Life term for wife who severed husband's penis

Goodness me. Would she have got life for a hand or an eye I wonder?
I think TBH I have ambivalent feelings about these cases. A voice in my head says that some men deserve no less (I don't know whether this one did or not). The penis is used as a weapon against women in individual crimes, and in war.
But of course this is not the civilised response hmm Two wrongs do not make a right.
Meanwhile back in the UK it is thought that there are large numbers of genital mutilations of girls going on, and not a prosecution in sight.
And if, by some miracle, a doctor got done for fgm, would they get life?

Was the judge a man?

I am not normally an advocate of violence, but I would like to take a knife to this cleric!

WTF has one type of crime got to do with another when it comes to sentencing?!

You are getting down to playground politics here.

j08 Sat 29-Jun-13 09:27:53

The woman sounds like a dangerous psychopath. No normal person does that.

JessM Sat 29-Jun-13 09:48:03

interesting contributions as always jo8. hmm

Marelli Sat 29-Jun-13 10:18:01

Goodness knows what the woman had gone through in her life before she did this. Maybe she took away from him the thing that had caused her fear throughout her life - perhaps from earlier abuse as well as what she suffered from him.

j08 Sat 29-Jun-13 10:25:39

Sorry if you can't grasp what I'm getting at Jess

j08 Sat 29-Jun-13 10:28:19

Marelli. So you think this woman should be given love and understanding? I think she got the sentence society needs her to have. She will be considered, carefully, for parole in the future.

Greatnan Sat 29-Jun-13 11:17:35

I don't think we know enough about the circumstances that drove her to do this, so I can't pass any judgement on her or her sentence.
No need to be so combative, jingle, we are all entitled to express our opinion.

Nonu Sat 29-Jun-13 11:40:52

Rather a harsh thing to do though .

"Rather a harsh thing to do"

Why do you use that hash symbol thingy, jingle?

I wouldn't take a knife or razor-blade to any - male or female. FGM is often practiced by mother and grandmothers - the perpetuation of a dreadful cultural act that is seen to make a young girl marriageable, and therefore acceptable in some societies.
Cutting off a penis isn't cultural, and not acceptable in any societies or for any reasons, but often amounts to the same thing. A causal effect of the immense distress done to girls and women by men who use their sexuality to harm, for whatever reason.
Education is needed. For men to realise they cannot control women for the purposes of their own sexuality, and for mothers and grandmothers to realise that continuing FGM contributes to this awful cyclical dilemma.

Custodial sentencing for both acts should be considered until such practices stop.

Shortening swearing to WTF doesn't mean you haven't used a nasty phrase JO8 - I would have thought that by this time of life you'd find a better way to express yourself. No matter the subject matter - hopefully GNHQ might make some sort of comment.

j08 Sat 29-Jun-13 13:13:46

dorset?! confused (do you really think the people at HQ never swear themselves? in this day and age? grin)

I await their comments with interest. grin

Greatnan it's a Twitter thing (originally). It's quite commonly used on the internet. smile

j08 Sat 29-Jun-13 13:15:28

From what I've read, it seems they are very close to bringing about the first prosecutions for that horrible FGM.

Butty Sat 29-Jun-13 13:34:23

That's good to hear J, and about time.

Greatnan Sat 29-Jun-13 14:01:49

Yes, jingle, I guessed it emanated from twitter, but what is it for? What does it add to your posts? We know why you use the crossing out device, but I can't see what you gain by this.

Marelli Sat 29-Jun-13 15:13:17

J08, I didn't say anything about the perpetrator of the crime being entitled to 'love and understanding'. No-one knows what this woman has already been through, do they, apart from the fact that she was abused earlier in her life, according to the report. Possibly not much support was given to her throughout her younger life - who knows?
Rightly or wrongly, how much baying for blood has there been when a sexual predator has carried out an awful crime? If the parents of a sexually abused child had been able to lay their hands on a knife when they first discovered what had happened, would they perhaps have wanted to carry out the same 'operation' on the predator?
Not right. It's wrong. But in the heat of the moment, when she's had enough? Who knows?

j08 Sat 29-Jun-13 15:17:16

You don't need to worry your little head about it Greatnan. grin

j08 Sat 29-Jun-13 15:21:10

Marelli I can understand someone hitting and perhaps going as far as to stab, but not that. That was contrived in cold blood. You Ca n't go round cutting bits off of people, no matter what they have done to you.

dorsetpennt Sat 29-Jun-13 16:31:37

JO8 I have never seen GNHQ use a swear word on this site - what they do in the privacy of their own office/home is one thing publically another. Just because you feel it's 'this day and age' doesn't make it right. I'd just prefer not to see/hear it please. I always think resorting to swearing shows a lack of being able to express yourself properly.

j08 Sat 29-Jun-13 16:52:02

My God Dorset! Can't you find something interesting to say? hmm

Greatnan Sat 29-Jun-13 17:01:25

You are trying to patronise me, jingle! Oh, well, nothing like having a new experience!

Butty Sat 29-Jun-13 18:37:50

From penis dismemberment, to WTF to hashtags - you couldn't make it up.
So I'll just add a couple of tennis tennis
