Why bother with expensive research when 'grannies know things'? Perhaps all you qualified medical or social work professionals should just give up - after all, if it's 'in the genes' you might as well throw away the key.
Nonu - nobody is denying the importance of genes in determining all kind of things - but only those genes that actually exist.

Nightowl, I appreciated your ' cat amongst the pigeons' in relation to families with a number of children, where only one child is "difficult".

I've met many kind, loving families, with only one of a number of children who has become dependent on substances, or become involved in crime at various levels. This includes families close to me personally, as well as the many families I spoke to when working, who had one child/sibling living a chaotic/substance misusing/criminal lifestyle and causing such distress to their loved ones.

I agree with when and others, the vast majority of the damaging parents, individuals I have worked with, who hurt others, have themselves been badly hurt in childhood.

I've also known many people who have experienced dreadful abuse in childhood, but are determined never to abuse others. Complicated, isn't it.

A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing . There are some areas where "everyone is an expert" - we have all been to school so there's nothing teachers can't tell us about education: We are all part of society, so social workers? what do they know? We have all had babies (well most of us here) so we know all about childbirth/postnatal depression/breastfeeding and the rest of it. We have all been ill to a certain extent or to the doctor/seen Casualty or even worse "Doctors" so we "know" about matters medical. I amnot one of thoise who totally defers to all professionals in the way my parents' generation never sked questions "because doctor knows best" but please shoot me if I ever imply that I know as much as you do with all the years some of you have spent in training and working with the mentally and physically ill, the homeless or disadvantaged , the bereaved or the demented.

I agree graceesmum I drive a car but I do not know how to fix it!

I do think that some areas of work appear to be 'easy' to onlookers and so they think they can throw in their twopenneth against the expertise/experience of others.

I do not mean that parent/patients/clients/customers etc should not comment about a service from their perspective or even complain about dissatisfaction but it is annoying when the implication is that 'they could do the job better' when actually they do not know all the complexities and often do not want to listen!!

And if they did know the complexities Penstemmon there's no way they would consider doing the job!

But surely we at allowed to state our opinions also?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion,but let's face it some people know more about some things than others.

No, jingle, it is not a thread simply for people who have professional knowledge of the subject, but I don't think much is added to the debate by Nonu's statement that she has no information, but nevertheless 'knows' about an evil gene. Would you really give equal weight to her totally unfounded opinion - to which, of course, she is quite entitled!

As Galen says, we can all state our opinions.

And the rest of us can decide how much credence to give to those opinions.

I did mention the word evil , I do believe it was jess , unless I am much mistaken .

And make your findings known, obviously...
