Nothing yet planned in Edinburgh for January but here are a couple of suggestions:-

1) A repeat of our DIY Burns lunch chez Elegran, which seemed to go down well.

2) A Burns supper out, for instance at Tthe Scottish Restaurant and Cafe at the Gallery at the mound where we have met before, complete with ceilidh. Or somewhere similar.

3) Burns Supper at ROSL (another familiar place to meet) This one has some bigwigs and toasts "After a welcome drink, tuck into the traditional three-course meal, including wine and a glass of whisky, with the Immortal Memory proposed by Rt Rev Brian Smith, former Bishop of Edinburgh. The Toast to the Lassies will be given by the Consul General of Ireland, Pat Bourne, and the reply by Consul General of the USA, Zoja D Bazarnic. "

Went home from a lovely Burns afternoon with great friends. The meal was delicious and I still cannot get over the creamy mashed potatoes Elegran. Was overly tired yesterday and went home into a hot bath followed by a cosy bed. Slept like a log and woke up far too soon. Could eat another meal now that I've recovered from tiredness. Thanks again all for the lovely stories, good company and an especially great hostess smile

Great afternoon and lovely to meet up with old friends again. Thank you Elegran for your hospitality.

Air Vice Marshal's Pud for Bags

1 large carton of Double cream
1 large carton of Plain Yoghurt
Raspberries/Blueberries
Dark Muscovado Sugar

Put fruit in glass dish. Whip cream until it holds it's shape, fold in yog and scoop over fruit. Shake copious amounts of sugar on the top. Cover with cling film and put in fridge for 24 hours. Serve. Simples. Halve amounts for fewer portions. Sometimes I fold in crushed meringues.

Didn't get round to minesad
Will probably have it next week. I don't like the the McSweens! Used to have ones my brother brought down from his local butcher. Now, I like the ones from the haggis company.

Mr Bags hasn't eaten his leftovers as he's really under the weather with his cold. The leftovers will warm up nicely tomorrow and if he doesn't want them I shall enjoy them myself.

marmight, that pud was just sooooooper! I must make it. Is it really as simple as you said? Double cream, I presume? Any special natural yogurt or will anything do?
Just post the recipe in the recipes section, wouldya? smile [slurp]

Well.....it was that sort of afternoon.....grin!

Elegran Sun 25-Jan-15 21:04:40

The droopy bits are even more pronounced now. (wait for the replies to that)

Marelli Sun 25-Jan-15 20:57:29

grin! And we even did a bit of picture-hanging, too!

Elegran Sun 25-Jan-15 20:54:27

Lunch works well because everyone can get home at a reasonable time, and it can be less formal (don't think anything could be less formal than our efforts)

Elegran Sun 25-Jan-15 20:52:54

We''ll hold you to that Anno Put it in the diary to start thinking about after next Christmas!

Interesting that this year's haggis was exceptionally tasty. MacSween don't make the haggis-shaped ones any more, they now sell tubular ones that look like giant sausages, so we had a chieftain . MacSween could lose their place as market leader at this rate (but it could just have been good because it was in the oven longer than it should have been)

Did Mr Bags enjoy his leftovers?

Thank you again from me too, elegran, for you wonderful hospitality. It was great to see people and chat.

I was also with you in spirit, although the spirit was not whisky which I blushingly admit I dislike intensely. Pleased to hear that you all had a wonderful time. I haven't spotted any haggis (which I do like) grazing the green pastures of the South Island so I have foregone a Burn's Night celebration this year.

annodomini Sun 25-Jan-15 20:30:40

I think that next year we should have a Burns lunch/supper south of the Border. Would someone please remind me when the time comes?

baubles Sun 25-Jan-15 20:25:47

glassortwo Sun 25-Jan-15 19:09:32

I have been with you all in spirit today, I knew you all would have a great time. smile

Marelli Sun 25-Jan-15 19:07:30

Thank you so much for having us, Elegran flowers. It's so good to get together again with these lovely people! smile x

Elegran Sun 25-Jan-15 18:21:07

My thanks to all of you for coming, you made it a great day. The glasses have been washed and are drip-drying, the second load of dishes is in the dishwasher and I am sitting down at the computer to see what has been happening on Gransnet in my absence.

Jane10 Sun 25-Jan-15 16:48:02

Well it was great. Good food and good company -in fact it's still going on! I had to leave at 4 so it was a looooong lunch! baubles addressed the haggis, marelli did the toast to the lassies and hostess Elegran toasted the immortal memory. Grans slaved in the kitchen to produce the haggis neeps and tatties. Fabulous puds courtesy of marmight and marelli. Sigh. Replete. Burp emoticon!

Katek Sun 25-Jan-15 15:42:29

There is always next year . . .

Katek Sat 24-Jan-15 16:56:14

Wish I could have come Elegran but it's a long way from North Aberdeenshire! Hope you all have a wonderful lunch-I shall think of you when I'm sitting down with MacSween's veggie option!

Galen Sat 24-Jan-15 14:39:18

I've got mine and the swede. Looking forward to it.

Elegran Sat 24-Jan-15 14:36:57

And do follow the link on that page to the article on "The use
of ultrasonography in the reproductive management of this species."

Note - No haggii were harmed during this study. Hagglet 9 has been
rehomed to a little old lady in Plockton who has called him Hamish,
and he is living happily on a diet of hand-picked heather and Old Pulteney.
