Daily Mail obsession!

Some members seem obsessed with the Daily Mail, if you were my grandson I would say don't look at it then.

Ana Does anyone want me to buy it?

Ana Sat 06-Apr-13 20:02:14

You seemed to be keen to tell us that you wouldn't, that's all. Of course, no one on Gransnet admits to doing so anyway....although they read the controversial bits online, which is apparently all right.

Not especially keen. I was just making a comment about the editor except I became befuddled – too much wine with dinner – and realised I was talking about a different rag all together. I don't but the Daily Express either. This is a thread about the Daily Mail so a comment on that newspaper (provided one is not in drink) seems appropriate. It must be bedtime soon.

Just to be clear from my own point of view. I don't like the DM, I dislike the way it distorts stories and tells untruths. If others want to buy it, that's their prerogative, as long as they don't infllct it on me and mine. I don't asume its readers are right wing, uneducated or gullible - but, I have found that some readers I know believe what they have read and have been upset by it, for example a relative who read that the Liverpool 'Death' Pathway (DM's name or it) is a cruel way to die, when he had just nursed his wife whilst she was placed, with his consent and full consultation, on the Liverpool Care Pathway. Totally ill-informed and bound to cause needless distress. That's one of many examples over the years.

We need responsible journalism. I personally am never interested in Posh Spice or the Duchess of Cambridge, or whether some celeb is size zero after her baby was born last week - each to her own.

Journalism used to be an honourable profession, and there are till some excellent political commentors and investigative journalists who do the industry credit. The DM would do well to clear the decks, get an editor with some integrity, and take some notice of the disgust that they have engendered in so many people that they have offended and lied about.

Another recent example that caused outrage when was the merciless hounding of the teacher who was making a gender transition. Who committed suicide.

BAnanas

Very well put and echoes my sentiments exactly.

"Does anybody remember the remark that it's a good day to bury bad news".

Without entering into why it is such a memorable remark for me I will remind all GN's how it came about.

It was an e.mail sent by 'Labours Spin Doctor' Jo Moore. Whilst the TWIN TOWERS were burning and thousands killed, she sent an e.mail which I beleive said "It is a good day to get out anything we want to 'bury'.

It wasn't a newspaper that showed lack of respect that day was it.

I have been watching this thread progress and I am still of the mind that there will always be posters that simply will never see any good in the Daily Mail and the Sun and will only continue to denigrate them Forget Stephen Lawrence, forget Help For Heroes etc. If you hate something with a passion, even if it is only a newspaper and those who read it, that's how it will be, end of. sad

Greatnan Sat 06-Apr-13 21:21:51

Pogs, I didn't say it was a newspaper that said it.
I agree the DM has some good journalists and has done some good work. That does not mean I have to approve of the way it slants its headlines to suit its own agenda or the hypocrisy with which it salivates over 'wardrobe malfunctions' (ie. a nipple showing) whilst bemoaning the decline of morals.

Greatnan Sat 06-Apr-13 21:23:01

And I am quite sure that nobody on Gransnet has shown any hatred towards readers of the Daily Mail.

POGS Sat 06-Apr-13 21:53:55

Greatnan

Once again IF you read my post you would see quite clearly that I did not say you had linked the quote to a newspaper. There was not one connection to be made in your post to a newspaper as saying it I agree. confused.

Maybe you were looking too hard, for me to be deemed in your mind to be having a go at you again. That was not my intention I assure you. I put your name and time in my post as it did link my reason for reminding GN's where the dispicable quote came from. Had I not done so my post would have appeared totally unconnected with the thread. Again Greatnan, nothing more, nothing less.

As for your second comment we will have to disagree. If posts/threads had never given that impression this repeated attack and defence would not keep occurring by us all. It will not stop because it will keep happening and if you really don't see that then, what, peace and good will will break out. confused.

Greatnan Sat 06-Apr-13 22:45:28

Pogs, I have no quarrel with Daily Mail readers. I just don't like the paper, which is my inalienable right, I think!
If anybody wants to point out its good points, that is fine by me. Now I want to get on with watching Morse.

Lord Robert Winston on Radio 4 at 1 pm today, was saying he felt one of the reasons the current measels outbreak in Swansea etc was so bad, was partly due to the manner in which the DM & DE mishandled/ talked up and played along with the scare created by Dr Andrew Wakefield, (the MMR/Autism scare man), when he started publishing his "findings."

He specifically named both papers.

nanaej Sun 07-Apr-13 18:11:07

Am not sure who owns the DM now..some sort of conglomerate so it is time consuming to track who is the money behind it now but it was originally owned by very right wing aristocrats who hobnobbed with European fascists I believe.

Greatnan Sun 07-Apr-13 18:25:14

I believe Lord Rothermere is still the main shareholder. The Rothermeres were friends of Mussolini and Hitler.

Greatnan Sun 07-Apr-13 18:30:36

Viscount Rothermere pays no tax - he is classed as non-domiciled.

JessM Sun 07-Apr-13 19:01:00

Ben Goldacre has a chapter in one of his books on the invidious role played by the press in fanning the flames of the MMR scare. Really bad in Swansea (my home town) - the last time there were vaccination queues in S Wales was the 1962 smallpox outbreak in which several people died. Including I seem to recall, my grandmother's doctor. They will be lucky if it does not spread beyond the Swansea area as it is very infectious.

annodomini Sun 07-Apr-13 19:01:43

So patriotic!!

Greatnan Sun 07-Apr-13 19:18:11

Perhaps people will now stop asking me why I dislike the DM so much! Of course, there is not much good to say about most newspaper proprietors, Murdoch, Desmond, etc. The Guardian Newspaper Group has some dodgy tax arrangements off shore.

matson Sun 07-Apr-13 19:43:37

i never buy the daily mail, but buy the sunday mail! I,m a fan of liz jones,s humourshock am I banned from GN nowsmile x?

Greatnan Sun 07-Apr-13 19:45:50

Matson, you can read any paper you like, and I can dislike any paper I like.

matson Sun 07-Apr-13 19:49:20

we surely can smile x

Sel Sun 07-Apr-13 23:31:27

Me too matson I think she's a brilliant wind up merchant and very brave in saying what she thinks thus offending the PC brigade. A female Jeremy Clarkson. We might be the only two on here grin

Greatnan Mon 08-Apr-13 00:32:19

No, Sel, I find her very amusing but she does rather forgot what she has said before so it is very easy to spot when she is lying.
