With the declassification of government papers on this, it has emerged that strong warnings were given that this demonstration would be met with violence from inside the embassy. This information was taken seriously by the security people and was passed on to government.
Why then did they allow this demonstration to go ahead? Could they have stopped it? Was it because Margaret Thatcher wanted Libya to be demonstrated against, and was prepared to knowingly risk the lives of police men and women to further her own cause?
This seems to have been almost a deliberate sacrifice of that young woman's life.
