What does 'not classified as wealthy' mean? I don't think of myself as wealthy - but I don't think of myself as poor either.

Mmmm. Not sure about this but it maybe inbuilt prejudice against the "Daily Express". (I am NOT trying to restart the argument about newspapers!)

i agree with Noodles but I have signed it as I cannot really afford to lose the allowances.

There would be no one on the buses if it weren't for pensioners. It's 50p between 9.00and9.30 and often I'm often the only person on the bus then between Durham and Newcastle . 50p for a chauffeur and stretch limo as far as I'm concerned.

'Entitlement' is such an emotive word! I think it makes us sound very greedy.

I think the argument for free prescriptions is very different from the argument for the winter fuel allowance. Not sure at all about the TV licence and the bus pass has an environmental dimension as well but could see an argument for paying something - either for the pass itself or per journey - probably the latter. Of all the 4, I think the fuel allowance should be means tested in a simple way - eg just go to those getting pensioner credit. Taxing it would probably be difficult because it would involve more people having to fill in tax forms. Could do the same with the TV licence or stop the benefit.

The more tax you pay makes you more entitled to things like heating allowance, free prescriptions and free TV licence.

not sure - I am not a pensioner yet, but my widowed mum had a better income than my DD and her partner combined... with a baby they would have liked a fuel allowance and free travel !

There should be a cut off point, where if you have an income of say £30k, you dont get the freebies
