What kind of world do we live in? angry

I read this and it made me want to weep for that poor little girl. How can this be right? when I first read about little girls being married off to older men in different cultures, I kind of assumed it was similar to when young royalty/nobility were married as children way back in time, sometimes by proxy and the marriage was consummated at a later stage. Not that I think it's acceptable for a teenager to have to unwillingly have sex with a much older man. It really shocks me to think that any society could sanction what in effect is the rape of a child, truly appalling. Although this didn't happen in our country I don't think we should creep around other cultures sensitivities when they carry out practices which are clearly so wrong.

Totally nauseated by these two incidents - presumably the tip of an iceberg. Even medieval "child" marriages waited until the bride was 14 before being consummated (apart form Margaret Beaufort) I'm afraid we can and have to judge - this is morally wrong whatever the circumstances, whatever the culture.

Yes, Bags no child should be violated like this. It's barbaric and not acceptable in any culture, no matter how desperate the parents are.

An eight year old won't even have reached puberty. It's completely evil and barbaric to allow this to happen in any human culture.

We bloody can judge! Raping children is wrong. Full stop. Damn the culture that allows it! angry

That is so awful. How could any parent do that - unless they were in a terrible position themselves. I suppose unless we know the full facts we can't altogether judge. But that poor child. And there must be others.

An 8 year old girl in the Yemen, married to a man believed to be around 40, has died from internal bleeding sustained on her wedding night. In 2010 a 12 year old Yemeni girl died after being in labour for 3 days.

When is the practice of marrying off children to much older men be internationally outlawed? The Yemen did introduce a law banning marriage under the age of 15 but their parliament annulled the law in the 1990s. Claiming it is part of the culture doesn't make it right.

I can't begin to imagine the suffering of this poor child.
