For Newsnight: should we end universal benefits for better off pensioners?

An ally of David Cameron's, Nick Boles, is about to make a speech calling for an end to universal benefits for better-off pensioners - bus passes, winter fuel allowance, free prescriptions - and the money to be spent on childcare.

We may go on Newsnight tonight to talk about this. What do you think? Any examples of how these benefits help or what they mean to people?

Not regular Gransnetters, jeni - I was thinking more of the occasional provocative poster!

jeni Sun 05-Aug-12 18:22:54

I don't think any of us do that !

Anagram Sun 05-Aug-12 18:20:59

Yes indeed, Bags!

Thanks, jeni - I had in fact Googled the wrong word, but at least I can't be accused of Knowitallism! wink

Annobel Sun 05-Aug-12 18:20:31

Let it never be said that we can't 'do weird'! wink

Bags Sun 05-Aug-12 18:08:36

What a weird thread!

jeni Sun 05-Aug-12 17:56:28

anathere is indeed both words. Mine is usually used in the context of advertising but there are other nuances of meaning.

Anagram Sun 05-Aug-12 17:45:16

Think I'll leave you to it.

Annobel Sun 05-Aug-12 17:43:51

I bow to your intentions, Humpty Dumpty!

Anagram Sun 05-Aug-12 17:43:24

Is there such a word as 'contextural'? hmm

Anagram Sun 05-Aug-12 17:41:54

...deem to post?

jeni Sun 05-Aug-12 17:39:54

It can mean having regard to the total contents a bit tautological perhaps but in the present context!

jeni Sun 05-Aug-12 17:37:17

The word meant what I meant it to my dear Alicegrin

Annobel Sun 05-Aug-12 17:32:47

jeni do you mean 'contextural'. grin grin!

Should we transfer this thread to Pedants' Corner?

Anagram Sun 05-Aug-12 17:30:29

I don't know what I am for pointing out that it should have been 'eats shoots', not 'eats grass'... confused

jeni Sun 05-Aug-12 17:26:00

Actually they do have a mild entertainment value! Considering the paucity of contextual content!

Annobel Sun 05-Aug-12 17:24:55

Oh, I've just realised that I might also be a 'grammar nazi'. I take that to be a compliment.

jeni Sun 05-Aug-12 17:21:51

I don't care. After the abuse I get at tribunals I'm asbestos suitedgrin

petallus Sun 05-Aug-12 17:09:32

I did wonder about computer generated!!

Whatever, I find the posts entertaining.

Annobel Sun 05-Aug-12 17:09:05

I noticed that too but I'm already accused of being a 'spelling flamer', so thought I had better shut up. hmm

Nonu Sun 05-Aug-12 17:03:40

Maybe DES. meant Textual ? got spelling wrong !!!

jeni Sun 05-Aug-12 16:53:59

Surely textural is relating to texture, as in fibres rather than sending texts? confused

johanna Sun 05-Aug-12 16:46:44

Every post by deserving has reminded me of one of those martians in the instant mashed potato commercial- Smash - I think it was called.

Elegran Sun 05-Aug-12 16:10:04

You were hoping for a bite then? Thought so. Once bitten the taste puts me off, so you won't be troubled by me again. It takes two to make a quarrel.

Bye.

deserving Sun 05-Aug-12 16:02:06

At last, a bite from a "Spelling Flamer",and no surprise regarding shoots, makes it difficult to pretend their, there, are no "grammar nazis' on line, and no "textural bullying" (or something similar,) being attempted. Wish I was asked to review literary pieces of writing, sounds lucrative, but with dyslexia i might not be suitable, and you can't rely on American spellcheckers.(unless you are American)
"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."Any need to attribute? Possibly there is, the quality of mercy seems a little strained, being Sunday, and all, innit.
Come back Whitewave it isn't always like this,Oh! Sorry, it is,but I agree with you. Hope that hasn't marked you down if you deem to post again, probably not, for that to happen you would have to agree with me.
Is "pariah" time sensitive I wonder?
flag smile

Jeni you must have read enough text by enough different writers to compare styles.
