What is it with the Windsors?

First of all they put the poor child – born, please note, in the twenty-first century – in a ^replica (not even the original) of the christening robe first made for Princess Vicky (born 1840). Then he is christened with water from the River Jordan. What kind of superstition is that about? And how clean is any river water? And he has no fewer than seven godparents. Are they all going to see to his spiritual welfare? Yeah – oink flap.

Then the media like to tell us that the Cambridges wish to lead as normal a life as possible.

You may be in a club of one there nightowl - have you ever considered therapy grin
gillybob that is so unfair on Beatrice and Eugenie, they are both perfectly attractive young women even if wrongly advised re wedding outfits.
Tegan you would like the horse-mad branch wouldn't you. But Anne and Zara both been relatively normal in a sort of upper class sport mad way haven't they?

penguinpaperback Sat 26-Oct-13 12:27:04

Agus, I wouldn't find it demeaning to curtsey to the Queen or any of the Royal family. thlsmile I would wear my best hat.

Tegan Sat 26-Oct-13 12:31:34

The horse world is a great leveller and the love of horses bonds people together in a way other sports don't seem to. Although why Zara switched from Richard Johnson to Mike Tindall is beyond me confused.

nightowl Sat 26-Oct-13 13:43:28

It's ok Jess I don't mind being strange smile. Someone has to like him. I never think his mum or dad like him much hmm

I like Zara as well Tegan. Did she choose to swap Richard Johnson for Mike Tindall or was she dumped? I think she will make a lovely mum, and her children will have lots of fun.

I don't understand the doubts about Harry's paternity anymore either, as I've recently seen photos of him in the press looking the image of Charles.

I think Charles looks happier now than he's ever done.

Pippa's present - Not exactly a Beatrix Potter mug

Ana Sat 26-Oct-13 15:21:47

shock

Nonu Sat 26-Oct-13 15:23:42

INMO , they were a bit creepy , afraid not to my taste at all . hmm

Lilygran Sat 26-Oct-13 16:17:07

All the headlines about prison - what Charles' aide apparently said was, 'shades of the prison house'. Very well known quote from Wordsworth referring to the start of duty and responsibility after a carefree youth. For heaven's sake!

Tegan Sat 26-Oct-13 16:19:20

Creepy I'm afraid. Makes me think of things the Victorians did when infant mortality was high. nightowl; you're probably right about Richard; anyway he wouldn't have had time to do things like attend christenings when he's riding in the 3.30 at Southwell.

merlotgran Sat 26-Oct-13 16:23:29

I think Zara was in an abusive relationship with Richard Johnson. He was quoted as saying he didn't like the prospect of being 'kept on a leash' and they had violent rows.

She's better off with Mike Tindall even if he did let her down badly when they were first married.

nightowl Sat 26-Oct-13 16:29:12

shock I had no idea about any of that merlot, my question about whether Zara was dumped was asked in complete ignorance. I hope Mike Tindall treats her well, she seems a genuinely nice person.

Perhaps it's better to marry a sportsman from a different sport. Someone who understands the discipline needed but who has different interests and pressures.

Tegan Sat 26-Oct-13 16:35:18

Crikey; either way I hope she's as happy as she appears to be these days. A lot of successful jockeys are very driven and must be very hard to live with, especially when they're constantly having to diet.

Agus Sat 26-Oct-13 17:15:50

Even dismissing the fact that I am not a Royalist penguinpaperback' I just find the whole notion bizarre that one human being would bow/curtesy to another simply because of the family they were born into/married into. But, each to his ownsmile

£7,000 for a christening present! Words fail me.

Nonu Sat 26-Oct-13 17:51:20

She will have to do a lot more articles in waitrose magazine , to pay for them !!!!!!!

CSL

Ana Sat 26-Oct-13 17:57:07

Nonu! grin

Nonu Sat 26-Oct-13 18:06:41

ANA grin

ginny Sat 26-Oct-13 18:16:38

£7000 on a christening gift! It would have been ridiculous even if it had been an attractive gift. Why couldn't she have given a small gift and donated to charity in George name if she has that much money.

ginny Sat 26-Oct-13 18:29:58

Just seen the video clip. What a lot of silly bobbing and bowing ! Kate looked like she might need to use the 'ladies'.

Deedaa Sat 26-Oct-13 20:41:28

I know my mother always felt very sorry for Charles and thought he had a horrible childhood, all that having to line up and shake hands with his mother when he hadn.t seen her for weeks, and being incarcerated in Gordonstoun just because his father liked it. In spite of his own disfunctional childhood he seems to have done a pretty good job with William and Harry.
How close is a republic when the answer to falling circulation is to plaster the royals over the front page?

MargaretX Sat 26-Oct-13 21:04:52

I wish Kate would dress down a bit but she must want to please the queen. its not easy when first married not to want to get right with your in laws, it took me years to stand up to my mother in law and just not to care!

I can understand Charles feeling it would be a prison to be king. His relatives on his father's side live near me and are organic farmers like he is. He was over and had a good time here. His top estate manager is here with his wife at the moment and they said Charles was impressed with what is being done in this part of Germany. He is a farmer and a business man. He was stomping about in wellies and talking to everybody.

annodomini Sat 26-Oct-13 21:07:42

Oh joy! The MoS is advertising a special glossy supplement on the royal christening. Yuk!

Elegran Sat 26-Oct-13 21:09:47

" Heaven lies about us in our infancy!
Shades of the prison-house begin to close
Upon the growing Boy,
But He beholds the light, and whence it flows,
He sees it in his joy;
The Youth, who daily farther from the east
Must travel, still is Nature's Priest,
And by the vision splendid
Is on his way attended;
At length the Man perceives it die away,
And fade into the light of common day."

Wordsworth - Ode on the intimations of immortality from the recollections of earliest childhood.

annodomini Sat 26-Oct-13 21:11:53

When George grows up, what is he going to do with silver casts of his hands and feet? Melt them down?

Agus Sat 26-Oct-13 21:26:00

He probably will melt them down as they were the cause of so many nightmares throughout his childhood as he imagined them crawling under the covers towards him
