relevant subjects, plus time for limitless socialising and retail therapy on Princes St. This would cost, at a very vague reckoning, about £25 a head plus £7.50 each for lunch. A bit of negotiation might bring it down, but that is a conjecture, so is a spot of fundraising of some kind to offset the cost. (GN have indicated that they are not able to offer any funding) Other places might be cheaper or dearer, but this is somewhere that we know does a good lunch and afternoon tea and has a nice atmosphere. There is a lift. There would be room for up to 40.

There are usually travel deals on at that time of year. There are a lot of hotels/B&Bs etc in Edinburgh, (lists are available from the information centre), and we might get a bulk rate if several people want to stay over in the the same place.

I don't know yet whether this will be viable, so there is no guarantee that it will happen, but it could be a very enjoyable day. If you are interested enough to be counted in provisionally, please pm me.

I'd have to get 'digs' for the night.....! Elizabeth1 and I went to The Rosehip for lunch on the day that we were meeting with Elegran, baubles, Bags and grannygreyhips for tea at the National Gallery! We ate far too much lunch and couldn't manage the tea....blush! Unusual for us both, as we have very healthy appetites grin!

glassortwo Sun 17-Nov-13 21:44:51

Marelli you could come and join us. wink

Marelli Sun 17-Nov-13 21:33:31

Love The Rosehip! Lovely staff, good food, and a great selection of whiskies, should one feel so inclined! The disabled loo is spacious and not far to walk to across the restaurant. smile

Galen Sun 17-Nov-13 21:22:20

I have had this reply from The Rosehip

Hello there. We have a disabled ramp and disabled toilet all on the same ground floor. Please just advise when booking that you require to be seated in the downstairs disabled friendly area and we will be delighted to help.
With best wishes,
Rupert.

baubles Sun 17-Nov-13 19:05:04

Oh Elegran what a horrible thing to happen, I hope you heal quickly. Have more flowers

Galen Sun 17-Nov-13 18:17:41

Of course there is a GN anthem

It's the suffragettes march!grin

Shout, shout, up with your song
Swing ye along for the dawn is breaking
March, March, etc ----------

Elegran Sun 17-Nov-13 17:53:25

No pain if I keep quite stil, Pittcity but it does squeak and wake me up if I move a little in my sleep.

The finger and hand are already less swollen than they were to start with, and the purple is fading into more subtle hues. My shoulder looks exactly as it has always looked. The wrenched muscles and ligaments are alll hidden under a good layer of padding.

Pittcity Sun 17-Nov-13 16:59:31

Hoping you are not in too much pain Elegran.
Did I see the words song sheets in your earlier post? If I did then you will know pain with my awful singing!
Is there a gransnet anthem?

Elegran Sat 16-Nov-13 22:54:23

This was more than a hair, it was a chunk of cast iron.

Thanks Moomin If I sit about unmoving it does not hurt. But how much of the time is that possible?

moomin Sat 16-Nov-13 20:41:33

Just caught up with t'internet today - what awful luck Elegran, hope you are coping OK one-handed and you are not in too much pain flowers

Galen Sat 16-Nov-13 19:53:03

As someone who can trip over a human hair :-

Elegran Sat 16-Nov-13 19:35:39

Someone once remarked that this is a first world country with third world roads. Our pavements are fourth world at least.

Galen Sat 16-Nov-13 19:09:32

Ah we have magic yellow lines instead. They paint them round hazards and hope the magic will magic them awayconfused

Elegran Sat 16-Nov-13 19:07:34

The normal reaction of our concil to reports is to reply thanking you and saying that something will be done immediately. A team goes out and places a traffic cone at the hazard, then nothing more happens.

harrigran Sat 16-Nov-13 18:46:48

You must report manhole cover even if you don't want to make a claim, someone else will fall if it is not corrected.

gillybob Sat 16-Nov-13 18:26:33

Oh poor you Elegran . I was thinking the same as Galen never mind the floppy boobies, can you lift a glass okay? grin

Elegran Sat 16-Nov-13 16:28:04

Thanks glass

Tegan I certainly intend to report that hazard. Will think about claiming, but it could be too much hassle.

Tegan Sat 16-Nov-13 16:22:54

Should you get a photo of the man hole cover and make a claim against the council?

glassortwo Sat 16-Nov-13 16:18:33

elegran ouch, you will be aching in places you hadnt realised you had hurt.
Yes let us know if we can help with anything. Right off to look at restaurants.

Elegran Sat 16-Nov-13 16:11:14

Just come back to thread after DD and SiL have been in with picnic lunch and help with various things. As they got into car they met Him Next Door and have passed on the news. He has mimed drinking and falling over to me through the window but I assure you I was stone cold sober, more than can be said for several customers at A&E last night. Tonight will be different. I shall have a drop to help me sleep.

Galen I have found that I can do a lot of things left-handed so drinking should be a doddle. What is two? I must be thick today

Marelli Friday night in A&E quite peaceful until 11.30 then a chap supported between two pals, side of face all grazed. They propped him into chair then went over to reception to book him in. Then one came back to ask "Jeff, what is your surname?. After that, several groups the worse for wear. No-one obstreperous. Yes, can type left hand but slowly.

Ya Ya Jen Glad my hair is short, will wash it in shower if I can manage shower.

Bra - I already put it on like that. It is the one-handed bit that will be tricky. Slept in it last night to avoid the problem, but can't keep doing that.

G23 Thank you. When my brain is functioning better I shall see what can be passed to anyone else to do. Fairly well organised, just timings, balance of money, finalising and printing some song sheets and game sheets, and finding another talk plus a spare in case of disaster. No-one said how long in the sling. Think I will look online for info.

Why do things always happen at the most inconvenient times?

annodomini Sat 16-Nov-13 15:47:45

Ouch, ouch! elegran. I still have to fasten my bra in front and drag it round, since both shoulders are arthritic. I have tried front-fastening bras but they turned out not to give much support. Take it easy and do what you're told and let's hope you heal quickly.

Granny23 Sat 16-Nov-13 15:23:11

Commiserations! Try www.needundies.com/front-fastening-bras.html for bras to suit - they even have ones that close with poppers. M & S, Damart etc. also have front closing bras.

How long are you liable to be still in the sling? Anything we can do to help with preparations for the meet-up?

Galen Sat 16-Nov-13 15:11:23

Most important, can you drink left handedwine?
