I know I shouldn't laugh but, honestly! grin

Galen Wed 07-Aug-13 20:12:28

At the bottom. He has a valid question, no matter how badly it was phrased?

JessM Wed 07-Aug-13 20:12:51

Do they absent - always rather thought the latter me'self grin
Maybe people cut him some slack for having slept with the queen and fathered heirs. Can't imagine she was a barrel load of laughs ... but then there is the plausible theory that he was a cad and a bounder and did not deserve her. So racist and cad.
(You can jump in here jo8 and say what a lovely old man he is and what a devoted young one he was, honestly, and how chatting up teenagers was fine too wasn't it in the 1940s if you had your eye on a nice palace to live in after the war...)
I think i had better stop now... moon

These turned up in my Twitter feed:

Banti Singh (@Khyberman)

Okay, I get it now. I'm a recent immigrant, so not sure of the connotations - can anyone tell me WHY Bongo-bongo is deemed offensive?

(so it's not just me) and after someone explained...

Banti Singh (@Khyberman)

@JulesSunbeam When was this? When we thought the earth was flat? This is 2013!!

I was going to ask... Have any people of non-European descent complained?

I don't expect people will understand what I'm getting at. Never mind.

j08 Wed 07-Aug-13 20:30:46

Jess? Whaaat?! confused

Ana Wed 07-Aug-13 20:32:27

I'm sure some of us do, Bags! It's the usual 'taking offence on behalf of other people who couldn't give a damn' syndrome...

j08 Wed 07-Aug-13 20:36:53

Maybe hungry and ill children in third world countries don't have the chance to give a damn?

Bags Wed 07-Aug-13 20:44:14

Phew!

Bags Wed 07-Aug-13 20:56:39

And the conversation continues:

Banti Singh (@Khyberman)

@Singh_Mo @sunny_hundal Yes. I arrived in 2000. The perjorative intent of many terms from the Jurassic period no longer apply.

ManMohan Singh Punia (@Singh_Mo)
07/08/2013 20:27
@Khyberman The intent as used by a man who did his schooling in 60's is exactly as it was then #GodfreyBloom knows it too! @sunny_hundal

Banti Singh (@Khyberman)
07/08/2013 20:32
@Singh_Mo And now, because of the faux outrage, so do millions more. Kids have a new racist term to play with. @sunny_hundal

In my Twitter feed:

Bongoland Embassy ‏@bongolandconsul 7h

@Goddersukip So what time are you coming round?
Retweeted by John Prescott

Bags Wed 07-Aug-13 21:01:00

He also says: "@Khyberman: I refuse to be offended by many words I am referred to as. If you're thinking it, preventing you from saying it won't change a thing." (my bold)

This looks to me the same as what Catherine O'Flynn makes her character say.

j08 Wed 07-Aug-13 21:02:11

Bongoland Embassy ‏@bongolandconsul 5h

@Goddersukip We hear you face persecution from @UKIP for your beliefs. Bongo-Bongoland is happy to offer asylum #bringyourownraybans

Bongoland Embassy ‏@bongolandconsul 7h

@goddersukip We have replenished our Embassy's wine cellar in glorious anticipation of your visit http://politicalscrapbook.net/2012/02/ukip-mep-makes-euro-parliament-speech-on-booze-and-drugs-cocktail/ …

I'm not entirely sure what that all means.

Bags Wed 07-Aug-13 21:14:36

It means they are taking the piss, but I think Khyberman is easier to understand. He's just saying straight out: Stop making such a bloody fuss and giving the idiot so much publicity while you're at it!

Stansgran Wed 07-Aug-13 21:30:47

I don't do twitter or Facebook as I think they are timewasting and on the whole Gransnet is as much of my life of what is left to me as I dare waste.
What I do think is that most of us have prejudice in some way and this man was really complaining about was aid (our hard earned taxes) going to countries where they had corrupt presidents or governments with an attitude to women which is despicable(India)I didn't understand half of the twitter quotes. Sounded like absolute rubbish. Don't think intelligent women should waste their time . Better off knitting or reading Jane Austen. More insight.

j08 Wed 07-Aug-13 22:15:26

But....... but...... we've done the knitting and the Jane Austen stuff, and got bored with it. Long ago. grin

#Gameofthrones

j08 Wed 07-Aug-13 22:16:40

There are some really interesting people to follow on Twitter. (don't take any notice of Bags's oddballs) smile

j08 Wed 07-Aug-13 22:18:02

Life is now definitely too short to knit.

Especially as the kids refuse to wear jumpers.

Galen Wed 07-Aug-13 22:45:15

sweet eglantine if you will insist on knitting them 1930's style jumpers, what do yo expect?

Sel Wed 07-Aug-13 22:51:18

galen and j08* surely not 1930s? grin (although secretly impressed by anyone who can knit anything from any era)

j08 Wed 07-Aug-13 22:51:56

grin

It's all un-buttoned shirts on top of t-shirts these days! Even in the winter. hmm

j08 Wed 07-Aug-13 22:53:37

In the 30's it would have been the dreaded 3 ply! Would have taken ages.

Galen Wed 07-Aug-13 22:56:21

grin

Galen Wed 07-Aug-13 22:56:49

j08 Wed 07-Aug-13 23:02:28

Bags Thu 08-Aug-13 06:31:25

Well done you two grin

Yes, done the knitting (masses of it; still am but more slowly; not jumpers now; DD's knitting me one) and the Jane Austen (7 times). Facebook and
twitter are what one makes of them, not just what other people make of them. What you hear in the news is not what my FB and my Twitter are like, so pleasedon't make unwarranted assumptions.

Nor about knitting and Jane Austen and gransnet, come to that.
