Where have my lips gone?

I am 67. Late menopause. Hysterectomy three years ago. Now I am beginning to look like someone who has taken their false teeth out! Lipstick (which I rarely wear) accentuates this. Genetics are probably part of this because so did my mother. However she didn’t have any teeth. (The dentist who advised that should have been burned in oil). Totally against any invasive treatment. Any ideas?

I was blessed with, what my mother used to call my 'luscious lips'. At school others were cruel calling me 'rubber lips' and Mick Jagger and I agonised, as young children do, when subjected to relentless teasing.

However, at the grand old age of 67, who's laughing now! No sign of these lips diminishing I'm pleased to say.

Whatever you do, don't go without your lipstick. I see people on tv with masses of eye make and no lipstick and it's very ageing. Always wear lipstick and try to do as you have been advised by the lovely people on gransnet. Better to have some lips than nothing at all which it appears to be when you don't wear lipstick at all.
I don't come downstairs without lipstick and eyebrow pencil so I look a little bit reasonable, even if just to myself.

Never had lips to speak of.... so haven’t noticed them getting thinner.... come to think of it I’ve never had much of a bum.....which now my friends envy me for...as they spread out of control in the rear!! My daughter bemoans her lack of bum now ( and blames my genes) but lives her plump lips ( dads genes)...told her...life ain’t perfect.

Something in a book I read, "....as thin as an old woman's lips.." Mine too, very depressing. Author could have thought of something else if he'd (would have been a he) tried.

There was an 'older' lady at work who (unfortunately) had thin lips, sunken eyes, no brows and a skull-like face.

Age and/or heredity had been very unkind to her.

She wore orange lipstick, pencilled semi-circular brow lines and 'finished' her look with bright blue eyeshadow. Result? The 'scary clown'!

My lips have gone very thin. I am almost 70. If I am going somewhere Inwant to look as best as possible, I use a lip brush and lipstick. Keep,it minimal. Somehow using the brush helps to look natural

Hi, what a joy you lot are! Loved reading the posts.
Post menopausal too and hypothyroid for 20+ years. Still got eyebrows which will occasionally sprout extremely long white hair or two! Where did they come from? I know where they go. A x5 mirror helps.
Facial exercises helps definition. Do them whilst driving and enjoy the looks from other drivers and passers by. Our face, is full of muscle. I’m quite defined underneath this fat, but that’s another issue??

@Framilode

My eyebrows fell out some time before I turned 60 so for my 60th birthday I got them tattooed back in. I didn't want to end up looking like Groucho Marx the way young women do nowadays so I took some trouble and found an eyebrow specialist who basically does nothing else. She very lightly tattooed very fine lines back in and I looked suddenly ten years younger. Went back a few weeks later for retouch and expect to have to do it again in a year or so. Google Microblading.
My family were all amazed because only after the treatment did they realise how much older I'd looked with no eyebrows.
(The first week or two I did look like Groucho Marx but that' was only because of the scabs)

I also lost a lot of plumpness from my lips after menopause . But have taken the plunge and had a little filler . I found a great girl through recommendation and all she has done is make them more like they used to be. Am very happy and will go again when it dissolves away. I also had my non existent eyebrows microbladed ( same girl) and very pleased to have them back. None of this looks crazy obvious . Just a little more like ‘me’ . A little self indulgence goes a long way .

How’s about a free makeup makeover with a sympathetic makeup house Clarins, Lauder, No7 I did just that recently took 10 years off me, less is more. Funny attempting to get it right as I dodge between perching glasses up and down nose. I think one of the best things an older woman can do is be aware of clothing. A skirt doesn’t cost more than trousers and always looks well turned out. Am very aware of my three little granddaughters and how I would like, in part for them to remember me

I've found that a Matt lipstick is good using a brush to apply it gives a fuller look. Try a warm colour but nothing darker than your natural lip tone. Also use a lot of lip balm at bedtime and apply this regularly to keep natural moisture in.

My lips are thinner than they used to be but still have some volume.
I use Eluzabeth Arden eight hour cream overnight, it's too thick and greasy for daywear, it keeps them moisturised.
I always wear lipstick, it stops them disappearing.
Current favourite is NYX lipstick in LaLa No 612 a beige rose colour. I do outline with a pencil L'Oreal Bois de Rose but keep the line just on the natural lip line.
Other than that there's nothing we can do unless you go for fillers, which I don't.
By the way, my dentist is offering this service now!

I too am 67 and post-menopausal. As a girl, I had lovely full lips - my mother used to kiss me and call me 'luscious lips!', my lips have thinned considerably, but I outline with one colour of a lip-stain pen, then fill in with, another colour - and reds rather than anything pale. A touch of gloss makes them look fuller too.
I have also lost the long thick lashes I used to have - what I'm left with is far too short to apply mascara to - any advice there to emphasize eyes without it, or eyeliner, as I just finish up poking myself in the eye with that!

My lips are not thin but I have a multitude of fine lines on the top and a few scars from an accident I had falling under my horse on a gravel road when I was sixteen . So I have to paint on lipstick (max Factor usually) and cover with gloss. Otherwise an ordinary lipstick bleeds into these lines and I look like a vampire! Trying an ordinary lipstick and chancing it without looking in the mirror has caused shock results! !

I have never been any good with applying lipstick so when I worked years ago I used a very subtle shade. Then stopped altogether.

Due to thyroid I lost the outside of my eyebrows. A month ago on impulse I approached Benefit in a local store. Best move ever and really helpful young women.
I asked about my lips and bought lip stain. It's easy to dab a little on and just gives a lift.
Their brow pencil works a treat now. I rarely use the brush enhancer. Why didnt I do all this long ago?? I like a natural look and am so pleased
Lip stain is fabulous

While you're looking for your lips, please keep an eye open for my waistline.....!
Agree that the current trend for pouty lips looks horrible though; my mother used to have an allergy to some seafoods & her lips would swell & be really painful, it reminds me of that.

HettyMaud Wed 22-Jan-20 10:33:57

Why not accentuate your eyes instead -perhaps eyeshadow and mascara. Or some beautiful specs. I've always had thin lips and a tiny mouth so don't even attempt to draw attention to my lips other than a bit of lipstick for colour.

f77ms Wed 22-Jan-20 10:28:43

I use o 'keefs lip conditioner, one application lasts all day. Always wear make up when not staying at home all day and lipstick helps to make my lips look fuller. I can't wear red anymore as it makes them look thinner but use a more natural lip colour. It's the only make up I spend money on and usually go for Estee lauder, everything else is the cheaper end.

SheilsM Wed 22-Jan-20 10:27:27

My first post and what a comfort you all are! I have always had thin lips much to my misery, especially these days with “the pouty (spelling?)” fashion now. I certainly wouldn’t want to go this extreme but will be going to Superdrug to look for the recommended productsThanks all x

I think smiling is good! Hopefully people will pick up on your good nature and not bother to try and measure your lips!!
