April in Edinburgh

A month or so ago we were remembering the big all-day meetup we had in Edinburgh two years ago and there was enthusiasm for doing it again.

Ok - time to get down to some serious planning if it is all to be organised in time foir a Spring Spectacular in April. I shall try to pm everyone who was interested when it was first mentioned, but I hope that there will be others. Last time we had people from the other end of the country, and it was great to see everyone.

Dates first - can I ask you for an idea of when in April you can and particularly when you CANT make it so that I can see what date would suit most people. Is the weekend or a weekday better? Sunday travelling proved tricky last time, but weekdays are not convenient if you are working. There are plenty of places to stay here for anyone who wants to make a city break of it (other halves can join us for lunch if they like)

Venue probably the ROSL www.rosl-edinburgh.org/ subject to availability on our chosen date.

Next - what kind of programme would you like? Last time we had a really good talk about the beaver re-introduction trial (still no decision by Scottish executive on whether that re-introduction is to be made permanent!) and an exhilarating dicsussion on the Scottish Independence referendum, with some Scottish songs to finish. There were other things in reserve, but time ran out. There was coffee and biscuits, and a sit-down lunch.

Here is my list of those who will be there. If I have missed you out, or added you by mistake, do correct me. There are places for more - up to 40! I shall be asking for money in the middle of March, but if you want to give it to me earlier I won't refuse it - PM me to ask where to send a cheque, or to get a bank reference for an online transfer.

Thatbags Thanks for replying to gaga1949 and Cinders123. I have been out and have only just got back to the computer for a quick check before bed. I shall PM them - but you have told them everything they need to know.

As well as the old familiar faces. grin

baubles Fri 05-Feb-16 22:03:04

Wow! How lovely it will be to meet so many new people. So looking forward to it.

elegran will check this thread tomorrow if not before and will add you names to the list. Then she's going to set up a payment system for everyone, but there's plenty of time for that.

Here's a copy of a message from elegran explaining details:

After a series of emails to and from the ROSL I have clarified the price structure, and worked out that there is no difference between pricing the things we want and adding them together, and just accepting their "delegate rate" per person, so that is what we will do.

The bad news is that it has gone up since we last did this. It will be £30 per person. For that we do get a great deal:-

Coffee and cake in the morning
Two course sit-down lunch
Coffee and cake in the afternoon
Water and cordials on the tables
Use of a room to ourselves from 10am to 5pm
Hire of a projector and screen (I am now looking for a free speaker for a short talk on an interesting subject. Suggestions welcomed)

Wine at lunch will be up to individuals to order and pay for, and there is a bar just along the corridor, where anyone wanting something stronger than water or cordials throughout the day can buy drinks.

Thanks thatbags I just went back a few posts and realised it was April 15th -will check work diary tomorrow to see if I can free up that day - how do I sign up?

thatbags Fri 05-Feb-16 21:33:44

Hi cinders! The date we've fixed on is Friday 15 April. Hope you can make it.

thatbags Fri 05-Feb-16 21:32:24

elegran will be in touch very soon with all the details, gaga1949. It's great that so many new posters want to come. See you there!

Cinders123 Fri 05-Feb-16 21:32:04

Count me in weekend better but can make weekdays - last weekend April no good

gaga1949 Fri 05-Feb-16 21:22:13

Hi there this is my very first time posting on Gransnet. I would like to come along to the lunch day in April very much. Can anyone tell me how to go about signing up on the list? Thank you

Elegran Fri 05-Feb-16 20:00:30

If anyone else is thinking of staying at the ROSL, it would be a good plan to book soon - there is a big AGM on there at the same time as our thing, and some of them may have the same idea.

Pittcity Fri 05-Feb-16 18:23:46

I am hoping to be staying in Edinburgh on theThursday and Friday nights. Anyone else making a mini break of it?

Pittcity Fri 05-Feb-16 18:20:37

Or start a new thread suggesting a time and place to suit you DYO

Elegran Fri 05-Feb-16 17:18:15

Have you seen the thread about a big meet-up in London, DYO ?

DeeWhyO Fri 05-Feb-16 17:01:16

Would be great to meet up with other Gransnetters but Scotland is rather a long way away....

tubbygran Fri 05-Feb-16 14:43:30

I live near Edinburgh and am happy to help too.

hildajenniJ Fri 05-Feb-16 14:36:26

Looking forward to this. I only hope that the railway bridge is rebuilt by then so that I can come by train. If I have to use the bus, I think it will be too inconvenient. They say that they hope to have rail services running by the beginning of March. Here's hoping!

tubbygran Fri 05-Feb-16 14:36:24

Thanks Elegran, I would appreciate your PM.

tubbygran Fri 05-Feb-16 14:35:18

Friday 15 April is good for me. I have made a note in my diary, so please count me as a definite!

Elegran Fri 05-Feb-16 14:34:09

Shall I PM you too, tubbygran and pencil you in?

tubbygran Fri 05-Feb-16 14:30:03

How exciting! I would love to meet everyone. No date is impossible at present and I am very happy to 'go with the flow' with regard to venue/ activities/ discussions etc. Can't wait, thank you Elegran.smile

Elegran Fri 05-Feb-16 13:57:07

Yes, josephine257 Well, more of a daylong food-and-chat-fest with a couple of breaks for entertainment to rest digestive systems and vocal cords. Are you interested? I can PM you more details.
