A headline in the DT this morning made choke on my bread and marmalade wink. You would never have known if they hadn't told you that cereal bars are more "fatty" than cola, would you? WHAT?! I thought cola was just sugar and water and a few flavourings. Fatty? What are they talking about?

Answer: sugar.

Yes, sugar, not fat.

Sigh!

No wonder people ignore "healthy eating" advice.

Whoever wrote that imbecile headline (probably a machine hmm) presumably meant "fattening", by which they mean cereal bars have more simple carbohydrates (sugar) in them than a can of cola.

Double sigh!

And as for the "myth" that cereal bars are healthy snacks, lazy journo, that myth doesn't EXIST! Everyone knows cereal bars are just cake or biscuits.

Eats cake. Chomp, chomp.

shock

That is so bad! In the Telegraph too. hmm

Is the Editor on holiday?

Hello Jingle I hope you are well smile

Even my healthy flapjacks, with agave nectar and honey to sweeten, are fattening if not eaten in moderation. It doesn't matter how many nuts, seeds and fruits go into them.

Everything is fattening if not eaten in moderation, even hyper-healthy food!

Nice to know that I am not the only DT reader on herewink
Bags, it says that the 'study', if you could call it that, was carried out for Which?.
I'm sure most Which? readers are perfectly capable of reading the ingredients on packaged food for themselves, perhaps they would give me a job doing just that, and dressing it up as a 'study'.
Anyone who is interested to learn just what horrible things sugar, particularly high fructose-glucose syrup, an ingredient of many manufactured cakes and biscuits, does to you might like to watch Robert Lustig, a paediatric endocinologist, in action at the University of San Francisco.

You'll never feel the same about sugar again!

Bags - what about lettuce and celery? Please tell me they aren't fattening.shock

Bags Sat 18-Aug-12 10:21:57

Hmm. Forgot about those, didn't I? I think you use as many calories just eating them as they're worth wink. They aren't usually eaten alone though (who would?). There's the rub.

Hello whenim. I'm fine ta. Just back from a few days in Devon.

Hope all well with you and yours.

I hate sloppiness and it so unnecessary.

I am a great supporter of the American food writer, Michael Pollan.

He has come up with a simple rule for a good diet: 'Eat well, not too much, most of it plants' and its corollary 'If it is made from a plant eat it, if it is made in a plant, dont.'

He is another who says we should avoid high fructose corn syrup.

jeni Sat 18-Aug-12 17:16:39

whencan I have the recipe for those flapjacks please?

whenim64 Sat 18-Aug-12 17:41:01

Hi jeni
I usually put several different fruits and nuts into the mixture, so here's a typical one:
6 ozs porridge oats
Handful each of dried cranberries, raisins, pumpkin seeds and chopped walnuts
1 chopped apple
1 tablespoon each of agave nectar and honey
2 ozs melted butter

Stir together to a sticky mixture and press into a lined square tin. Bake at 180 C for 20 mins till golden. When cool, cut into 8 bars.

It is quite crumbly, so if you want it more like the usual flapjacks, add extra butter and sweeten with golden syrup instead.

jeni Sat 18-Aug-12 18:00:45

Sounds very healthy?hmm

whenim64 Sat 18-Aug-12 18:11:06

Yes, lots of good things in there -- but unfortunately too tempting to make them last-- grin
