Disgraceful rejection of women bishops. If we have to have bishops in the House of Lords at least let some of them be women!

annodomini Tue 20-Nov-12 18:57:45

Words fail me. And that's unusual.

absentgrana Tue 20-Nov-12 19:03:58

It looks as if the women lay members of the synod were a large part of the rejection. [sighing with the eyes emoticon] Just get on with polishing the brass, arranging the flowers and making the cakes for the sale – all the things that you are good at and are worthwhile.

Lilygran Tue 20-Nov-12 19:10:43

Totally illogical! Once it was agreed that women should be ordained, that should have been the end of it. Bishops aren't a higher order of clergy, they are priests with different responsibilities. Grrr snarl growl.

petallus Tue 20-Nov-12 19:24:02

Infuriating!

grannyactivist Tue 20-Nov-12 19:26:37

Unbiblical tosh!!!!
There are powerful, compelling and practical reasons for Christians to embrace the biblical vision for gender equality.

absentgrana Tue 20-Nov-12 19:29:29

Let's not have bishops in the House of Lords – male, female or whatever. Actually, I'd be quite happy not to have them in the "House of God" either.

Mishap Tue 20-Nov-12 19:33:45

Prats!! - what can they be thinking of? I am not a christian, but have several friends who are women priests and they will be hopping mad - and who can blame them?

Ana Tue 20-Nov-12 19:42:16

I agree that there shouldn't be any in the House of Lords. It's ridiculous! There shouldn't be so many Lords, either....

merlotgran Tue 20-Nov-12 19:56:18

The women lay members probably still think all doctors should be men and women, nurses. angry

MiceElf Tue 20-Nov-12 19:59:33

The USA, Australia, New Zealand and Swaziland have all ordained women as bishops. The new and third world is giving a loud and clear message to the dinosaurs in England.

Anne58 Tue 20-Nov-12 20:01:00

Well put, merlot , it's a bit like saying that women are not allowed to be heads of departments, or be on the board of companies. If this sort of behaviour was in the business sector it would be classed as discrimination and not allowed!

jeni Tue 20-Nov-12 20:18:18

The most stupid decision in modern ecclesiastical historyangryangryangry

Granny23 Tue 20-Nov-12 20:36:48

Women - know your place!

UN- BE- LIEVE- ABLE angry

petallus Tue 20-Nov-12 20:40:41

I suspect that for some women, male priests are romantic authority figures. Different dynamic if the priest is a woman.

Anne58 Tue 20-Nov-12 20:49:32

I think that women priests are far less likely to find themselves arrested, as certain others of the cloth have been very recently!

I wish someone could explain why the church is allowed to actively discriminate, where other organisations could be prosecuted.

Even some job advertisements have to show a sort of disclaimer, for example one I saw recently for a supermarket check out job stated that they had been allowed dispensation with regard to age discrimination laws, as because alcohol was sold, all till operatives had to be over 18.

JessM Tue 20-Nov-12 21:34:35

pretty resounding unanimous horror then?

merlotgran Tue 20-Nov-12 22:01:17

OK, petallus, who have you got in mind. The priest from The Thorn Birds or Ballykissangel?

Ana Tue 20-Nov-12 22:04:31

I think that's a very good point, petallus.

wisewoman Tue 20-Nov-12 22:09:48

I heard a woman lay member of the synod interviewed on BBC and she said these words "Male priests should be ultimate authority in the church as fathers are the ultimate authority in the home." I swear she said this in 2012 on the BBC. I was speechless.

Grandola Tue 20-Nov-12 22:38:17

I feel so sad about this decision. [Sad] But I'm also confused.confused How can just a few people overturn a decision that was agreed by the clergy themselves? It's totally bonkers! How demoralising for the women who are clearly capable of taking on such roles - how belittling and how discriminatory. God must be shedding tears over the sorry mess.

annodomini Tue 20-Nov-12 22:46:08

wisewoman, I nearly drowned in the shower when I heard her saying that! shock

Anne58 Tue 20-Nov-12 22:55:25

wisewoman that has made me very, very angry I'm not a violent person, but that comment up there ^ makes me want to get hold of that woman, give her a damn good shaking, tie her to a chair and make her watch videos that show exactly how there are households that are NOT run by men, "Oh goodness me, are there really some women who can function without a man?* [fit of the vapours emoticon]

And maybe also draw the daft cows attention that women do now actually have the vote and the intelligence to use it!

Oh, and of course, male priests are ALL pillars of the community, whose word is law.

I'm about to indulge in a really good swear, please look away now if you don't want to see the result:

Shit bugger arsehole bugger wank poo.

So there.

merlotgran Tue 20-Nov-12 23:01:32

phoenix. grin You could get excommunificated for that.

isthisallthereis Tue 20-Nov-12 23:14:14

This disgraceful result will do the C of E a lot of harm, making it look ridiculous and totally out of touch. I am very embarrassed, very angry and very shocked. I seriously thought it would go through this time. Do we really have another 10 years or more of this nonsense to go through? There are so many much more pressing and serious things to debate. There should be no question about women bishops. We need them. As with women priests, they will be entirely a good thing.
