The Daily Mail going on about his dad like that. sad

I really hate the Daily Mail. The country would be so much better off without it.

But then Gransnet wouldn't be able to moan about it. hmm

Every time one thinks the DM can't get any worse it confounds expectations. Not many papers do that

Jendurham Tue 01-Oct-13 22:35:05

I think even my parents would stop buying the DM for a few weeks at that.
It's on Newsnight at the moment.

Grannylin Tue 01-Oct-13 22:57:32

Twisted journalism and very below the belt, especially from a newspaper that admired Hitler at one time.

annodomini Tue 01-Oct-13 23:13:11

Even for the DM, this is beyond disgraceful journalism.

Paul Dacre has stooped so low this time, I can't understand why he is still in a job. If anything, from learning a little more about Ed's dad, I feel more confident about Ed's claim that he is bringing the party back to socialism. It's the first thing that has sounded genuine for some time!

I signed Ed's petition about the DM, but I do think that if he doesn't want things personalising he should have thought twice about mentioning the McCanns in his recent speech. He's lucky they haven't started a public row with HIM!

Not convinced that Ed is up to it, but this was just plain nasty. Since when has everyone been judged on what their parents did anyway? Some of my beliefs are a very long way from my parents.

You should have seen the Murdoch press in Australia before our Sept 7th election. That loathsome Murdoch owns our only two major dailies here in Queensland: The Australian, and The Courier Mail, and his pro-Tory bias was shameless. The first day of the election his headlines in a Southern newspaper, about the then incumbent Labour Party were, in a giant banner font: KICK THIS MOB OUT!. It got worse from then on. 'Get up' tried to have an advert on the major TV channels telling him to back off:
https://www.getup.org.au/campaigns/media/murdochs-election-campaign/ but they were too afraid of Murdoch to show it.

And the bastard won: we now have a far right government that is shaming us.

As for the DM - good for a laugh!

Joan Wed 02-Oct-13 03:10:22

PS When I say 'good for a laugh' I'm talking about gallows humour.

I understand that the DM attack was based on what Ralph Milliband wrote in his diary when he was 17 and just arrived in England after a traumatic escape from Nazi persecution. Only 17, traumatised by his recent experiences and in an alien country with a different culture, what young person would not write in their diary feelings that dissipated as time progressed?

I spent my childhood travelling the world with my parents and yet, when in my early 40s I went to California for a holiday I was amazed to find myself suffering from culture shock for the first two days. I hated the country, the people, the culture. After two days, recovery from jetlag and with a couple of night sleep I loved my holiday, the country and the people. Fortunately I do not keep a diary or have a son in the public eye.

Any doubters about why many GN's are so scathing about the DM should take note of this article as a prime example of our reasons.

FlicketyB Has put the context of Ralph Millibands position at the age of 17 very well.

The diary extract has nothing to do with "hating Britain" either. It is expresses disapproval of the attitudes of some people of the time. I think it is probably called "free speech", but as it does not accord with the "values" of the Mail, then it is described as hating Britain.
I loved the bit in the Newsnight interview when the deputy editor of the Mail said that the views of the Viscount Rothermere of the time in supporting Hitler were "not relevant". And the "Bravo for the Blackshirts", headline was OK too?

Could someone provide the link please?

And of course the majority of academics in politics, history, social sciences and many other disciplines were marxists in much of the 20th c

janeainsworth Wed 02-Oct-13 08:04:14

The DM is clearly beyond the pale.
I don't think politicians should be judged on their parents' values and backgrounds - that applies to the Tories and LibDems as much as Ed Miliband.
They should be judged in their own words and more importantly, actions.
I think Ed Miliband will be judged in the future not on his father's background, but his own destruction of his brother's political future.

bluebell Wed 02-Oct-13 08:21:55

And of course , George V1's brother and the queens uncle was a supporter of Hitler - wonder what the Mail thinks of that and what it says about the royal family? Portillos dad fought on the republican side in the Spanish civil war... the Mails behaviour is an attack on democracy no less

bluebell Wed 02-Oct-13 08:24:48

And Jane- don't you think David should say something? It's his dad too

Greatnan Wed 02-Oct-13 08:28:58

What a slimy excuse for a journalist. Do any of our members still feel ready to defend this hate-filled rag? I am afraid some decent articles on health are not enough to justify its existence. I do read it on-line, ( along with all the other papers that are available), because I want to be aware of what lies they are peddling, which way they are distorting statistics, which minority groups they are targeting.

janeainsworth Wed 02-Oct-13 08:36:30

Bluebell - perhaps David thinks discretion is the better part of valour!
A dignified silence is the best response to the toe-rags at the DM - let others draw attention to the complete lack of human decency.
Greatnan - I don't think many of the DM's articles on health would stand up to scientific scrutiny!

Mamie Wed 02-Oct-13 08:38:22

I think the issue with the DM is fairly and squarely about editorial policy rather than journalism. It also has a lot to do with Ed Miliband's stance on Leveson.
Still, it is very gratifying to see that Ed has got them so rattled.

bluebell Wed 02-Oct-13 08:41:32

Jane - yes you are probably right - if David weighed in it would just be an excuse to run the whole leadership thing again. I thought DC handled it well on the radio - my guess is that there are probably lots of dodgy dads in the political classes

Greatnan Wed 02-Oct-13 08:45:20

Blair's father is/was a staunch conservative. Of course, so is Blair.
So the Rothermere's friendship with the Nazis was 'not relevant'. confused

whenim64 Wed 02-Oct-13 08:51:30

Newsnight was very entertaining last night. The deputy editor of the DM was squirming in his seat as his arguments were demolished by Alistair Campbell. It'll be interesting to see what today brings. Ed and co are on a roll now.......
