Thought this was interesting www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-24727189

I have always put meat into one of the bags at the till before I've then placed in my own bags for life and I hadn't even really considered why I did that it just seemed the sensible thing to do so that anything from the meat didn't leak onto other foodstuffs.. don't most people do that?

When we were young the butcher called mid morning every day and mother cooked it so there was no problem of storage. Milk bottle was stored outside in a terracotta pot which kept it cool. My uncle had a market garden so vegetables arrived in bulk in a hessian sack and onions, from the French onion seller, delivered via bicycle.

Now that I'm in the habit of making sure my bags for life are always kept in the car so I can't forget them, I no longer have a 'sausage' of carrier bags hanging in the broom cupboard. Oh, they were so useful.
