A legal farce that is not funny

I recently read a book about the serial killer known as the Monster of Florence. Apparently the police officer in charge of that case was also in charge of the Meredith Kercher case. After reading about the way he conducted the Monster investigations I was much less happy about Amanda Knox's conviction. He seemed to be much too likely to make the facts fit the theories rather than the other way round.

I'm waiting to hear more details about the grounds on which this acquittal has been overturned. Meredith Karcher's family have been reported as welcoming the decision for a re-trial.

I doubt that AK would return to Italy for a re-trial anyway. I suppose her ex-boyfriend is still in Italy so he won't be able to avoid it.

All three families. Amanda Knox's boyfriend also faces a retrial.

Certainly this awful case doesn't make a good case for televising court cases. With all the media criticism to add to it I don't know how they can make a case. A dreadful situation for both families, neither can have any peace . What a shambles!

The whole thing has been such a circus. The press kept making assumptions which people read as fact and I think that generally people perceive women murderers as more newsworthy.
Im sure the 'facts' will never be clear now unless the murderer/s confess.

I'm very sorry for the family of Meredith Kercher, she was a beautiful girl and although I reserve judgement as to whether Amanda Knox is guilty or not, I don't think she behaved very well towards her as a house mate. I think she was quite possibly jealous of her, although of course that doesn't make her guilty of her murder.

But if they are guilty...................? A young woman did lose her life.

j08 Yes, it's different. There was a trial and a conviction. Then four years later there was an appeal which overturned the conviction because the forensic evidence was contaminated. Now there has been another appeal to the Court of Cassation, presumably by the prosecution, and the overturning has been overturned. I don't know on what grounds – that information may emerge later. It's like the bloody hokey cokey not a criminal justice system

Been thinking about this. Is it any different to the Stephen Lawrence case? We were all delighted when two of those thugs got their come-uppance years later.

Women are often treated more punitively in a trial by media aren't they.

The victim, Meredith Kercher, & her family deserve some justice. As so often happens in the situation where the accused become notorious the actual crime and the victim gets lost.

I agree the whole thing appears to have been badly managed from the start and if Knox and boyfriend are not guilty they have suffered inappropriately too.

The press again have a lot to answer for as they were all looking for a 'juicy' story to sell their papers..did not matter to them how much was fact or fiction.

I doubt there will be any closure for anyone. I suspect that Amanda Knox will remain in the USA and not return to Italy for a retrial and, innocent or guilty, that would be a completely understandable response.

My heart goes out to the family of Meridith Kercher , I do so hope that maybe they will get closure finally .

Meanwhile, the other guy (Rudi? Guede?), the one from Africa, is still serving a shorter sentence for the murder. None of it makes sense.

I agree. This is outstandingly appalling! Cruel and unusual punishment or what?!

I have no idea whether she and Sollecito are guilty but the original trial was something of a farce with all sorts of accusations about Knox's character and history bandied about without any evidence being produced. (That is almost certainly why her sentence was longer than his.) In addition, the forensic evidence was contaminated. Now after the convictions were quashed four years later, a retrial has been ordered. I just think it's a complete fiasco and will not serve justice.
