Doesn't she look great? People in the public eye are so carefully scrutinised as they age. Glad I only had my close family nearby for my 50th and not the international press identifying every wrinkle. Wish I'd done a bit more of a splurge though (if only for Kate Moss's bank account - do you think we could club together and do a Necker Island party!). 60th coming up so I suppose I could start planning for that. Does anybody have any particularly memorable birthday celebrations? wine Do you regret not making the most of your last 'big' birthday? My friend has wryly said that at this age it's best to celebrate the mid-decades too - just in case!

She is the first LADY apart from mamie who didn"t "rise to the Occasion.

The period of time I am talking about is 30/40 years ago !

I am sure I will be set straight thought .

She was a woman, Nonu not a trophy bimbo to be exhibited on "occasions" like a Stepford wife.

Why should she dye her hair? There is nothing to be ashamed of in grey hair. and the earliest first ladies certainly did not do so. They would have been either "shameless hussies" or ridiculed for trying to be "mutton dressed as lamb".

It is only fairly recently that the cult of everlasting youth has persuaded women in public life that they must never look their age, or anywhere near it, but must give the impression that their eminent (and grey or bald) husbands are married to eternal teenagers.
