A second reading of the above bill is on January 23rd. Appears to be a popular item to try and stop benefit claimants from spending our hard earned cash being spent on drink drugs smoking and gambling. It can only be used for food and transport. this is obviously an attempt to help focus the spending, especially when claiments have children.
I personally think this may help and is worth a try, I hate seeing kids standing around outside betting shops and making do with a sausage roll for breakfast while mother smokes away, what do others think?

But POGS don't you realise that Thatcher is to blame for the majority of what is wrong with the country - granted you can't blame her for Afghanistan, but Iraq ? The reason we thought they had WMD is her bloody cronies sold them to him

The reason our kids cant get decent homes to live in? She sold our housing stock at cut down prices

The reason our trains are crap , and utilities exorbitant - she sold our assets that we owned to people with money out to make a quick buck - ditto deregulation of public transport
She systematically ruined all that was good about this country - she was responsible for schools no longer having to provide cooked lunches, which led to an outbreak of threadworms, and a rise in obesity among children

i could go on, but I know your not for turning """""""""

BANG ON.

No I do not realise Thatcher was to blame for the majority of what is wrong with the country.

"The reason we thought they had WMD is her bloody cronies sold them to him".

Forgive me but wasn't it the case they never found weapons of mass destruction?. Is it so unreasonable to say that Tony Blair was so called GWB poodle. I am sure Doctor Kelly, had he been alive, might be able to enlighten us all a little more. Sexed up dossiers and all that.

"The reason our kids can't get can't get decent homes to live in, She sold our housing stock at cut down prices".

Yes she did, it gave the likes of my mum and dad the ability to buy our council house and it gave me the opportunity to learn that if I worked hard I could think of buying a home not renting one which I had become indoctrinated to as a thought. Labour has a dire record on building social housing after 13 years of government, this lot need to do better too.

As for trains and utilities you might have a point, we won't know. I do remember the 3 day week and the country being held hostage and bugger all got done. Well, we all got done, out of jobs and money to pay the bills because our wages had been hit by the union strikes.I remember being sent to coventry by the union when I was 16 because I dared to say I didn't want to join the union. Happy days they were. If and when it happens again, possibly soon, at least our kids will get to see it in all it's glory. I wonder what they will think.

As for obesity, it's not because parents don't know how to cook good food that costs no more than a Mc Donalds, is it?

Oh and by the way my GD who is 6 has got threadworms and her mum.

Thank you for answering. The shorter answer would have been no I cannot think beyond Thatcher. sad

susieb755, ""Its time we stopped demonising people on benefits""

The Tories have always used this ploy to get an audience and get votes.

And the right wing press go with it, because they need to appeal to their readership.

Ivanhoe Tue 12-Feb-13 21:54:17

POGS,

We British are living with Thatcher's legacy everyday.

New Labour continued Thatcher's policies.

David Cameron is finished what Thatcher started.

susieb755 Tue 12-Feb-13 21:45:40

Its time we stopped demonising people on benefits = yes some people may smoke/drink and be feckless parents , but not the majority, and why should they be treated in such a demeaning fashion ! Could they sue them at local butchers shops, bakers, market stalls etc? or trapped into buying a supermarkets

Do you know Labour were in charge for the last 13 years not Margaret Thatcher????

You are obsessed with Margaret Thatcher, like some others I know, why can't you debate or relate to this past decade, are you afraid to admit Labour might have got a few things wrong.

You hate Margaret Thatcher with all your heart, like others I know. Don't you think that at some stage you have to accept that decades later it is tantamount to showing a lack of intellect to blame her for all this countries problems. You would find a way of blaming her for taking us to war in Iraq and Afghanistan if you had your way. angry

Polite? A gentleman? (CF earlier thread) The original Ivanhoe certainly was...

vampirequeen, ""I'm a diehard supporter. I'd vote for a chimp if it wore a red rosette. My feeling is that although my party has moved to the right it's still a damn sight better than the others""

Yes, under Tony Blair in 1997, Labour moved to the right and embraced Margaret Thatcher's free maret policies.

Ivanhoe Tue 12-Feb-13 13:19:05

Ceesnan, then you are part responsible for the awful State of this country today.

I couldn't agree more, Sel! (More a cudgel than a lance, I'd say.)

Ceesnan Fri 08-Feb-13 18:56:51

flowers Sel.

Sel Fri 08-Feb-13 16:06:49

Come on out Ceesnan unless you're worried about Ivanhoe's lance smile

I resent any attempt to label me; like most people I know, I pick and mix. I don't think there are many die hard supporters of any political party left. Most are disillusioned with the lot of them.

Ceesnan Fri 08-Feb-13 14:16:58

Yes, I vote Tory and am quite happy to admit it. I also read The Daily Mail and The Express.... Ducks behind parapet, shaking.

Galen Fri 08-Feb-13 00:42:05

I regard myself as apolitical.
I am afraid, that I see a lot of people who have fallen into the pain, depression, socio pathogenic, cycle.
I can't do diagrams on here!
I've just come home from a lecture on back pain!
ThIs and mental problems form the majority of the of claims for ESA
Most back pain disability is due to psychosocial reasons.

As far as the assessments for mental problems are concerned, in my opinion, they are poorly performed and inadequate!

A large proportion of people who appeal DWP decisions succeed, even more if they come and have representation!

Sermon over!smile

Ivanhoe Fri 08-Feb-13 00:01:03

Hands up any Tory voters/supporters on here ?

Ivanhoe Thu 07-Feb-13 23:59:20

RINKY, Why dont you just advocate bringing back the work houses ? Food banks now nationwide are a good start.

petra Wed 23-Jan-13 21:36:18

Anyone who says "this can't/ won't happen" has their head in the sand.
Do none of you remember way back in the mists of time when The Welfare Man came into your house and told you what you could sell if you were on Welfare.
We are in deep deep poo and if you think that these people won't resort to anything of this sort again: think on.

absent Tue 22-Jan-13 17:21:06

anno That is changing with IDS welfare reform bill. (He doesn't call it reform but something even more misleading that I can't now remember.) In future, it will always be paid to the claimant.
