Any Ladies Here Still On Tablet HRT?

I have tried every type of transdermal HRT after I came off my HRT implant last year and all give me big problems - patches cause severe irritation (all brands), Estrogel is never stable with new pump packs and causes mood swings. Lenzetto just isn't strong enough at even the highest dose.

I only need estrogen and my NHS menopause clinic consultant has given me the green light some months ago to take 1mg Elleste Solo. I have a higher BMI but we discussed risks/benefits and as I've had both ovaries removed she thinks the benefits are far outweighed by the risks.

My GP on the other hand is making a fuss about me using oral and insists I keep trying with transdermals stating that she 'only has a handful of women on tablet form now' (said as if I am somehow a failure).

For the last 2 weeks I've used nothing for HRT and have been in tears as my sweats and joint pains have been so bad. Hubby is very concerned about the effect this is having on me and has offered to go see my GP with me this coming Wednesday as I just don't think I'm being listened to regarding this.

Do any of you ladies here still take tablet HRT, and has your GP tried to force you onto transdermals? I'd be interested to hear your experiences (by the way, I'm 55).

Never allowed to have it due to migraines. I’m sorry for you, is there any other pain relief you can take?

I find it very odd your GP can overrule your consultant. Has the consultant written to your GP asking them to prescribe oral HRT? If not I'd get them to asap, ring the Consultant's secretary through the hospital switchboard. Your husband going with you to see the GP and describing how dreadful your symptoms are may help.
Good luck.

I'm on tablet HRT and always have been, I'm 63. Practice nurse insisted I came off it a few years ago because I had high blood pressure, I struggled dreadfully for at least a year until thankfully my very understanding female GP put me back on it

I have been on tablet HRT for 10 plus years and my doctor is happy for me to continue. I am aware of the risks but the benefits ouway those as far as I am concerned. I am 71.

The consultant's view should come before that of a GP, they are far from menopause experts. I have been on oral HRT since 1992 after an early hysterectomy, coming off makes life intolerable, so I am staying on them for life. Stick to your guns! 💐

Thank you all so much for your incredibly supportive supplies. I feel much more empowered now to face this GP next week. I'll still be taking hubby with me for support even though I feel a bit feeble doing so - he's been so kind and says he won't keep quiet if the GP starts to raise any more objections!

We really don't understand it - I even have a return appointment with the consultant at the menopause clinic in January so it's really not this GP's responsibility!

Just to add in answer to your question, OldFrill - the consultant did indeed write a very detailed letter to my GP prescribing the oral hrt and I know she has received it. I also received a copy so know the contents of the letter. This is what makes this all even more upsetting and frustrating.

I take a HRT tablet daily have done for 13yrs, and always intend go do so. I'm sorry you're having such a rough time , menopause can be brutal. Is it possible to change your GP ?

Please don't feel feeble, it's a very good idea and should be welcomed by your GP - you're both living with the problem.

I have been on Elleste solo for 7 years. GP was reluctant and I tried the gel first. It didn't work for me, and I also had a skin reaction to it.

I am fine on the tablet form and intend to keep taking this. I have been on HRT since I was 4l and am now 77.

I would be quite firm with the doctor.

What does HRT do?

I had tried patches, then gel with progesterone tablets, then back to patches but I didn't absorb at all. Been very happy and settled on the old school Femoston tablets ever since!

Yes, I'm on tablet HRT (have been so for over 20 years now). There's no shame in it. I specifically preferred oral tablets but was given other options. I think it's just because they're worried that some older ladies may forget to take their tablets, but I haven't in 5 years.

@Sar53 I've been taking it for over 20 years (I'm 87 now God bless!) I tried to go off it before, but the symptoms returned, and I prefer the HRT because I have more energy throughout the day.

I am on the HRT Gel but take the progesterone in tablet form. Seems to suit me OK.
