The longing that Derya has felt to become a mother must be very great , to go through all that she has. As someone who has never had to experience the desperate longing for a baby - they just happened along - I am in no position to judge or comment on the wisdom of her decision.

All I can do is wish her and her baby, a successful outcome, although I am mindful that there is still a long way to go for both of them.

We went to a talk several years ago by someone who spoke about his pioneering work with IVF and I'm assuming that it was Sir Robert. All I can remember about it was how he had to fight to achieve what he did against a lot of vitriol [I think he said he was physically threatened as well].

Sir Robert Edwards who jointly pioneered the IVF Treatment died this week. I would like to think he knew of this story before he died to affirm in his mind how wonderfully successful and joyful his work has meant to so many people, not that he needed any affirmation I am sure.

Am I strange to think his passing and the momentous timing of DERYA is rather a nice 'bowing out' of his life on earth. smile

And far more common than I ever realised sad.

What a wonderful story, I do hope it all goes well. It will give hope to a lot of women if it works, having no uterus has always been an insurmountable problem.

How lovely.

Derya Sert was born without a uterus and having received fertility treatment she is now in the very early stages of pregnancy.

She was given the transplant in 2011. What a wonderful bit of hope this story will be for others who I hope will be able to share the same joy one day.

Good luck Derya,
