Just heard the nurse who was tricked into giving out information to two Australian DJs has, apparently, commited suicide.

Very sad

Sometimes people feel very strongly about a subject, and inevitably another person takes the exact opposite point of view. Fair enough. We all enjoy a good exchange of different views.

It starts to get 'tense' when too many people jump in on one 'side'. Then the poster can feel they are under attack and they can react defensively.

It doesn't take any skill to escalate the situation. It's all too easy to trade personal comments, take offence and make things worse. Surely we are better than that?

Ana Fri 14-Dec-12 21:51:51

I think that a frank exchange of views and the odd personal confrontation is much healthier than 'veiled references', but I may well be in the minority.

glassortwo Fri 14-Dec-12 21:55:04

ana a frank exchange is all good and well, its the personal attack which is unnecessary.

Ana Fri 14-Dec-12 22:02:36

Yes, I did understand that was the point, glass, but it depends on how you define a personal attack. If I say that I think someone is being unreasonable, is that a personal attack? One person's 'personal attack' may be another person's 'justifiable criticism'. I'm not trying to cause controversy, just putting forward a point of view.

janeainsworth Fri 14-Dec-12 22:12:01

Agree with you Ana confused

merlotgran Fri 14-Dec-12 22:17:07

So do I, Ana

merlotgran Fri 14-Dec-12 22:17:58

I think the only one under personal attack was the Queen hmm

glassortwo Fri 14-Dec-12 22:22:58

Is the other poster not allowed to put forward a point of view and will that poster feel the responses from the other side were reasonable, there is always two side to every argument.

glassortwo Fri 14-Dec-12 22:26:00

I had not read any of this thread until tonight and I was shocked at the way the thread turned into back biting of each other.

merlotgran Fri 14-Dec-12 22:27:23

glassortwo, As far as this thread is concerned, no posters were prevented from putting across a point of view. And both sides of the argument were discussed in full. confused

glassortwo Fri 14-Dec-12 22:35:04

But merlot is there any need for it to get to the stage where it looks as though a poster is being bullied because of their point of view..

Jodi Fri 14-Dec-12 22:42:29

Sorry to go on but some people did escalate the argument beyond what was acceptable.

glass is correct and I'll back her up on this. It wasn't a case merlot of posters being prevented from 'putting across a point of view' but some people taking what was said and putting the worst possible spin on it. I too was shocked.

However, this discussion we are having now could go two ways . Perhaps it would be best if we all just step back, sleep on it and let it lie? moon

merlotgran Fri 14-Dec-12 22:46:03

I haven't been sent to bed for years grin

Jodi Fri 14-Dec-12 22:51:38

Good night, sleep tight merlot x I'm a bossy besom sometimes!

Ana Fri 14-Dec-12 22:53:36

Yes, that's us told! hmm

glassortwo Fri 14-Dec-12 22:56:44

jodi grin I cant go to bed yet, if I keep quiet can I stay up a little longer please grin

Jodi Fri 14-Dec-12 23:10:16

Well ok glass but only if you're a good girl and don't wake up the others wink

Ana Fri 14-Dec-12 23:18:17

Pardon? confused

Gillybob is one of us. It's not us and them it's WE. No group on here gets to decide who is in and who is out. Having different views is what makes a forum interesting. I suggest those who get their backs up when someone has an opposing view take themselves and find a forum which is the Grannies who like to chat only to those who have exactly the same views forum. Shheeesh. confused

Back to the Queen. In the early 80s the Queen visited D1's high school. D1 took a beautiful bunch of Australian native flowers and was able to give them to the Queen as she walked by. Later D2 and I stood on the side of the road waiting to see the Queen pass by. She did and we saw through the back window of the vehicle a single bunch of Australian native flowers. The Queen must have liked them. smile

Lilygran Sat 15-Dec-12 09:05:02

Like that,*Faye*. As someone who had expressed fairly forceful views, I was beginning to feel got at for doing so. But you are right, about us being 'we'. And someone who expresses minority views one day might be in a majority the next.

Bags Sat 15-Dec-12 09:09:48

Well said, faye.

Marelli Sat 15-Dec-12 17:38:05

You've put your point forward so well, Faye. Thank you. flowers

I do have much sympathy with all parties involved and I would be a fool to say the family have not got my utmost sympathy.

I am about to ask a question that I sincerley hope does not offend anyone, as that is not my intention, so I will apologise if I do.

I don't know why I am finding the Keith Vaz and Westminster Cathedral Memorial hard to find 100% appropriate. I feel rather bad about my view and I would appreciate G.N.' s telling me their view in a manner which will inform me if I am just being horrible without too much direct personal attack please. I do understand if I am totally wrong on this one, I genuinely worry why I have this feeling given the sadness of the story. I am usually extremely empathetic to the point of being a bit soppy.

Nonu Sat 15-Dec-12 18:13:23

{fsad]

Keith Vaz !!!

Nonu Sat 15-Dec-12 18:14:36

Pogs , you are not the only one .
