What will make the headlines after the Olympics?

Has anyone got a crystal ball which might indicate what news stories we have to look forward to after the Olympics?

Will it be the double dip? Kate's phantom pregnancy? The spiralling price of food? The carnage in Syria?

All suggestions welcome ...

JO4 Fri 10-Aug-12 20:33:12

It will be Syria, won't it. sad

But you never know. There could be an amazing picture beamed back from Mars showing a whole, and before now undiscovered, thriving civillisation.

DGS and I live in hope. smile

And what excuse can I find for reclining on the sofa watching daytime TV? Cash in the Attic or whatever won't do it!

Do you mean after the Olympics post-mortem, Jack? I can see that subject occupying a lot of newspaper-space for several weeks yet....e.g. how much benefit has the staging of the Games actually brought to Britain etc.

Ella46 Fri 10-Aug-12 21:31:04

Won't it be the Paralympics?

eGJ Fri 10-Aug-12 21:35:30

Do hope you're right Ella46 I'd like there to be great Paralympic coverage and for the feeling good factor to continue! flag

Dave & Nick and oh yes, Nick and Dave - and George of course from time to time smile

Ella46 and eGJ. I'm glad you mentioned the Paralympics. There is bound to be lots of coverage of these, and rightly so. There will also be some incredibly moving human interest stories about the brave men and women who have faced up to their disabilities and achieved so many remarkable successes.

But when it's all over what is going to replace all those hours of TV coverage and all those pages of press coverage?

The weather? Surely not! UK politics? Probably. The forthcoming American election? Almost certainly. hmm

I agree - the Paralympics!!! See that the Chris Evans show that has been coming from the Park every morning is now back in the studio. Hope they return for the Paralympics so that he gets to chat to some of our medallists from those games. They all deserve as much air time as the able bodied flag

I think the Greek exit from the Euro will take on a new pace. When countries like Germany see their exports drop and un-employment starts to creep in I don't think there is as much backing from the Germen voter as there is with the political elite.

They worked too hard when East Germany fell to do financial austerity all over again.

JessM Sun 12-Aug-12 11:12:46

Party conferences loom with politicians trying to get some kudos from the olympic games. Dave out of the blocks already.
I agree Euro crisis will go back up the agenda once all those involved come back from the Seychelles or wherever.

Frankel Sun 12-Aug-12 12:56:55

The Euro Crisis is the safest bet - but, remember, the football season is upon us so more idle chat about this, that and presumably, the other. Safe bet that the GB Speedway Grand Prix at the Millennium Stadium on 25 August won't get a mention, let alone headlines. It will attract 40,000 cheering [but usually well-behaved] fans from many countries and it will be largely ignored.

Annika Sun 12-Aug-12 13:05:26

Bellesnan I don't suppose Chris Evans will do his show from the park for the Paralympics as the BBC are not 'doing' it I think it is on Channel 4 flag

"the GB Speedway Grand Prix at the Millennium Stadium won't get a mention"

I wonder why not. hmm

Ella46 Sun 12-Aug-12 13:16:44

When I was young and Adam was a lad grin I used to love going to the speedway at Belle Vue.

Frankel Sun 12-Aug-12 16:03:42

I caught the speedway bug when I was 9 and, off and on, it has been a point of contact between my brothers and I ever since. The riders are brave and the races can be very exciting, particularly in the GP Series where the best in the world compete. Sky has done a great job but Speedway hasn't really been 'fashionable' since the 1950's. Media executives don't meet many speedway fans at the ballet or opera; and in the UK, the sport is more Reading than Eton or Harrow. It is big in Poland but overall, it needs sponsors with deep pockets and a marketing angle.

Ella46 Sun 12-Aug-12 16:35:05

That smell too! Nothing like it grin

Ariadne Sun 12-Aug-12 16:40:44

Hasn't it been great not to see Cameron /Clegg/Milliband and their hangers on every few minutes? Didn't realise this until Millie turned up on Breakfast this morning.

Frankel Sun 12-Aug-12 17:48:16

Ethanol Ella - I know what you mean. smile

jack Sun 12-Aug-12 18:16:41

Poor old/young Ed the Milliband. I tried - really I did - to concentrate on what he was trying to say from his garden (I suppose it was his garden) early this morning but after 30 seconds I switched off. He was grinning away like an oxygen-starved goldfish, desperately willing viewers to LOVE him.

Sorry Ed. We've got other fish to fry now that we have some true Olympian heroes (and heroines). You'll simply have to dream up some new tactics to win us over. But please put "flirting with the camera" at the bottom of your list. grin
