The Daily Mail's political extremism, masquerading as news, shames all fair-minded journalists and adds weight to the politicians' attempts to regulate the Press.
The only way to alter the DM's vicious and unwarrented personal attacks is to do what the people of Liverpool did to The Sun (after Hillsborough) and boycott it - in print and online (which is a shame, as I like their Sudoku: perhaps Gransnet can start online puzzles?)

Well we don't know that the MoS thinks they were beyond the pale. Just that the public were so obviously going to think they were beyond the pale that an apology might seem like a good idea.

I was pleased to hear Clegg saying something I could agree with for once.

Clegg made an excellent point today i.e. it is a bit rich accusing RM of being anti-Britain when the DM is a daily avalanche of criticism of ... the UK.

I see the MoS has now apologised. This bit of the Guardian report of what happened was particularly shocking, I thought.
"The reporter at one point held the hand of one of the grieving relatives and then twice asked her to comment on Ralph Miliband, the source said. She refused to do so."

I think a lot of this is about Leveson. I never quite understood all the stuff about protecting the freedom of the press at all costs; is this the sort of thing people had in mind?
It feels more as if sections of the press feel that they have rights without responsibilities.

Now Ed Miliband has written to Lord Rothermere complaining that a journalist from the Mail on Sunday gatecrashed a private memorial service for his uncle, a distinguished doctor. The journalist was trying to get a reaction to the Ralph Miliband story, from the family. The letter is in the online Guardian.

Eloethan I thought the DM did enshrine all that is wonderful about British values: Fair minded, family oriented, caring, polite, reasonable, calm, extending a friendy welcome to the weak and suffering etc etc.

I think bluebell may have touched on this but it is interesting that the DM's report and Ed Milliband's response almost wiped the Conservative Party Conference off the headlines. Interesting!

I don't think Ed Miliband stabbed his brother in the back. They had different views about the direction the Labour Party should take and they each had the opportunity to present their views.

I'm glad that Ed Miliband has defended his dad against the disgusting comments made by the Mail. There are many people - myself included - who dislike the personal and political privileges entrenched in such British institutions as the royal family and the church. Is it for the Daily Mail to decide what "British values" are or should be?

Well - it's good to see so many people accepting that Ed had equal rights to David to stand for the leadership. I am relieved David didn't get it, he was too contaminated with the Blair/Brown/Iraq war issues for me. He also supported military action in Syria recently, so he doesn't seem to have learned anything from recent disasters. Being siblings, or partners/husbands and wives, doesn't mean you see everything in exactly the same way.

I understand your views riverwalk , but if one thinks a party should veer to the right but the other to the left then both should stand and allow members to decide and this is what happened.

They both stood. Ed as much right to stand as David, even though David a little more high profile. I am not getting the outrage.

Annie I just can't imagine a scenario where a married couple, both MPs, would have such political differences that they would feel that they both had something so different to offer their party that they would have to stand against each other. Not talking about standing for election to the golf club committee or neighbourhood watch here, but a major political party.

Can you imagine Hillary Clinton standing against against Bill - it just wouldn't happen!

Of course David Miliband had no right to inherit the party leadership, but I found it quite extraordinary that his brother, older or younger it makes no difference, to whom he was close, stood against him.
