Disgraceful rejection of women bishops. If we have to have bishops in the House of Lords at least let some of them be women!

Stansgran Wed 21-Nov-12 17:51:08

Don't really know what the fuss is about . Dress them up in the same clothes copes mitres etc and you can't tell what sex they are apart from the dangly earrings and the occasional beard.if you remember that Henry VIII was the founder of the Cof E then really he was not very fond of some women when they disagreed with him.

Well I must say, it's the first time I've seen atheists rationalists and church goers so united!
Mind you, I totally agree with you all!

Naughty giggles from Kintyre. grin

Yes, I did, soop. Sorry for the typo wink

I heard on the radio that one of the Arch Bishops has launched an online petition to dissolve the Synod (at least I think that's what they said, I was trying to overtake a wobbly cyclist at the time)

...off to wash my mouth out blush

soop Wed 21-Nov-12 16:09:58

Bags Did you mean to type...pompous twats? Twits seems a bit mild to me. grin

OK absent, perhaps not quite right re company.

I know that this isn't the way it's done but why cannot they have a 2/3 majority vote overall instead of in each house. I read the total vote was 324 for to 123 against (inluding abstentions). Therefore a vote of 298 would have been enough to have women bishops.

Greatnan Wed 21-Nov-12 15:44:06

I don't feel devalued and degraded - the opinions of a bunch of religious bigots mean nothing whatsoever to me. I just hope this accelerates the ousting of bishops of any gender from the House of Lords. A glance at the census figures on religious affiliation soon shows that there is no mandate for them to be playing any part in the legislative process.

Hermia46 Wed 21-Nov-12 15:15:49

Totally agree with the foregoing comments. The outcome for the church and women is disastrous. Where is the logic that says a small vociferous minority can govern and control the majority. Where would the church today be without women, and I don't mean cleaning and flowers although I have done that in my time. The advent of women priests has been nothing but good there is absolutely no biblical reason why women should not be ordained to the highest office in the C of E. The Synod has laid itself wide open to a legal challenge on equality (if parliament remove their protection from this legislation) and worse really it has devalued and downgraded women in the UK. angry

flump Bishops, Clergy and Laity are all on the "board of directors" in your analogy. Some have already (nearly 20 years ago) joined another "firm" – Roman Catholicism – many of them former C of E clergy plus Anne Widdecombe.

flump Wed 21-Nov-12 15:02:26

Just a thought!

If we consider the C of E as a company and the Bishops and Clery as directors voting in favour of this propostion for the benefit of that company, would they really take into consideration the thoughts of a few employees? I think not.

Perhaps those against the idea should join another firm where a 'no women in position of authority' policy reins.

AlieOxon Wed 21-Nov-12 14:44:36

Good T-shirt shown for several seconds on the BBC News just now - said something like
"Christ was an equal opportunities employer - Pity about the Church"

Mishap Wed 21-Nov-12 13:53:57

Well the chap in the Guardian seems to have got it about right.

These dinosaurs have an automatic right to sit in our legislature even though this ruling is (in any other walk of life) illegal. I am sure that the calls to get rid of bishops in the H of L will become more strident now - hooray say I!

What a kick in the teeth for those women clergy who have proved themselves in the area of pastoral care. I am agnostic, but still feel angry on their behalf.

It is really quite scary that the fundamentalist/evangelical wing is allowed to wield such power.

merlotgran Wed 21-Nov-12 13:49:08

I caught a bit on Jeremy Vine where some daft old bat said she thought women lack the necessary leadership qualities (or words to that effect).

Unless I'm mistaken, isn't the head of the Church of England a woman? hmm

Anne58 Wed 21-Nov-12 13:09:11

Rowan Williams was NOT impressed, by the sound of it.

Riverwalk Wed 21-Nov-12 09:19:07

Like absent I also don't give a fig about the inner workings of the C of E, but I'm indignant that we'll have to hear about it for the next 10 years!

absentgrana Wed 21-Nov-12 09:09:16

Compare and contrast with the election of Police Commissioners…

annodomini Wed 21-Nov-12 09:04:26

Even in the House of Laity, where they needed a 2/3 majority, the pro-side only lost by six votes. And over the Synod as a whole, the majority was 74%.

absentgrana Wed 21-Nov-12 08:35:34

Clergy AND Bishops in favour, laity against, especially female laity. I blame St Paul of Extreme Misogyny.

Good words phoenix – just a bit more extreme than pee, po, belly, bum, drawers of Flanders and Swann fame.

As an atheist I couldn't give a fig what the Church of England does with its inner workings, but as a woman I am indignant.

JessM Wed 21-Nov-12 07:50:18

Hear hear. Even if they have no interest in the job, it is a poke in the eye for the contribution they are making.

Wheniwasyourage Wed 21-Nov-12 07:28:12

As a member of the C of S (no bishops, women ministers but only one female Moderator so far - ridiculous) I feel so sorry for the women C of E priests who have been thwarted again, particularly when the clergy have gone for it this time. It was sad to see so many in tears again sad - how much more rejection do they have to put up with? flowers and [hugs] for any GNer who is a priest or close to one.

Nelliemoser Wed 21-Nov-12 07:22:00

I wonder if a lot of this opposition has come from the militant tendency evangelical wing of the C of E. They are the ones that seem to be into submiting to husbands, anti gay etc etc.

phoenix grin grin

Ariadne Wed 21-Nov-12 07:00:11

I cannot believe it! You have all
said exactly what I think, and Phoenix you are so right; it wouldn't be allowed anywhere else. How CAN other women be so spectacularly stupid?

Very very very bad words! angry
