Burns Night

Nothing yet planned in Edinburgh for January but here are a couple of suggestions:-

1) A repeat of our DIY Burns lunch chez Elegran, which seemed to go down well.

2) A Burns supper out, for instance at Tthe Scottish Restaurant and Cafe at the Gallery at the mound where we have met before, complete with ceilidh. Or somewhere similar.

3) Burns Supper at ROSL (another familiar place to meet) This one has some bigwigs and toasts "After a welcome drink, tuck into the traditional three-course meal, including wine and a glass of whisky, with the Immortal Memory proposed by Rt Rev Brian Smith, former Bishop of Edinburgh. The Toast to the Lassies will be given by the Consul General of Ireland, Pat Bourne, and the reply by Consul General of the USA, Zoja D Bazarnic. "

Shall be thinking of you all tomorrow - - DH and I shall have our mini Burns night. I'll have a wee usquebaugh and DH might be bousing at the nappy!

Marelli Tue 20-Jan-15 18:59:38

I did suggest papaoscar join us, anno, but I don't think he thought I was serious wink!

annodomini Tue 20-Jan-15 18:38:58

Now, who's going to give the toast 'to the lassies'?

Elegran Tue 20-Jan-15 18:05:44

From memory it was 20 minutes. I have just done an internet search, and there are a couple of places that say 25 minutes, so I shall do that.

There is also an account from someone who tried doing the same with a small turnip instead of a big swede. Spectacularly unsuccessful. isisjem.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/how-not-to-cook-turnip.html

Take note - this works with a big northern swede, not a dainty little Southron turnip. Scoop it out and mash it with lots of butter and salt and pepper.

Elegran Tue 20-Jan-15 17:56:40

Can anyone who was there last time remember how long the whole swedes/turnips got in the microwave? It was a brilliant way to cook them - no peeling and chopping, just scoop out and mash.

baubles Tue 06-Jan-15 19:06:30

What can I bring Elegran?

Elegran Tue 06-Jan-15 18:53:08

That's a shame, besottedgran We will think of you!

Best wishes for the op.

besottedgran Tue 06-Jan-15 18:32:13

Hi, Elegran had appt today in Edinburgh and my op date is Thursday 22nd January so wouldn't really be feasible for me to come to Burns night.

Am so disappointed ---- I love all the traditions and fun of the evening. Have always loved Burns' poems thanks to the influence and enthusiasm of my much missed dad.

You'll all have a great time I'm sure----have a wee dram for me*

Elegran Wed 31-Dec-14 13:47:43

I didn't complain about eating cheese for weeks, Elizabeth1 It was rather nice to just open the freezer to choose the next - they were all delicious.
numberplease Sorry you don't think you will make it. Maybe next time?
Jane10 I will cogitate and pm you.

I'm looking forward to this - should be fun, though it does mean that I shall have to clear all the junk with has already started to accumulate since Christmas Day . Are we going to have readings and toasts again? if so,take one step forward all volunteers.

Jane10 Wed 31-Dec-14 11:00:33

Let me know what you`d like me to bring Elegran. I`m not one of life`s cooks or bakers I`m afraid but I`d have a go if you`re brave enough. Otherwise I could bring the Fizz (alcoholic fizz not personality!!).
Will you PM with the address for this extravaganza? Or will you just keep posting tantalisingly. Just had a thought- it could be a "virtual" Burns lunch. A bit like Terry Wogan`s famous radio firework display which we all enjoyed so much!

Elizabeth1 Wed 31-Dec-14 09:38:38

Not just cottage cheese elegran other kinds as well and I'm refusing to leave early without tasting every one of them. You were left eating cheese for a few weeks/months afterwards - that blinking snow eh. Can't wait to see the neep being microwaved in its skin. Bags I get to scoop it out. Not you thatbags wink

numberplease Tue 30-Dec-14 21:16:26

I`m definitely tempted Marelli, but am afraid it`s just not possible. I probably wouldn`t be able to give the haggis the respect and admiration it undoubtedly deserves anyway. I hope you all have as brilliant a night as you seemed to have last year.

Elizabeth1 Tue 30-Dec-14 19:02:44

I have room for 3 others in my car and would be delighted to give a lift in to the brave elegrans home, trifle and all. tchsmile Think we'll keep the roof on though. wink

Marelli Tue 30-Dec-14 16:33:11

Hope you can make it, Besotted! I've tried to tempt numberplease as well (she could stay with me), but doubt if she'll manage up. It's a long way from Lincolnshire. sad

besottedgran Tue 30-Dec-14 09:10:23

Thank you for thinking of me re lift, Marelli but hope to make arrangements with DD1 about staying overnight with her (near Tollcross).

Oh, Elegran thank you for organising this - SO hope I can be there!

Elegran Mon 29-Dec-14 19:27:12

I do hope you can,marmight
