Oh wise women of GN I haven’t had a period now for a whole year - YAY ?

My question is can I be certain that I can not get pregnant ? ? Also is that it now, am I classed as having come through the menopause or is there more delights to come?

Any experiences you can share would be really helpful,

You should carry on using contraception for a year after your last period if you are over 50 and 2 years after your last period if you are under 50.

Check with your doctor... they can run a test to check your hormone levels to be sure.

No hormone test currently carried out (ie FSH or estradiol) can determine whether you have actually reached menopause so the advice given by mumofmadboys is the one to go on....

Usually a lack of menses for one year is considered to be definitive as menopause.

I agree that it would be worthwhile having your hormone levels tested if you are concerned about pregnancy.

PSA: menopause is NOT protective against STIs. Sadly, there is an increasing incidence of STIs among older adults, possibly because they may believe that they are too old to run into "problems". In fact, older women may be MORE likely to contract STIs if exposed to an infected partner because the vaginal pH changes as a result of aging.
