For Newsnight: should we end universal benefits for better off pensioners?

An ally of David Cameron's, Nick Boles, is about to make a speech calling for an end to universal benefits for better-off pensioners - bus passes, winter fuel allowance, free prescriptions - and the money to be spent on childcare.

We may go on Newsnight tonight to talk about this. What do you think? Any examples of how these benefits help or what they mean to people?

What about the quiet place thread, whatever it was called, that was hugely popular?

Anagram Wed 22-Aug-12 17:05:37

I'm sure it's about number 6 by now - I remember it being Vol. 5.

Annobel Wed 22-Aug-12 16:47:46

'Today I've been...' is, I think, into its third edition, having reached 1000 posts on two (or is it more?) occasions.

deserving Wed 22-Aug-12 16:41:26

As a matter of interest, what is the longest thread?

absentgrana Wed 22-Aug-12 15:49:20

No this is by no means the longest linear thread – just for the record.

absentgrana Wed 22-Aug-12 15:46:19

POGS I have not seen a a thread that seemed to have been "started for no other reason than to incite discord" since I joined Gransnet in May last year.

This is so depressing. I am beginning to think that when people sling these sorts of wild accusations about willy nilly, they really ought to cite their references.

It wasn't 'a sop to the majority' - it really is difficult to tell precisely what you mean, deserving.

kittylester Wed 22-Aug-12 15:11:35

Really, really really confused or really, really, really [thick] - me that is!

Annobel Wed 22-Aug-12 14:35:54

Ariadne grin

Ariadne Wed 22-Aug-12 14:27:57

confused Do not quite understand. But it's OK, I really do not want another explanation.

deserving Wed 22-Aug-12 09:28:34

The vote did refer to benefits, and to voting in general. We are doomed to abide by the majority.
As a matter of courtesy, You ,do not correct a members spellin or grammar.
As for others, I refer you to several posts on the 5th of August, "textual & their, there. On Sunday as well!
Good morning all.
Would that I could bask in the excuse of senility.
No need to moderate what you know to be a correct interpretation with a sop to the majority.I think that is what happened,"but it's hard to tell".
Busy day, good deeds to do, don't ask.
wink

Annobel Tue 21-Aug-12 22:24:41

Ariadne, thanks for expressing with great clarity what I've been thinking. smile

Greatnan Tue 21-Aug-12 21:42:08

Good night, Ariadne, pleasant dreams.

Ariadne Tue 21-Aug-12 21:24:16

Oh dear! Good night all! (in a minute when I've checked other threads)

Nonu Tue 21-Aug-12 19:40:06

I"M charmed you are charmed grin

Greatnan Tue 21-Aug-12 19:03:33

Nonu, I am charmed that you are so interested in my career. I was Head of the Wirral Schools Remedial Service having previously been Head of Remedial Department at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School. Would you like details of the rest of my exciting life? Why not look at my profile?

jeni Tue 21-Aug-12 19:00:44

I'm getting senile! I'm completely confused.
I think I'll go away for some time!

Anagram Tue 21-Aug-12 18:58:14

It's possible that deserving was referring to the universal benefits debate - but it's hard to tell...

Ariadne Tue 21-Aug-12 18:55:09

I've just read most of this through, and am very interested in many of the posts and the antipathy and irritation shown - to teachers, to other posters, to a new poster, to a hard to read writing style and so on.

But, arriving at the end - a vote? Why, for heaven's sake? We are diverse, have opinions, argue, disagree - we are a community and most people can fit in, or dip in and out, or ignore provocative or diffuse posts IF they want to. We have our own off button, which is all the vote we need.

And anyway, what would be voting for? confused Bit thick.

jeni Tue 21-Aug-12 18:24:52

It's the spell check that does it!

BlueSky Tue 21-Aug-12 18:03:12

Why? To give it to those who have never paid a penny in...? confused

Nonu Tue 21-Aug-12 17:59:25

So u were a teacher , what head, deputy head ,interesting grin

Greatnan Tue 21-Aug-12 17:51:58

I use spell check before I post, just to be on the safe side. I am reasonably confident on grammar, having taught it for several years.

jeni Tue 21-Aug-12 17:36:06

If that were the case my iPad (not me of course) would be being constantly corrected!

Greatnan Tue 21-Aug-12 17:17:52

You are wrong on one point, deserving, as a matter of courtesy we do not usually correct a member's spelling or grammar.
