May have missed this if someone has commented then I apologise. What do others think of the Facebook/Twitter 'no make up selfie' thing that has gone viral.

Lona Wed 26-Mar-14 13:28:10

CRUK have posted on FB today that we have raised £8 million with the 'barefaced selfie'.

Flowerofthewest Wed 26-Mar-14 11:36:24

I stuck by my principle and posted two infograms to help raise awareness, one on Kidney Cancer and one on Prostate. Hope that was enough.

Elegran Wed 26-Mar-14 11:31:23

It is blackmail.

This cancer awareness thing is getting to be a pain to be honest. I'm all for fundraising but last night a good friend of mine posted on facebook that she had 'just used her boobs to get out of a speeding ticket'. Naturally, there was a good response to her comment. Some of it very funny.

However....I then received a message from her which said,

You should not have liked or commented! Now you have to pick one of the 14 below and post to your status. This is the 2014 breast cancer awareness game. Don't be a spoil sport choose your poison, and change your status.

1) Damn diarrhea
2) Just used my boobs to get out of a speeding ticket
3) Anyone have a tampon, I'm out
4) How do you get rid of foot fungus
5) Why is nobody around when I'm horny?
6) No toilet paper goodbye socks!
7)Someone offered me a job as a prostitute but I'm hesitant.
8)I think I'm in love with someone what should I do?
9)I've decided 2 stop wearing underwear. 10)I still love my ex. 11)I really don't know how 2 tell anyone and I'm sick of hiding it I'm gay.
12)Guess it was 2 good 2 b true I'm pregnant.
13)Just won $7000 on a scratchy.
14)I've just found out I've been cheated on for the past 5 months.
Post with no explanations.

Sorry, I fell for it too ! Sorry and ha ha! Looking forward to your post! Xx

Tough if she thinks I'm a spoilsport but if I participate in this load of American rubbish my friends and family will comment and then I will have to copy and paste the above to them and I doubt they'll be amused.

DON'T respond if you get one of these on facebook.

Unless you think it's fun hmm

I don't mind who wears make-up and claims not to. I don't mind that some younger girls and women feel 'brave' by posting a make-up free photo of themselves. I don't mind that some of the donations temporarily went astray to other charities. I don't mind that some journalists are critical of the nature and implications of this campaign.

The only thing on my mind is this massive boost to cancer research that may some day provide life-saving treatment and support for my children and grandchildren.

These days I rarely do more than slap on a bit of tinted moisturiser, but I do think to myself 'that looks better'.

Stansgran Wed 26-Mar-14 10:54:18

Does no one else have days when, as they put on make up, think that this is a really odd thing to do?
Some days I think how very peculiar.

Ana Tue 25-Mar-14 19:53:54

Quite, JaneA. Glad I wasn't the only one. If she made a donation, fine - but don't try to kid everyone that you look like that without makeup!

Ariadne Tue 25-Mar-14 19:38:18

As a survivor (fingers firmly crossed) I was more than happy to post a selfie on FB. I agree with some of the feelings expressed here; I do donate to CRUK, and work as a volunteer for them; I think I wouldn't be here if research had not made so much progress. So, a selfie isn't a big deal.

some of the money went to UNICEF. And polar bears

ana I had the following correspondence with Max Pemberton yesterday:

Thanks for the email - I didn't choose the picture though! Blame the picture desk!
All the best
Max

If she made a large donation I don't really care! Perhaps it will give girls the confidence to go out without their mask.

Ana Tue 25-Mar-14 18:36:22

Just seen one of Katherine Jenkins - shiny face but obvious lipgloss and eye makeup! What's the point?

Aka Tue 25-Mar-14 18:26:31

£8,000,000 now raised smile

No problem Culag a welcome diversion IMO!

Culag Sat 22-Mar-14 19:19:06

Whoops wrong thread! blush

Culag Sat 22-Mar-14 19:17:44

I've always thought that spectacle frames are always over priced. After all they are only metal and plastic, and to add a designer name as well!!

Soutra Sat 22-Mar-14 18:35:49

Thank you for the links thatbags. The journalists, especially Sali in The Grauniad, put it in a nutshell and express my feelings much more eloquently than I could do.

Aka Sat 22-Mar-14 17:37:08

¿ Jane ?

granjura Sat 22-Mar-14 17:13:53

Oh absolutely ...same here.

MiceElf Sat 22-Mar-14 17:05:30

I don't need anyone else's opinion, but I do value them. I find reading and listening to other opinions fascinating a a great help in refining my own views. I've certainly modified a good many of my opinions over the years by reading, listening and taking note of the way other minds interpret 'facts' and present points of view which had not occurred to me.

granjura Sat 22-Mar-14 16:45:17

What a shame- so much money raised, and some are arguing about it. If you don't like it- fine- don't take part. Simple.

I think ti's been particularly sucessful with the younger generation/s- who do tend to wear more make-up than most of us do. The selfie posted by a young ex student of mine, terminal phase, 2 young kids- and not a hair in sight- was beautiful and dignified. I shall sponsor her huge team running in June (including one of our daughters) and many of my ex students and tutor group- a great bunch).

petallus Sat 22-Mar-14 16:43:29

I just did it. And I don't take a good photo at the best of times!
