With the declassification of government papers on this, it has emerged that strong warnings were given that this demonstration would be met with violence from inside the embassy. This information was taken seriously by the security people and was passed on to government.

Why then did they allow this demonstration to go ahead? Could they have stopped it? Was it because Margaret Thatcher wanted Libya to be demonstrated against, and was prepared to knowingly risk the lives of police men and women to further her own cause?

This seems to have been almost a deliberate sacrifice of that young woman's life.

A foreign embassy should have no say over who has the right to demonstrate in London.

Who knows what Thatcher's motives were but I can't for one moment imagine that there was any deliberate sacrifice.

This is a free country people are free to express their opinions and demonstrate - if we start preventing that we are on a very slippery slope. The loss of this young woman's life was a tragedy but the blame for it must be on the person who pulled the trigger.

Agreed - embassies cannot throw their weight around and say who can and cannot demonstrate in public places. Their domain stops at their doorstep.
The person who shot YF and a lot of demonstrators that day was one of Gadafi's henchmen.

As an ex police officer, can I say that when you join the police, you sign up in the full knowledge that it can be dangerous.
The job entails protecting life and property.

I wonder if the on duty police-people were given this information. I think probably not.

Wouldn't have made any difference if they were.
