Wish list for Britain

I was talking to a friend last, to whom I haven't spoken for ages. Naturally we set the world to rights. This made me think about how I felt about the current political situation and others things. So I set out it down. I warn you it's a long post and you may get bored. Say what you want! It won't upset me. If I like that you say, I'm pleased. If not, I don't care. So here goes:

I was thinking about what I wanted for Britain as a whole and here is my wish list:

I want everyone to be proud of being British.

I want the NHS to be the best. This is not going to happen as long as we allow illegal immigrants and others, who have paid no taxes or insurance to come here and claim benefits. This does not help anyone as the service is under severe strain. If you are sick in a European country, you have to pay and then claim back the money on your return to the UK. Why don’t we do that here? Look at the mistakes you keep reading about – children sent home and told ‘it’s only a virus’ and then die of something more serious. Cancers not caught in time because the symptoms have been missed as ‘nothing’. It’s can’t go on.

We can’t allow unrestricted immigration as we are a small island and there must be a tipping point. It may have already been reached. Services and infrastructure suffer because of too many people claiming benefits. I have no objection to people coming here working and paying their taxes.

The same goes for education. The standard needs to be raised considerably and not dumbed down to the lowest level. The problem in many schools is that English is not the first language and therefore children whose first language is English are held back by the rest of the classes. The problem lies with parents who come here and don’t make an effort to learn English and therefore their children have problems. I like cultural diversity but not to the detriment of Britain.

Justice needs to be toughened up! Stopping using the European Human Rights Act as an excuse not to punish or deport foreign criminals. People should serve the full sentence they are handed down and not let out after about a quarter of time served. I believe in the death penalty for crimes such as those where children are raped, tortured and killed. And if anyone did that to one of my children or grandchildren, I would happily throw the switch.

Religion – I think all religions should be tolerant of other religions. People are entitled to believe what they want, even if they list Jedi as their religion!

Politics – I am a Conservative and would never vote anything else, but I’m disappointed with David Cameron. I think he’s favours the Lib Dums too much. I know it’s hard for him in a coalition government, but he does need to stand up and be counted. UKIP is a little too much for me, although I agree with some of their policies (leaving the EU for instance). I suppose I’m somewhere between David Cameron and UKIP.

That's it!! gringrin

Ivanhoe

I have tried to resist but you have thrown out the fishing line and hooked me in again.

Have you any knowledge of the Stafford Hospital Report. If you have not might I suggest you educate yourself. This was the period Labour were in charge of the NHS and openly admit to throwing money at the NHS and building new hospitals. Those would be the hospitals that are suffering badly now because of the Labour governments prolific wasting of money and the PFI deals they sanctioned that are crippling them financially.

It was not lack of funding that caused the patients to drink water from flower vases. It was not a lack of funding that made patients lie in their own excrement. Throwing money at a problem is always Labours answer isn't it.

If this government change the NHS good on them. If they get it wrong then I will be the first to say. You again have your head in the sand believing only, what, Old Labour can save this country. You hate the Torys, you dislike New Labour, you don't mention Lib Dems and I guess I can count out the BNP and UKIP. That only leaves communism. They do really well on health issues in those countries don't they.

Ivanhoe Tue 12-Feb-13 19:57:09

Movedalot, the mentlity is and was right. The Tories never believed in the concept of the NHS. The Tories believe in privatisation only.

The only way to improve the NHS is to increase funding, which means UK workers paying more income tax, but UK workers wont like that, so we suffer the consequences of an underfunded NHS.

Ivanhoe Tue 12-Feb-13 19:52:06

Stansgran , We didnt have a Labour Government from 1997. We had a New Labour Government that continued Thatcher's deregulated free market dogma.

Ariadne Tue 12-Feb-13 19:00:30

* Riverwalk* you are SO right, and for once I am willing to stand corrected! What is the word for which I'm searching? Theseus had a suggestion but it isn't printable!

Movedalot Tue 12-Feb-13 18:01:50

I agree Stansgran that often pops up on GN and other places. There has been plenty of time to right any 'wrongs' she may have been responsible for. Recently I had a conversation with someone who used to work in HR in the NHS and she blamed the currrent situation on Mrs T adding a layer of management. When I asked her what should be done about it she said it was too late to do anything! What a mentality. sad

Stansgran Tue 12-Feb-13 17:46:41

It's the constant hankering back to Thatcher which amuses me. I thought we had a Labour government for years. Did they have no effect at all? Or we're they glad to have things done for them that Labour were too afraid to do? Not a political animal just curious.

Riverwalk Tue 12-Feb-13 17:39:01

Sorry Ariadne he is not a polemicist - that word describes someone skilled in the art of debating polemics! Not just throwing out wild accusations and claims grin

Ariadne Tue 12-Feb-13 17:34:45

Yes, there is! But maybe not quite so relentless?

Movedalot Tue 12-Feb-13 17:27:06

Lots of that on GN Ariadne

Ariadne Tue 12-Feb-13 17:19:07

I note the return of the polemicist.

Movedalot Tue 12-Feb-13 15:40:59

Ivan "Their wants over everybody else's needs." This is a very bold statement, please explain how the middle classes wants override everyone else's. I disagree.

Ana Tue 12-Feb-13 15:13:50

In the ether? confused

janthea Tue 12-Feb-13 14:40:29

ivanhoe ???? Really!?!

Ivanhoe Tue 12-Feb-13 14:31:57

Ana, its in the ether that the middle classes are pampered in our meritocracy

Their wants over everybody else's needs.

This is where Labour went wrong in ditching its core working class values for working class people, and adopting middle class values of greed and self interest just to get into power in 1997.

Ana Tue 12-Feb-13 14:00:22

Everything's blue and red to Ivanhoe. I expect it's only the Government and Conservative voters who he considers to be 'pampered'.

Riverwalk Tue 12-Feb-13 13:57:41

Ivanhoe I know you don't debate but perhaps you'd do me the courtesy of replying.

I'm confused - in your email that was broadcast across the airwaves you say:

" In my view we British are now a pampered nation ......."

But then you go on to say that we are low-waged, insecure, no council house building, etc.

Doesn't sound very pampered to me - or is there another meaning to the word pampered that I'm not aware of? confused

And, as for the British "expecting the French to bow and scrape" - have you ever lived in France, or is this one of your sweeping generalisations or dubious claims?

Movedalot Tue 12-Feb-13 13:53:32

Ivan VAT in NL is 21% so not much different ot here.

Movedalot Tue 12-Feb-13 13:53:05

RIver that was quoted a few years ago but I suspect it has something to do with the proportion of the local population. That would certainly make sense.

Not relevant to this thread but you should have seen them when Korea was doing very well in World Cup Football. They had such fun and really enjoyed themselves all together wihtout any trouble. We watched from our office window.

janthea Tue 12-Feb-13 13:52:40

Riverwalk That's what they always say about New Malden.

Riverwalk Tue 12-Feb-13 13:43:32

Moved on the Korean thing .... are you sure about the highest population outside Korea?

There are millions of Koreans in the US, especially in LA - I've been to Korea Town there, can't imagine New Malden is the same! smile

janthea Tue 12-Feb-13 13:33:26

I voted Tory as was obvious from my statement that I did not vote for a coalition!
