Hi any Gransnetters around Nottingham who'd like to meet?

NotSpaghetti Thu 28-Nov-19 09:27:30

Mardy is used in Lancashire too.

Willynilly Thu 28-Nov-19 09:20:32

"She isn't in" (sh'intin). Lots of examples like this as we tend to run words into each other.
Stands need is used disparagingly when a person does something they really shouldn't be doing, usually out of their earshot!

mazgoli Thu 28-Nov-19 08:48:38

Neither of those! And I've been here 25 years!

Willynilly Thu 28-Nov-19 07:48:01

Mazgoli have you come across "stands need" yet? Or heard "sh'intin". smile

mazgoli Thu 28-Nov-19 07:36:23

'Mardy' was new to me when I moved here from Exeter, as was 'mithering'.

kittylester Wed 27-Nov-19 08:12:54

I said it on the phone to a young man in Bexhill on Sea who asked what it meant- I was stumped - it means mardy!!

dragonfly46 Wed 27-Nov-19 07:56:45

We used mardy in Yorkshire!

Willynilly Wed 27-Nov-19 07:52:51

It was tongue in cheek SalsaQueen, I was born in Ruddington and I don't speak like that either but I do use some of the colloquialisms.

Kittylester mardy is a great word imo as are some of the other Midlands words/sayings and well worth keeping alive. smile

kittylester Wed 27-Nov-19 07:25:30

We pass through Ruddington every time we go to Nottingham. DH and DS are Forest Supporters so pass through regularly!

Mardy is a fabulous word!! Really descriptive! We used it in Derbyshire, where I grew up, and it is commonplace in Leicestershire where I have lived for 50 years.

SalsaQueen Tue 26-Nov-19 22:17:40

Willynilly I've always lived in Nottingham (born and bred) but have never spoken like that grin. I loathe the word "mardy" as well - it's a made-up word, I think.

Marelli Tue 26-Nov-19 12:28:01

Willynilly, I used to play at the Elms Park rec. ?
DH and I are coming down in the Spring for a wee nostalgic visit for me as it's going to be my 70th. I'm on the Rudd Facebook site, and I see how many changes there have been - as you said to Mazgoli, it looks far too overpopulated now.

Willynilly Tue 26-Nov-19 11:28:08

Marelli which rec did you live near when you were growing up?

It used to be Mazgoli but way too overpopulated now.

mazgoli Tue 26-Nov-19 10:07:37

14th January works for me. All the best to your husband, hope all goes well.

HappyAmI Tue 26-Nov-19 09:43:34

Hi all, sorry only just seen all these messages, for some reasons my notifications are not coming through.

I can't do this week, away from tomorrow till Saturday and working today. Next week my husband is having surgery (already postponed twice by QMC) so I think I may have to leave meeting till January.

Does the afternoon of 14 January suit you all? In Rudd or city centre?

mazgoli Mon 25-Nov-19 22:00:23

Wow! You moved a long way away. Ruddington's lovely.

Marelli Mon 25-Nov-19 21:53:38

I'm in Fife, Mazgoli, but was born in Ruddington. We moved to Scotland when I was 10. ?

mazgoli Mon 25-Nov-19 21:47:08

This is great! I've only lived here for 25 years, am from The West Country myself. Where do you live now Marelli?

Willynilly Mon 25-Nov-19 20:04:30

My pleasure....me duck

Marelli Mon 25-Nov-19 19:20:16

Ah, Willynilly, that was music to my ears! ?

Willynilly Mon 25-Nov-19 17:09:25

Unfortunately not Kittylester.

Bur am not being a mardy bogger, I just can't gerrin t' taahn. grin wink

kittylester Mon 25-Nov-19 16:46:09

Apparently, marelli, they only roar when a virgin passes by.grin

I used to meet boyfriends there years ago and was embarrassed that they didnt roar for me.

Marelli Mon 25-Nov-19 16:43:15

This my hometown - left there so very many years ago. A very popular meeting place was 'the lions', outside what is known as the Council Houses.

kittylester Mon 25-Nov-19 16:17:34

Wonder if they will roar?

mazgoli Mon 25-Nov-19 16:06:22

Good call, are you joining us Willynilly?

Willynilly Mon 25-Nov-19 14:49:33

Shouldn't you be meeting by the lions? grin
