Do you believe the allegations that he groomed underage girls for sex and if so, do you hold accountable those in the media/BBC et al who heard rumours, had suspicions, saw evidence etc., but said nothing (probably to protect their careers)?

Personally, I always thought he was weird - even going back as far as schooldays when he was an up and coming DJ. I wouldn't have been at all surprised if all this had come out years ago and maybe it should.

shock to both of the previousd posts!

I have been remembering the headmaster at school. When we were in the sports hall, in our knickers, lying on our backs with our legs in the air, he would come in and 'inspect' us, taking his time about it.

He used to get girls to stand by his desk and read to him whilst he rubbed their backs and fiddled with their bra straps. There was a rumour that on one occasion he deliberately walked into the changing room when one particularly attractive girl was getting changed.

That sort of behaviour with adolescent girls and young teenagers was rife in those days and probably still is. It's a terrible and despicable way for grown men to behave but I still worry more about very young children being abused/raped on a regular basis in institutions and the home.

Did anybody else see this letter in the latest edition of Private Eye:

'Is there anybody out there who has not been molested by Sir Jimmy Savile - apparently the world's most successful paedophile?

Well, I wasn't but only because I never met him. I was however "abused" in modern parlance, by Sir Norman Wisdom OBE, who once unexpectedly thrust his tongue down my throat while I was trying to interview him.

I think he was just a foolish old goat - perhaps he was going into self-parody, but should we perhaps start up a new line of enquiry about him just for a change? Perhaps they can both be exhumed and reviled together?'

Name of sender given but I am omitting it.

nanaej Jimmy Savile always seemed weird though. Freddie Starr just seems bonkers. But harmless. (I could be wrong!) Who knows?

Riverwalk Fri 02-Nov-12 09:32:56

Is it any wonder that children and young teens find it difficult to report abuse and inappropriate behaviour when everyone from the royal family, the Vatican, BBC, NHS consultants, Esther Rantzen, Savile's own relatives and almost everyone who ever came into contact with him, kept quiet for over 40 years.

Perhaps we should also remember that Matthew Kelly was never charged as no evidence against him had emerged.

At one time I worked as music director for the impressionist, Paul Melba. He and Freddie Starr were pals, having been brought up together in Huyton. As a result I met Freddie on quite a few occasions - once we visited him at home when his then wife was away in hospital. My main memory of that evening is making sure never to get between Freddie and the swimming pool! Freddie and Paul were both fond of women... but I never heard the slightest whisper of anything illicit about either of them.

AlieOxon Fri 02-Nov-12 08:17:09

That's what I remember.

Boys have been mentioned re Savile too, though.

Greatnan Fri 02-Nov-12 07:32:25

Isn't Matthew Kelly more inclined to boys?

AlieOxon Fri 02-Nov-12 06:13:25

Matthew Kelly always made me feel uncomfortable sitting too near to young girls in hospital.

Latest news is that he has been arrested.

merlotgran Thu 01-Nov-12 22:24:06

Freddie Starr has come across as 'unhinged' on many occasions. That doesn't mean he's guilty of abusing young girls but I dont think he's ever cared what people think of him. Restrained is not a word he was familiar with in his heyday.

Greatnan Thu 01-Nov-12 22:15:40

Jingle - do you know Freddie Starr?

Ana Thu 01-Nov-12 22:01:36

And he did lie about never having met JS - until footage was produced.

nanaej Thu 01-Nov-12 21:46:16

It would seem that is how JS got away with his behaviour for so long j05

But innocent until proven guilty....

jO5 Thu 01-Nov-12 21:21:13

I don't believe Freddie Starr has done anything wrong. I know he's been a right "jack-the-lad" in the past, but this just isn't him.

numberplease Thu 01-Nov-12 20:43:31

I see that Freddie Starr has been arrested tonight, he`ll probably be out on bail soon, like Gary Glitter.

There was a Hull man on the local news today, said he was abused by Savile at Leeds General Infirmary over 30 years ago, whilst Savile was pushing th stretcher that he was on, and he was in his 20s at the time! He complained, but was told he was a liar, but surely a man in his 20s could have done something to stop him, unless he was fairly incapacitated, which he doesn`t say.
I`d be interested in knowing whether any of the allegations have come from America. I remember many years ago, after interviewing a 13 or 14 year old Brenda Lee, he made a jokey comment later that she seemed to think he was trying to pick her up, and kept looking to see if her mother was still outside the door.

soop Wed 31-Oct-12 11:34:11

The last four letters of JS's name spell vile...very appropriate.

jO5 Wed 31-Oct-12 10:35:34

why didn't he speak out at the time?!

That is really shocking. Surely someone must have had suspicions? confused

AlieOxon Mon 29-Oct-12 07:13:59

See they arested Gary Glitter too yesterday - now out on bail....

glammanana Sun 28-Oct-12 15:52:29

Well done by your son crimson what an absolute star he is.

crimson Sun 28-Oct-12 13:15:09

Not sure why he and his pals picked up on that OGM. Will ask him about it. Perhaps it was something that had happened to someone or they were warned about it when they started uni. I know the kids at Leeds all looked out for each other. Yes; he is a dear boy smile.

Oldgreymare Sun 28-Oct-12 13:08:57

Hurrah for your son Crimson

crimson Sun 28-Oct-12 13:06:53

It surprised me when I realised that my son always got into taxis before any girls that he was with, until he explained that, as a man you always get in first due to the fact that the taxi could drive away as soon as your friend had got in.
